Long story short, I live in a city with a C-17 ANG unit and plan to apply for a UPT slot. Plan to stay local and fly heavies for a long time. I know that if you go the T-1 route at UPT you are flying heavies for your entire career, but if you can go the T-38 route you can fly just about anything. My question is this, if I perform well at UPT and earn it, can I track T-38s if I'm already with a heavy unit? I am a life long overachiever and the thought of not proving that I can perform at the highest level in UPT (tracking T-38s) is frustrating. Certainly, I will deal with it if I have to but I would love to have the flexibility.

Question came up in recent discussion with an old friend and I really didn't have an answer. He's flown charter, skydive aircraft, did the whole CFI thing for a little while, and is now flying CRJs with one of the regionals. On the quest to step up to the majors, he's also been scoping out some of the common foreign employers: Emirates, Korean Air, etc. He's had in mind to apply to a few Guard units as well and was wondering if the idea of working for a foreign company is even allowed while serving. Of course there are many considerations with such an idea: age limit, traveling back and forth overseas, employer's willingness to accommodate Guard commitment, deploymen…

Saw this on Breitbart https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2024/08/14/tim-sheehy-backs-bill-prevent-national-guardsmen-being-deployed-fight-foreign-wars/ If passed which I think it would not would cause the ANG to be questioned why it is needed then as its capabilities it has would be very difficult to access Thoughts? All, just looking for some advice here. I got out of active duty in July 2010. I have been running my own business since then and flying on the side to keep current with and end goal of getting on with a major. I got hired by a regional with a class in June (have a pulse, you are hired) but think I would rather get back into the guard or reserves part time. Also, since I have 10 years in might as well not lose that time and try to get some kind of retirement out of it (if retirements are still around in 10 years) Looking for others who had a 2-3 year break in service who got back in via the guard/reserves. I have a B-52/T-38 background and would probably prefer a AETC p…

Gentlemen, As some of you know, the guard slung out some rapid fire $20k cash bonuses for DSG pilots this year, and are now trying to recoup them based on “erroneous NGB/A1 guidance” about eligibility. The paragraph referenced implies that this is about some sort of service commitment to the guard post UPT. I’ve heard this “10-year commitment” mentioned before, but have never seen any sort of formal guidance or signed anything related to a service commitment. Can anyone point me to more info? Thanks. Lefty

Hi all, I'm looking for some detail on the "type" of orders that would come with the 3-4 years of pilot training + seasoning in a guard unit. I'm a guard off the street hire anticipating starting the OTS/UPT pipeline next year. I'm currently in the process of switching civilian jobs in the meantime, and am reviewing prospective opportunities. As one would expect, I'm looking at applicable military leave policies as well. The company I plan to sign on with provides paid military leave for employees that are "deployed for an active duty tour for a declared military action (to include Homeland Defense)." This is what leads to me to the above query, as all I kn…

I have a quick question about guard promotions. If you left AD as an O-3 and came into the guard, how long does it usually take to get promoted to O-4 assuming you meet the time in current grade, PME, etc? Curious how this process works. Specifically, I was twice deferred to O-4 on active duty, and want to know the promotion process in the guard or reserves from this situation. I have heard of many people who left AD because being twice deferred and were promoted in the guard/reserve.

First some background; I've been applying to almost every fighter board since 12/19, with no interviews, no feedback, no nothing. Fighters is the dream, specifically in the Great Lakes area (with the 115th being my "dream unit), but I'll go anywhere if hired. I saw the 115th posted a UPT board on their RC-26's, and I'm considering applying. Hypothetically, if I was hired there, would it be possible to prove myself as a pilot in the unit, and then possibly transition to the fighter side, or would I be locked it? Should I apply, or pass on this and keep pushing fighters? Abridged credentials: age 24, PCSM 94, Pilot 99, Nav 99 (rest of the scores are eh), BS with …

Just wondering if any ANG techs could answer a few questions. 1. Is the guard on the GS system still or do they use the new pay-band stuff? 2. Are instructor pilots automatically a GS-13? 3. How do the steps work, are you automatically step 1 when you get hired? 4. When/if I buy back my active duty time towards a federal retirement, does that also affect what step I am on? Thanks guys...

God knows that I don't know my arse from my elbow when it comes to the inner workings of the Guard/Reserve hiring/pay, etc. I was at the altitude chamber up at Langly today and made contact with someone from a certain guard unit that I might be interested in flying for some day. Back to my arse from my elbow: could someone please give me a general summary/difference between full time/AGR/traditional/technician, etc. Things in particular: pay/benefits (bonus?), which one are more conducive to flying for an airline. What the hell is a UTE(sp) day? Also I know that 1 year of guard time doesn't equal 1 year of AD time when it comes down to retirements, so if someone could …

Anyone have any experience with a guard pilot going to PIT and doing a temporary assignment as an instructor at a upt base? Is it even a thing, and what avenues are there to make it happen? Thanks in advance.

I am in the process of applying and was wondering if there are any units that specifically want to remain with the F-15 in the future. I realize one can't afford to be picky in applying, so I'm shot gunning apps to any fighter unit I can stand to live at that gives me the best ability to go home and spend time with family. A recent conversation with a pilot in a C unit told me they were indifferent to the -35 or new 15s. I think it would be cool however to fly the jet that was on posters hung in my room growing up, and it may be beneficial to invest more time in visiting those particular units. This thread is not intended to turn into a -35 vs -15 debate, there is a seper…

Apologies if this has been discussed before - wasn't able to find anything through the search function. Does pilot training title 10 orders make a guard member eligible for a VA mortgage? Spoke with a a couple people at USAA and the VA and couldn't get a direct answer. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Okay - I've found a few different threads that sort of tackled this question but I was hoping to get a better thread put together for this. I just realized that I could apply for Guard units (and that they existed), and that opens up a few more doors to me in terms of available units to apply to. I'm looking to stay somewhat local if possible, and I found some Guard units near me that fly the planes I'm most interested in. It would be ideal if I could get a slot at one of the local ones so I can be more involved in the unit's activities and have more opportunities to fly and is just better for long term (I'm in it for the long haul!). I don't have a problem moving for a f…

I just found out that I was selected as an alternate. I'm happy (I guess) because the board just could have said "No Thanks". But, what are the odds of me actually becoming a primary canidate? and would my chances increase of getting selected next year with the same unit? (Believe me, I'm not hoping one of the primaries fails their FC1 or anything like that. I believe they worked just as hard as I did) But any info on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Separate from guardreservejobs.com, what are good ways to reach out to the Guard/Reserve community? I'm doing some consulting work for a northeast Cirrus air taxi operator. We've found that hiring guard bums and reservists fits our model very well. Anyone have any insight on how to target guard and reserve pilots?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but Battlespace Flight Services is hiring for deployed LR positions. I know several people there and the money is excellent. See the ad posted at guardreservejobs.com https://www.guardreservejobs.com/newjobboard/jobs/rpa-pilot-5/

I want to get an idea of how long things take (training date wise) for people who get hired from a guard/reserve unit. I understand that there are many factors invovled (waivers, holidays, guard bureau workload, etc...) could everyone post how long it took to get dates and what dates they got at what time? This could give new hires a rough estimate of what kind of time frame they're looking at for their training. Here's my info: Hire date: June 2009 (for fiscal year 2011) Package submitted to guard bureau: October 2009 Brooks dates received: 16 December 2009 MFS at Brooks: 5 Jan 2010 As of now I still haven't received any dates for AMS, IFS or UPT It'…

Quick question. I am currently a new LT in a unit that is being BRAC'd to close. I know that I need to look for another unit to pick me up pretty soon since my unit gave me the blessing to start scouting out other units. However, I have strongly considered joining AD. I really enjoy the unit that I am in and the mentality of the guard/reserves, however, being a bum is not what it used to be with all the furloughed guys. When I first got hired, I didn't want to get a full time civilian job for the first few years so that I could be a dedicated bum and learn the ropes of flying with my unit and be dedicated to my unit. And I feel that if I did get a full time civilian…
