  1. My bad. Our senior military leaders and politicians would never lead us down the wrong path.

  2. That's the problem right there. Decisions like this should have nothing to do with feelings or emotions. Like the article says, the only thing that should be considered is will this have a positive or negative impact on combat capability. I think most combat professionals would argue that this is merely a political move that will in the end hurt combat capability. I just hope no one is injured or killed as a result of this decision. Edited cause I don't rite good

  4. Down here in Texas we have a little saying for those who want to try and take our firepower away... And while a bunch of pussy liberal states try to pass ridiculous regulations concerning an inalienable right under the Constitution, today in Texas lawmakers are proposing legislation to expand gun rights in the state! In the immortal words of Davy Crockett, "Y'all can go to hell, I'm going to Texas!"

  8. That is EXACTLY what is happening, both past and present. Basically every single defining piece of "assault weapon" is from looks. If it LOOKS scary, then it's an assault weapon. They have no idea what the actual functions are. Do you guys remember this interview? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSPrHl_6bO4&sns=em

  11. "In addition, because of the changes in destination, the crew was unable to review the physical layout of MacDill during a preflight briefing, something Air Force rules recommend be done as often as possible." I guess after watching the 2nd Season of 24, there was not enough time during the flight 10 hour flight to at least glance at the Airfield Diagram/FLIP. Wxman

  14. At the "risk" of keeping this thread bumped, I'll chuckle and add- I'm not sure how the tanker thing got so easy or hard or the C-17 so overtaxed that we'd train the Boomer/LM to read an approach plate. NOT saying there isn't the time and the place, but there SHOULD not be the need to go to a training course. 8th deployment and looking for something new to learn? OK. I've spent plenty of time sweating and freezing downstairs working on the GROUND with the LMs and load teams, WHEN it made sense. Doesn't mean I needed or wanted to be trained. In flight you may have 0 pax, 1, 39, 41, 169. Different loads, rules and LMs make too many variables to standardize a LM chart reader. But, like all bad ideas, it keeps coming back each new generation. Then comes the indignant end-around to still try and have it pushed. At least in crew cockpit jets- If 2 pilots can't fly IMC, non-radar, to Mins or a missed with an engine out, anywhere in the world, anytime in a duty period, not hit something, find the right airport and leave the jet in a reuseable condition without a Class-something, you're doing something wrong as a culture, not an MDS/MAJCOM/pissing contest stratification inserted here... I'll show a LM how to read a low level chart, just as an appreciation. I'll let them up during flight- some get it, some could fly it, some don't want to be near it. Should I have them mission plan it and brief the turns? Night? NVG? IMC? Really? Kind of like an approach plate. Same skin in the game. Lots of words to say good intent, hard to apply. The rest of the post cracks me up. This is why I like letting little kids ride in the cockpit if I have open seats. No cameras/youtube/feeds/blogs/etc for them to go post on, just an impression to be taken-in.

  21. I will not vote for anyone who runs on wanting more restrictions to the 2nd Amendment (it's bad enough that we already have restrictions). Obama has a record of wanting more gun control and said in a debate last year that he supported a renewal of the AWB...so that was a pretty clear reason alone for me not to vote for him. You voted for him, so obviously it didn't bother you too much. I'm assuming that free healthcare and food stamps are more important to you than your Right to bear arms. Like you said in a separate thread...it all comes down to values. Given their current policies/ways of governing, would you vote for Gov Cuomo in 2016 if he was running against Gov Jindhal? Sorry man, I don't feel sorry for you for not being able to get your ammo. You should have realized your guy wanted to take guns away and stocked up early...that's what a lot of us did.

  22. Remember its not about functionality, because liberals don't know anything about guns, they just want scary looking guns because it is a quick kill with their rocks for brains base, then they can get on to banning all guns later. Since we are talking about scary looking things when is someone going to introduce a bill banning her from appearing on TV, looking at her is quite scary.

  28. Completely disagree. This "equality" doesn't work in the extreme situations found in many combat units, because it violates "societal norms". And when you violate the "societal norms" of the people within that unit, I believe no good can come of it. Here's just 1 example (from today's Wall Street Journal): The Reality That Awaits Women In Combat A Pentagon push to mix the sexes ignores how awful cheek-by-jowl life is on the battlefield. By Ryan Smith America has been creeping closer and closer to allowing women in combat, so Wednesday's news that the decision has now been made is not a surprise. It appears that female soldiers will be allowed on the battlefield but not in the infantry. Yet it is a distinction without much difference: Infantry units serve side-by-side in combat with artillery, engineers, drivers, medics and others who will likely now include women. The Pentagon would do well to consider realities of life in combat as it pushes to mix men and women on the battlefield. Many articles have been written regarding the relative strength of women and the possible effects on morale of introducing women into all-male units. Less attention has been paid to another aspect: the absolutely dreadful conditions under which grunts live during war. Most people seem to believe that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have merely involved driving out of a forward operating base, patrolling the streets, maybe getting in a quick firefight, and then returning to the forward operating base and its separate shower facilities and chow hall. The reality of modern infantry combat, at least the portion I saw, bore little resemblance to this sanitized view. I served in the 2003 invasion of Iraq as a Marine infantry squad leader. We rode into war crammed in the back of amphibious assault vehicles. They are designed to hold roughly 15 Marines snugly; due to maintenance issues, by the end of the invasion we had as many as 25 men stuffed into the back. Marines were forced to sit, in full gear, on each other's laps and in contorted positions for hours on end. That was the least of our problems. The invasion was a blitzkrieg. The goal was to move as fast to Baghdad as possible. The column would not stop for a lance corporal, sergeant, lieutenant, or even a company commander to go to the restroom. Sometimes we spent over 48 hours on the move without exiting the vehicles. We were forced to urinate in empty water bottles inches from our comrades. Many Marines developed dysentery from the complete lack of sanitary conditions. When an uncontrollable urge hit a Marine, he would be forced to stand, as best he could, hold an MRE bag up to his rear, and defecate inches from his seated comrade's face. During the invasion, we wore chemical protective suits because of the fear of chemical or biological weapon attack. These are equivalent to a ski jumpsuit and hold in the heat. We also had to wear black rubber boots over our desert boots. On the occasions the column did stop, we would quickly peel off our rubber boots, desert boots and socks to let our feet air out. Due to the heat and sweat, layers of our skin would peel off our feet. However, we rarely had time to remove our suits or perform even the most basic hygiene. We quickly developed sores on our bodies. When we did reach Baghdad, we were in shambles. We had not showered in well over a month and our chemical protective suits were covered in a mixture of filth and dried blood. We were told to strip and place our suits in pits to be burned immediately. My unit stood there in a walled-in compound in Baghdad, naked, sores dotted all over our bodies, feet peeling, watching our suits burn. Later, they lined us up naked and washed us off with pressure washers. Yes, a woman is as capable as a man of pulling a trigger. But the goal of our nation's military is to fight and win wars. Before taking the drastic step of allowing women to serve in combat units, has the government considered whether introducing women into the above-described situation would have made my unit more or less combat effective? Societal norms are a reality, and their maintenance is important to most members of a society. It is humiliating enough to relieve yourself in front of your male comrades; one can only imagine the humiliation of being forced to relieve yourself in front of the opposite sex. Despite the professionalism of Marines, it would be distracting and potentially traumatizing to be forced to be naked in front of the opposite sex, particularly when your body has been ravaged by lack of hygiene. In the reverse, it would be painful to witness a member of the opposite sex in such an uncomfortable and awkward position. Combat effectiveness is based in large part on unit cohesion. The relationships among members of a unit can be irreparably harmed by forcing them to violate societal norms. Mr. Smith served as a Marine infantryman in Iraq. He is now an attorney.

  31. Good a place as any, Tony (co-pilot) was medically retired last week. I was good to go right up to Aggie (Gunner) saying: "You're my pilot for life, and I'm your gunner" while presenting him with a chromed .50cal barrel display as a going away. The kicker was it was Aggie's gun from that day. I got some damn dirt in my eye or something after that, then Tony's father got up and spoke.... I was screwed .... Best part, Tony got up and was cracking jokes during his speech. Dude has a great attitude and said he wouldn't do anything different even knowing the outcome. I'm not as strong as men like this......

  32. Hey! Don't forget forget all the support jobs when it comes to the PT test or physical standards, if I got to do X number of repetitions of a exercise and run a certain time for my age why does it have to gender specific. Sit ups or push ups should be equal and stop telling men we are stronger and faster and should do more than women. Lets make all weight, height and physical standards in all the same in all the branches. Equality!!!!

Summerville will probably be the next big real estate boom in Charleston, but Mt. Pleasant, West Ashley, and james Island are all good places to live with decent markets and 20 minute drives to work.
