Story time!
This past year I was in a similar boat. After working closely with my outgoing Squadron Commander, I asked if he would be willing to write my letter of recommendation... He agreed, and before I could send him a draft, he sent me a complete letter of recommendation. This letter was personal and enduring. Our new squadron commander was in the seat for 3 months prior to last years board. He too was advocating for me and UFT/UPT. He made some calls and determined that the letter would hold a lot more weight if it was authored by my Wing Commander. I was very apprehensive towards this. His explanation helped me make the decision. "Rob, members report to squadron commanders and squadron commanders report to wing commanders" When the wing commander signs off on a letter of recommendation he is trusting leadership down the stream to vet each and everything he signs.
At the end of the day, I sent my letter to the wing execs who, with the wg/cc, modified what my old squadron commander wrote. The adjustments were minimal and the letter still sounded very personal.
Despite my commanders guidance and the outcome of my Wg/CC letter, I was still apprehensive about submitting this letter. My mind changed after my original squadron commander gave it his blessing. I will forever be grateful for his leadership and kind words. That all said, I was not picked up last year. This years plan is to write a letter with my leadership here and have a connection I made at SOS endorse/sign it.
If I were a betting man, my letter of recommendation and its endorser had nothing to do with my failure last year. My poor AFOQT/PSCM score most likely the cause. (retaking it on 19 May and flying as soon as funds allow)
PS. I've heard the personal letter hold more weight in some of the past boards, can anyone confirm that?
