  1. How does he sound entitled? He asked if it was against the regs and/or how folks who have done it did it. He never said he should be able to do whatever he wants. It's people like you that provide no value to this forum, and probably the Air Force, if all you do is wander around saying no one should ask questions and you're better than everyone else because you've been around longer. No offense to you, just a common thing I see around here and I'm tired of it.

  6. Fellas, I've been working rated assignments with the last three 11M and other functionals for ~five years. Including three trips to AFPC to haggle. Been working with lots of Sq/CCs and OG/CCs for the same timeframe. Never, not once, has VSP status entered any of those conversations, nor affected someone I know's assignment. If you think your VSP status is affecting your strat, school push, assignment options, etc...PM me, I'd like to hear your story.

  9. Have you ever sped on the way to work? You are too. I have little problem with Snowden's actions (Manning is a different story). I would be hesitant to call him a hero, but what he did was very important (albeit probably fruitless in the long run.)

I'll play: Roth IRA: $25k Mutual fund: $65k Home: $130k my equity No debt except mortgage of $220k...gonna downsize in the next yr or two... 2 kids already thru college and with wheels, no debt for either, currently working same plan on the third... $5mil in AF retirement coming my way over the next 40 yrs...I hope...

  16. This is a topic that folks are hesitant to discuss in person, so I thought it would be good for this forum. I've been pretty disciplined during my USAF career about saving and investing, but I'm not sure how I'm doing as compared to my peers. I'm just trying to get a feel if I'm doing OK as compared to other officers, or if I need to rethink what I'm doing and get more creative about saving. My net worth is roughly $703,000 broken down into: Cash: $10,000 I Bonds: $21,000 CDs: $60,000 (PenFed Credit Union now has some nice 5-year CDs at 3.04%) TSP 2040 Fund: $199,000 My Roth IRA: $95,000 (all in USAA's S&P 500 index) Wife's Roth IRA: $38,000 (all in USAA's S&P 500 index) Taxable Index Funds: $282,000 (all in USAA's S&P 500 index) My goal is to reach $1 million by the time I hit the 20-year point. All of this money has come from my USAF compensation, not from inheritance, second jobs, etc. I've never owned a house. My wife has never had a paying job while we've been married and brought no financial assets or debts to the marriage. I attended a private university and started my career around $30,000 in debt. I'm a Cyber Ops Lt Col with 15.5 years of service, so I never got flight pay. However, I've spent much of my career OCONUS, and have received $136,000 in COLA and language pay. So, I'd be interested to know how you're doing so I can figure out if I'm missing anything. Thanks, Pajaro

  18. A few times a week in my work, I fly over the wreckage of a Willie Tweet that packed it into North Butte, east of Florence AZ in Feb of '70. Solo stud was returning low level from the MOA down the Gila River, filming with a camera as he was flying down river and in between two buttes, but impacted the North Butte with no ejection. Camera was embedded in the stud's body. Wreckage left in place. Granted GoPro's are hands off, but I'm always reminded of this particular accident.

  19. I'll caveat this up front that I am in no way important... There are only so many hours in a day/work week. I typically fly twice a week. There is mission planning that takes place before the sortie. We then brief, fly, and debrief. Then, I usually have a grade book write up and/or a Form 8 to complete. Along with my primary duty (see above), I probably have a few projects that I am working on at any given time, as well as keeping tabs on the projects the guys in my shop are working too. Plus, there is always an OPR or award package or two that need working, along with the multiple rounds of edits that of course have to be accomplished. Aside from that, it's the normal whack-a-mole stuff that comes up that serves only as chaff throughout the day. Not to mention I need to find time to work out because I don't have the natural physique of a marathoner. Somewhere in there I need to spend time with family and sleep. Thank goodness I've got AAD and PME banged out. That's not to sport-bitch... Only to say there's shit to do. And if, on occasion, I need to do some work at home during the kiddo's nap time/after bed time as a relief valve to prevent stuff from piling up, well so be it. If things happen to be slow, I take advantage of it and GTFO. I've actually got a pretty awesome CC. That doesn't mean there isn't still shit to do, though.

  25. 1) Her name makes me giggle. 2) Frocking is silly to me...either you can promote a General or you can't; makes me think (again) how messed up General officer billets are. 3) I would love to see the citation to go along with that Bronze Star/Afghanistan Campaign Medal. It's funny to me when I hear the philosophy, "I don't want to rock the boat. I need to see how things work around here before I start changing things." When you only hold a job for a couple years max (such as the career being discussed based on her bio, and most CC jobs for that matter), one really needs to blast in there "like a bull in a china shop" fixing the broken stuff to make a real difference. Take enough time and people will convince you that it has to be this way for good reason (i.e. AFPC works fine, nothing wrong here). Some people prescribe to one philosophy, others are perfectly fine with the later philosophy. I believe far fewer have enough faith in themselves (sometimes with good reason) to effectively use the later. With that many jobs, over such short periods of time...I would be curious how much leadership really gets exerted and what was improved along the way. What I do know is that being a double DG will get you far...regardless of your leadership philosophy or actual job performance. Bendy Edit: My interwebs went beserko!

  26. Dudes, you want Liquid here, disagree as you may, he reads the posts, keep them up. Maybe someday in a meeting he will think of what he reads here. GC seems a bit less credible but he seems to be in some high level meetings, exec or not, he may bend an ear. The congressman is just that, he is still engaging which all of you should count as a win, he is a politician with a military background, did I say he was a politician? I hate being the devils advocate, but I am right.

  27. In addition the autorotations that are flown in the aircraft are nothing like the real thing that was performed by the Minot crew. All of our autos are to a power recovery and, IMHO, the hardest part of an auto is the final flare and touchdown. Once a helo pilot leaves Ft. Rucker, they will never accomplish another touchdown auto unless they go back as a SUPT-H instructor or have a malfunction that requires one.

All of these box checking Sq/Gp/Wg Commanders will tell pilots who actually want to do their job instead of all the meaningless queep (AAD/PME in Cor/Etc) that they are an "Officer First" instead of a pilot, but then you have a kid who either washes out or quits UPT/Flight Screening and they say, "Sorry, we hired you to be a pilot... you're out and here is the bill".

  30. Oh, no doubt. Sucking up to a drug dealer can be helpful too, if you need a few Gs on the side or perhaps an ex knocked off. Doesn't make it right, and it doesn't change the company you keep, or your actions around them. What you call "networking." But I understand for a guy like you, it's a skill in your vocabulary to slob and suck. For a guy like you. As for me, the only way WalMart would enter this equation between you and myself, is if I bought the company, you applied for a job, and I told you "not just no, but hell no." Followed by, "We don't hire ass kissing politician-wannabes without principle at WalMart. I know you're used to doing that in one uniform, but it won't be the WalMart uniform."
