Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by cagg011,

I've tried using the search function, but I'm not quite finding what I'm looking for. I recently finished up my FC1 with no waivers needed and am waiting for the approval to come back from AETC before my package is sent to State HQ and NGB. At this point, is it truly just a waiting game to have all the boxes checked off, or would there still be for any reason my package would not be approved? The reason for asking is I'm getting into a bind at my civilian job where my potential replacement could be transferring out of the region within the next month, and my supervisor and I would really like to keep him here to be able to back fill my position once I'm off to OTS, UPT, e…

The 122nd FS in New Orleans is having an experienced hiring board on 21 January 2018. This is for current or previous fighter pilots - Eagle experience not a requirement, but it certainly helps. We have full and part time opportunities available. Send resumes or questions to 122fspilothiring@gmail.com

Hey all- I'm an off the street select at an ANG unit. I was put in touch with the unit's recruiter and had one conversation with him about a month ago. I still haven't heard back. I haven't provided him any additional documents either. This is all pre-MEPS/FC1. Do you have any suggested plan of action if you were in this situation? I know about the waiting game, but when phones go silent, and emails aren't responded to I get anxious. I am considering waiting another month and then reaching out to the pilot hiring board and the chief pilot. Any suggestions? Should I call the other recruiters at the unit? In the mean time I'm finishing the last ho…

I posted a similar thread over on the general forum (see below) but in light of new info I wanted to post it here. We are being told that AFRC, and AFRC alone has interpreted the following JTR paragraph 0203 "Per diem allowance rates are based on the TDY location, stopover point, or other authorized official duty points, but not on lodging location. Ordinarily per diem is based on a travellers TDY location at 2400 hours (midnight)" as meaning that if we are on an out and back from Ramstein to say, Kandahar, if we cross midnight while enroute to Kandahar/Bagram, etc or while on the ground at Kandahar that we get Kandahar per diem even though we are returning to Ramstein…

Hello, Has anyone else experienced wing FM trying to force a member to PCS for seasoning training? I live about 3.5 hours from my duty location and my TDY order were denied because they are over 180 days. My understanding of the regs are anything over 180 AFRC considers it a PCS however this is insane. I still have a home and family to pay for while I'm finishing up MQT and they won't fund per diem for lodging. Is there any way around this?

Anybody know anything about PV promotions in the reserve. Looking at stats it's <20% to O-5 for IMAs (lower than the other line categories). What's the gouge on how to be competitive? I mean, besides PME. Does a guy with lots extended AD have a better shot than a part-timer? Do higher-level positions have better luck than lower (HAF vs Wg for example)? Just curious. Lot's of sites have the regulatory info, but I can find any analysis. As an IMA it's not like I have a unit to go ask either. Thanks in advance.

As the title suggest, is there best way to find available flying AGR positions? Just call the units? I read the discussion of ART positions switching to AGR positions so it seems like there "should" be more AGR spots available. Seeing as how I'm still learning Air Force-isms, I'm not for sure where exactly to look or who to talk to. 8 of my 13 years flying in the Navy has been working in the reserve world which makes me want to find an AGR spot to keep the reserve vibe going, just having a helluva time finding said AGR spots!

  8. I am looking to contact the 122nd squadron (the New Orleans F-15 folks) to learn more about what they are looking for. However, when I went on their website (159th Fighter Wing) and called the number in the contact us page, I just went to the webmaster's voicemail. If someone could give me some direction on how to go about this, it would be much appreciated. I know talking to and meeting with the squad is very important to increase your chances as a candidate. Any response is welcome, I don't have many people around me who know much about the ANG and I've been trying to figure this out for a while.

  9. Started by I don't exist,

Due to numerous issues, it’s been over a year since my unit submitted the initial RPA to hire me as an ART. The most recent RPA submission was exactly a month ago and the announcement hasn’t shown on USAJOBS yet. Anybody have similar experiences? The wife and I are kind of freaking out, looking at returning to AD (life situation doesn’t support the airlines).

  10. Hey everyone - I wanted to leave a detailed review of my experience with initial CA ANG recruiting through my first UPT interview. I recently went through the process of getting my PPL and taking all the required tests to apply for pilot boards (AFOQT and TBAS). I encountered a few pitfalls along the way that seem unique to my area (Southern California) and I wanted to share those with others who might be doing the same thing. Hopefully this helps anyone who's just starting out on the adventure. Feel free to PM me for more details if you want. To get right to it, here's a list of the specific things I ended up having trouble with. I put a summary of my background and…

  11. Started by sartoreabram,

I am 24 years old and plan on applying to both Reserve and ANG heavy units this Spring. I have my bachelors degree with a 3.33 GPA. My AFOQT scores are: P:79, N:73, AA: 79, V: 56, Q:88. My PPL checkride is scheduled for February 14th and currently have roughly 57 hours. I plan to get LOR from my CFI, my Scout Master (Eagle Scout), and a professor from college. I take the TBAS tomorrow and then will receive my PCSM. I know there is not much a way to tell me chances without a PCSM, however, if I do well on the TBAS and receive a good PCSM, is that the main factor considered? Or should I also retake the AFOQT? I know my scores are lower in Pilot and Nav than I would like th…

  12. Greetings all. Long story short, I'm an A1C from the MTANG, currently at Sheppard going through tech school in the 2A6x4 career field. I wrote a longer post about my background a couple months ago before BMT ( thread linked for those who care to look ) , so this is a sort of follow on. As the title implies, I'd like to know how early is too early to start visiting the units I want to apply to in the future. Once I finish tech school I'll have somewhere between 84 and 90 overall college credits (I have to speak to the education office and the college I'm going to be starting at to figure out how many will actually be counted). But after my MEST day…

Hey all, I was picked up by a heavy ANG unit last March with the contingency that I get my PPL by the end of the year. I had knocked out nearly all of my PPL requirements aside from my solo XC and had to abandon flight training and cancel my Checkride in October for COVID related reasons and have had a heck of a time rescheduling ( I live in a very rural area and getting a DPE out here is tough). Anyways, The chief pilot who gave me that offer has since retired. In speaking with the new chief pilot, I was informed that the PPL was no longer required. My question is ‘should I continue pursuing my PPL?’ It’s no longer required and I’ve already blown through $10,0…

  16. Started by Chida,

Is it possible to voluntarily transfer to retired reserve at 20 yrs? I have a guy in my sq who has prior enlisted time (so it’s not a msd retirement). ARPC is telling him he can’t req retirement until he gets 20 yrs, possibly not until his 20 yr letter. If that’s true the earliest he can retire is after attaining 20 yrs: +120 days to receive 20 yr letter +180 days notice =20 yrs & 10 months! Anyone have anecdotal experience with this situation?

  17. Started by MoonShot,

Today I heard from a unit POC that the AFRC has said there will be absolutely no age waivers approved for Reserve UPT slots. I trust that its honest feedback but has anyone else heard anything along those lines?

  18. Hello, my name is Evan Stahl. I am making an inquiry to see if anyone knows how I might be able to get in contact with Seymour Johnson's 4th fighter wing. I applied to the USMC PLC program (commissioning route for college students) and was not granted a guaranteed aviation contract. I can reapply next quarter (June 1st), but the contract is still not guaranteed until I am accepted. I heard from my brother that reserve squadrons can offer pilot slots and decided to reach out to you guys. I called the public affairs officer for the wing but did not get anywhere. Thanks guys

  19. Hey all, Couldn't find an existing topic that covers the question, but I'm sure I'm not the first and only one who's ever wondered it. I also will say up front that I'm sure the chances are slim if they exist. Long story short, I was a UPT stud, dot med DQed, went non-rated, got a waiver, re-applied, got denied to crosstrain by my CFM (didn't think that would be possible, but I digress). At this point I'm set up to attend a program with a new ADSC commitment for my next assignment, and I'll be about a mid-grade Captain by the time I can get out. What I'm wondering is - is it possible, have you ever heard of anyone etc. rushing a guard or reserve fighter squ…

  20. Started by StevenL7,

Hey all, was doing some research on guard units here in AZ and in trying to cast a wide net, I shot resumes over to the 161ARW and the 162d Wing. Going through the 162d wing site I saw they operate RC-26s under the 214th group in addition to F-16s but cannot find any info other than that. I would really like to shoot an application over to RC-26s on top of the 16s as it seems like an interesting mission and is close to home. Does anybody have any contact info or possibly any leads on if they hire for UPT slots? I have a feeling that they might not even operate the RC-26 anymore but can't find info on that either. Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Hi all, I tried to find info on another thread about this but couldn’t find what I was looking for. I was lucky enough to be picked up by a Guard unit and have been going through the post-hire process to include MEPS, FC1, and going to drill each month before training. I was hired out of state and have been taking PTO from my civilian job in order to attend these things. Am I required to take PTO from my civilian job if I am fulfilling a military related obligation? After a couple google searches I found some info on it but am not sure how it would affect someone in the Guard let alone someone enlisted for the purpose of commissioning. I’ve been burning through quite a bi…

  22. Bros, I am a 135 co wondering if there is any gouge out there for a planner role or some type of orders longer than a month to England, Germany… or anywhere really. With the rainbow gone, the Deid drying up, and LTMPA slots being inconsistent, I want to know what else is out there for tanker bums to take advantage of. I know if there’s anything out there… it’s probably for an IP, but will settle for an AC, with the final saying being “nobody wants a co”. Thanks in advance. Hey all, Attached is a snipping tool of the AFMAN 36-2100 talking about age and TFCS eligibility requirements. I just want to confirm that the way the AFMAN reads, for Guard units as long as you are younger than 33 when the individual unit announces their hiring results you will not need an age ETP? Got hired by a Guard fighter unit a few months ago and wanted to confirm the age requirements. Thanks.

This article details the USAF's recent decision to give the 127th 12 KC-46's. What are your thoughts on the 107th losing their fighter mission once the A-10 is divested. It seems like a Michigan based fighter mission has been on the chopping block for several decades now. https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2024/01/12/selfridge-air-national-guard-base-picked-to-host-kc-46-squadron/
