Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. [i know this question is asked occasionally, created a bunch of keywords to help search results] 1. Do all Guard/Reserve units require me to have my degree BEFORE the board date, or before the application date? I'll be commissioning through ROTC so if I get accepted I can get started right away... 2. Where are the best places to see which units are hiring? WantsCheck is always broken... 3. If a unit isn't hiring, how would one go about asking to see if they need new guys anyway? Is there a law or AF reg that says the position needs to be advertised?

I know that in the guard, every 90 days of title 10 order backs up the date you start collecting retirement. so for guard babies, they might have as much as 4-5 years and can start collecting way earlier. how about for a guy that palace chases, has been on active duty for 12 or so years and then goes into the guard. does any of our active duty time (deployments, formal schools) also count towards that and back up the date i can start drawing retirement pay? someone said no but i asked its like getting a signing bonus, usually it depends on the person you talk to and the way the regs are interpreted. is this an in depth researched fact? its just weird a guard guy would get…

  5. I am currently in the process of rushing units, and have submitted an application to the active duty rated board. It may seem like I am getting a little ahead of myself with this post, but I am thinking about what goals I would like to achieve if I can be hired to fly for a guard unit. I have an interest in going back for an Aeronautical Engineering degree in order to qualify for Air Force Test Pilot School eventually one day. I didn't rediscover my passion and enthusiasm for aviation until I was into my final year of college. Is this possible to apply for USAFTPS if you are a Guard pilot with all of the educational qualifications? Or is only available to AD pilot…

  7. Howdy. Both myself and a colleague at my unit finished UPT this past summer. Like many other MDS' our schoolhouse is extremely backed up and as a result (partially due to poor planning from the wing) we are facing a significant delay before we go to our B course. In my case it will be 9 months total of downtime (no flying) between UPT grad and going to IQT. I'd like to sell the idea of a fam ride program at my unit since the problem doesn't just affect me. Like I mentioned I have a colleague in the same boat and we have several new hires in the pipeline right now that will likely be in the same situation or worse. My thought was having some sort of structured fam rid…

Hey guys, I apologize in advance for what may be a dumb post, however I cant seem to find any info on this after doing some searching. I am in the process of preparing my application for Reserve and ANG units, and intend on applying to as many locations as possible. I'm compiling a list of some locations and cant seem to find whether or not there is a reserve unit at Holloman, and if so, would such units send anyone to UPT, or is Holloman primarily a B-Course/training location? Thanks!

  9. I’m currently enlisted in the ANG. I Have all my tests done, bachelors degree, ready to apply to guard units. I’m currently in contact with a reserve recruiter for an unsponsored board. My question is, can I get hired unsponsored, and in the time frame of waiting to go to OTS, interview and get hired by a Gaurd Unit and take the Gaurd route instead? My basis for this is I’m 26 years old and I want to get the ball rolling on getting into UPT. I really want fighters and plan on sending my package to both Wisconsin and Minnesota or whatever unit has a hiring board in the next few months. Should I wait to go unsponsored until I hear back from these units or other Gaurd un…

Hey guys, I’m a reservist pilot with a full time civilian job. I am finding it harder and harder to keep up with my currencies in the jet. Not to mention regular deployments and constant pay headaches. My heart is simply not into my job as a pilot anymore. I am nearing the point of dread every time I have to make the drive to the base. I have 2 years 5 months until retirement. I am looking for a seriously part time gig and even willing to go the points, no pay route if it means I can log points towards retirement, and not miss out on my civilian job and family events anymore. Does anyone have any good ideas on where to start? I have looked into the admissions l…

  11. I’ve heard about this happening before but I can’t find the thread. Here is the generic situation: Unit A is my preferred unit (location, airframe, mission, etc.). I also like Unit B, but not as much as Unit A. Unit B has a board a few months before Unit A. IF I am fortunate enough to get the slot with B, how unethical is it to also try and get a slot with A? This would obviously occur before any training would begin. On one hand, I see this as a douchey thing to do. On the other, they should have alternates right? Also, should I be upfront about it?

Bros, I went for an interview several months ago,I felt I did very well, and got great feedback, the biggest thing being I need to get better scores. I totally got destroyed by the math and admittedly, I should have studied a lot harder and I am looking to do some major self improvement. I'm already an Army pilot and I feel a little bad posting this because I don't want to make us all look bad. ive got a couple of the books, and am looking to get some math tutoring on the side using the books as a guide to what I should study. Are there any courses or AFOQT reviews that AFROTC guys go to or that you guys recommend? I have one shot left and I want to get…

I wanted to ask a question that I keep getting mixed responses to. I've been invited to a few interviews at ANG units but, so far, no offers. Like any good applicant, I've been reflecting on my responses, trying to improve my talking points for the next one, and asking for feedback from the boards (although most have not given any). I think I am fairly well qualified on paper and I've been able to practice and develop good responses highlighting my strengths and experience that, I think, make me competitive. One thing that I have been wondering, though, is about appearance. I'm currently a working professional. In the office on a daily basis I keep a closely-cropped…

Good evening everyone! I am a cadet in AFROTC and got picked up by the unsponsored Reserve Rated Board last Fall. Since then I have been applying to and rushing squadrons, but I am not sponsored yet. My dream has always been the CAS mission; however, I have not landed an interview with a fighter squadron (largely do to my scores). Initially I did not have my PPL and only had 7 flight hours, so this summer I got my PPL and I am up to 62 flight hours. My PCSM is 69 with an AFOQT pilot score of 73; I did not have any flight experience when I took the AFOQT. I am scheduled to retake the AFOQT soon, but my AFROTC cadre have asked me multiple times if I am sure I want to retake…

  15. This is a cross post from rotc. I'm in in college and thinking of joining the California Air National Guard to help pay for college since I'm too old to get an AF-ROTC scholarships (I'm 32). My plan is to do AF-ROTC and Air Guard at the same time. I was told some AF-ROTC dtachments take the Air Guard's 422/IMR in place of DoDMerb medical exam and I want to get the opinion of those who's detachments allowed them to do this. Was it difficult to get your detachment to take 422/IMR? I spoke to the 3 detachments near me here in Los Angeles and they all told me they didnt know if they would take the 422/IMR so that made it seem like it was a tough sell.…

All, I'm a new-hire at a Guard Fighter unit and have UPT dates for late June at Laughlin. However, personal extenuating circumstances are driving me towards Vance. My unit is aware of my situation and is willing to coordinate with anyone who has Vance dates and would like to swap. Please feel free to DM me if you are interested. -Cheers

Is there anyone who is prior service (not rated) and signed up for the TDART program? Were you able to get a waiver to start at something higher than a GS-9, or possibly a GS-9 but a higher step? Im a prior non rated Capt coming from AD and a few months from UPT graduation and also pinning on Maj. The idea of going from full time Maj pay to GS-9 is not ideal. Ill need 300 MWS hrs before going to GS-11 and then 750 before going to 12.

Please forgive me if I've missed something via search--I've tried numerous queries here, on other similar sites, ePubs, and generally via Google, but can't seem to find anything official that points to UPT age waiver availability for those over 33, and in my scenario, specifically re: an ANG UPT slot. In short, I'm working with a very cool and really genuine ANG recruiter of a non-fighter unit who's been super helpful in our initial convos, but I feel we may have some wires crossed re: UPT age waivers. Essentially, they told me that active duty cut-off age for UPT is 30, but on the AD site it says "Becoming an Air Force Pilot requires you to meet strict physical, med…

Afternoon all, I have a few questions regarding rushing units, if I can even visit the ones I'd like to due to covid. My main question is, should I show up in uniform as I'm a DSG ANG enlisted member even though I'm in civilian status? My plan is to fly to an airport nearby, grab a FBO vehicle and visit the squadron. I don't want to show up in civilian clothes and introduce myself as TSgt and look like a tard doing so. Thanks

Just turned 26 this past January. My AFOQT is scheduled this month, hopefully this time around it doesn’t get canceled. Due to Covid, it’s been taking me months to get it scheduled. Once that’s done my goal is to serve my country ASAP. I have no preference of airframe or location, if I had to choose I would love to fly heavies. I’ve been told I could be considered old by some units and that my time is running out. If that’s the case should I attempt and apply to AD? I’ve heard many say they’ve applied to units for 2-3 years before getting selected or even not. I would hate to apply and interview with a bunch of units only to never get selected for a UPT slot and end up be…

Ladies and Gents: They say insanity is "doing the same thing over again and expecting different results". There is a limit between insanity and determination here. I've applied to multiple units the past 2 year always ending in rejection. Had 1 interview at a fighter squadron last year. PCSM/AFOQT Pilot high 90s. Near 1000 hours flight time and CFI. Engineer undergrad and graduate degree with high GPA. Good job. Athletics in college and now. Age 30. Well- rounded. I ask for advice on my application post rejection and either it is no response or it is "we don't see anything wrong, but it was just really competitive this year". This isn't really c…

Thinking about transitioning to the Reserves as an IP for the T6. In the application it states that if selected, instead of the traditional “1 weekend a month/ 2 weeks a year” as an AETC IP I would be required to work 6 days a month. Anyone currently an IP at a UPT base got any info on this? Also trying to work as an airline pilot as my full time but worried about the commute. For those of you in the airline industry how do you manage the commute? Thanks!

Anyone have any info about the C-5 squadron in San Antonio? Looking for hiring info for a rated-type guy who is not qualed on FRED.

  25. Has anyone done the Guard Recruiting Assistance Program? I've got a friend who is looking into the Guard, and I'd like to do G-RAP if it means that I can buy now buy an AR-15. Is there some big catch or trap? I understand that you have to do some CBTs (as if I don't do a million of them already) and go to a meeting with the recruiter and the recruit. Thanks!
