Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by UPT-hopeful,

Some units allow (and encourage) off the street folks to come visit prior to board interviews, which is cool. Other units strictly don't allow it. Is that their way of letting us know that they pretty much only hire within? Seems to me the chances of getting picked up to work with a unit for 20+ yrs based on a 5 page packet and a 20 minute interview are pretty slim. Thoughts?

Folks - what's the general outlook on legacy Herk units in the Guard & Reserves? I'm exploring Palace Chase/Front options in the near-term and trying to gauge viability for 12Ms in anticipation of the FY16 Force Management Programs. I'll be sitting at 16 yrs active next summer and would need to crosstrain from 12B. PM or direct reply greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hey everybody, The gouge I've found over this topic is a little dated, so hopefully somebody has more current info. Below is my situation: My unit submitted my pilot application package to the guard bureau this week (Monday) and said it will take 6-8 weeks to receive training dates (AMS, UPT, etc). Can anybody say that is a fairly accurate waiting time (I know everybody is different)? Is it 'normally' longer/shorter than that? I only ask because my wife was going to come with me to UPT but was just recently offered a very attractive job opportunity (one that cannot be passed up). However, we have a son that is due in the middle of February so we want to keep …

Hey guys, Lots of info on this, but not exactly what I am looking for... Have a couple of questions on pay and benefits: It seems that ARTs go with the GS scale; is that fixed by my rank or the position itself? What step would I start with? How much pay do most fighter guys get from the reserve side? (Which I understand to be in addition to ART pay.) Flight pay? BAH/BAS? (My research says no, but just checking...) Health Care for the family? Looks like I could purchase for a price. (Should have cared more about Obamacare!) Anything else that I am not considering? Thanks in advance for the help/advice! Crate

I know the cutoff is 30 but does anyone have any experience or knowledge of NGB and how strict or not they are about pushing an age waiver through? The problem would not be with the unit I’m just wondering about NGB approval. About me... Turning 29 in 2 weeks. Will have PRK done in a month so I understand I have a year out to wait for my flight physical. Will be 30 during AMS & IFT

  6. I am at a crossroads with future. I will go into a little further detail about myself, but first I will give you my dilemma.... Manned Reserve Pilot or Active Duty RPA Pilot? Firstly I understand that both are great options and I am very thankful and appreciative for the position I am in. I have had little contact with AD RPA pilots and reserve pilots so I haven't had the opportunity to gauge where I fit in best. So about me. I am in the AFROTC program, currently a senior with an RPA slot. I have passed my flight physical and that is all taken care of. I am not a military brat, so I have had limited interaction with what active duty is like. I have been lurking on this …

  7. Can anyone talk to how this until will be manned? Are all the current and qualified Keesler guys moving with the jets? What about the guys from Pope who attended JMATS, are they moving that direction? Any 913th or former 403rd/440th guys that are moving know when hiring of active duty current and qualified J-model pilots will begin?

Please forgive me if I've missed something via search--I've tried numerous queries here, on other similar sites, ePubs, and generally via Google, but can't seem to find anything official that points to UPT age waiver availability for those over 33, and in my scenario, specifically re: an ANG UPT slot. In short, I'm working with a very cool and really genuine ANG recruiter of a non-fighter unit who's been super helpful in our initial convos, but I feel we may have some wires crossed re: UPT age waivers. Essentially, they told me that active duty cut-off age for UPT is 30, but on the AD site it says "Becoming an Air Force Pilot requires you to meet strict physical, med…

Hello, I feel ive searched this post pretty thoroughly but cant find an answer to my question. Does the ANG have a requirement that states you can have no more than 5 yrs of commissioned service( any branch) prior to going to UPT. I know AD and the reserves have such a rule refered to as TFSCD and it almost impossible to get a wiaver for . Thanks

Anyone else hear about the new RUTA policy? You can no longer submit your own RUTA in AROWS anymore. Your supervisor must submit it. I also overheard some hallway talk about us only being able to make up one UTA per FY and will lose the cash for any others, but just get points? I didn't totally absorb the details. Looking for credible answers if you are in the know.

I separated from active duty 1.5yrs ago after 7yrs and 9mo of service. I was not RIF'd or VSP'd, had no remaining ADSC, and did not separate under any special program. While going through the separation process every time it came up in the paperwork or in dealings with MPF it was clear that on their end they believed I had no remaining Military Service Obligation. I was close, but just short of the 8yr mark, so my understanding was that they were wrong. However, not having any desire to voluntarily continue in an IRR capacity if I didn't have to, I kept my mouth shut figuring I might be on the positive end of a military paperwork f*ckup for once. I've been happ…

FINALLY was able to physical at MEPS today after fighting medical records/waiver battles for 6 months. 20/20 vision but I failed the depth perception part of the eye exam. Has this happened to anyone else? The AF liaison office at MEPS said that it doesn't really matter until you go for your flight physical, so I'm curious if it is the same test up there or something different. NOTE: this physical was for an AD pilot packet but I'm going to age out soon (turn 29 in January) and I'm not interested in RPA. Basically went through to make sure I was fit to serve, etc. but I'm planning on applying to several guard units in the next couple months. Any info would be …

I rec'd a pilot slot in March of '19 and since then I have gone through a civilian job change while waiting for training dates (I still don't have any). The reason I left my first employer was because they were not supportive and made my life hell when I told them I was going to join the Guard. I didn't fight it - and moved on to a different company. I was up front to my new employer about my military commitment as well - they were supportive - and I was hired in September '19. I stood out over my peers on the company performance measures and worked more hours then the rest of my colleagues - but the decision was made yesterday that I would be included in their com…

According to the news today, the NDAA that Congress has agreed on and will vote on later (and which Sen Levin said the Pres will sign) has restored 32 Mobility aircraft and spared 3300 airmen, while cutting the A-10's from Barksdale, Ft Smith and the F-16's at Iowa. It also says the MC-12's would remain in the active duty force. I thought part of Schwartz's plan was to retire the 12 or 13 ANG RC-26B's and replace them with the MC-12's? Anyone know what's in the legislation pertaining to the future of the ANG RC-26's? Did they get spared as well, and if not, what's going to replace them? https://defense.aol.c...icid=apb2#page2

  17. I’ve searched the threads, but can’t find quite what I’m looking for. My question is, what’s it like to live about nine hours or more from your unit? I got hired at a unit in one state, but have a great civilian career opportunity in another state. Also, the unit does allow out of state commuters. Serving the unit comes first and that’s the priority, but I’d like to have a loose idea of a “plan” for the coming civilian side of my life in the upcoming years after training. For those of you who have a far commute to the unit, or have knowledge of others who do, what’s it like? I’m talking about in the ways of weather, stress, work/life balance, finances. Is it not…

I got my previous CAC at my guard unit.. then PCSd... CAC was getting unreliable, so I got a new one here at an active duty base. Now I can't log into the guard webmail (mail3.ang.af.mil/owa), keeps saying internal 500 error. The email address on my cert changed back to ###@us.af.mil. I used RAPIDs online self service to change it back to my guard email, but no luck. Anyone have prior experience with getting a new CAC while on an Active Duty installation? Somethin aint right with mine.

I've put together an updated list of all the UPT interview boards that are currently scheduled for 2017 (fighter units only), along with website links to the postings and phone numbers to call for more information. Obviously it is always changing so I plan on updating it every month. If you are interested, just respond to this post and I'll send you a link. Best of luck. Don't ever give up on the dream! GEKO

Once your packet gets to the Guard Bureau what exactly do they do with each packet? Do they look over each one individually and read all the comments, scores, letters of rec, and resume etc? Do they judge each packet in some sort of manner and then decide where to put people according to how they rack and stack among their peers? I'm just curious what amount of time is spent with each packet and how it's processed. I would imagine that candidates who are age critical or who have waivers in any way shape or form would get more attention.

I've already burned my MGIB-30 in the 1990's and am now totaling up what I can receive under Post 9/11 The Post 9/11 GI bill current eligibility standards Qualifying active duty includes: – Full-time duty in the Armed Forces, other than active duty for training – A call or order to active duty under section 688, 12301(a), 12301(d), 12301(g), 12302, or 12304 of Title 10 • Active duty periods may begin at any time, however, only portion served after 09/10/01 can be used to establish eligibility Based on the above, does this mean I can tally up all my Man days (MPA), Active Duty for Special Work, deployments, etc. and use these for benefits? ARC legacy 130 units are being required to send instructors for all crew positions to Afghanistan for a minimum of 6 months. Given the fact that most IPs in the ARC have fulfilled their pilot training commitment or can retire, what impact has this had on units that are dealing with this? After reviewing the merits of this deployment, one could easily call it a bad deal. Couple that with an optimistic airline employment outlook, you now have a potential readiness issue due to IPs retiring or leaving in larger than expected numbers. Any thoughts?
