So I have ran about 20 searches and can't find answers to these. C-17 and C-5 Reserve units. I know in AD land, you do about 10 day trips and your biannual 4 month tour for C-17s. How about the reserves? What kind of trips and deployments do the reserve C-5 and C-17 squadrons go on? One more... if you are a part-timer out right out of FTU, what kind of seasoning can you expect from a C-17/C-5 unit? If you're part-time, can you get more trips? Can you afford to live on a part-time heavy reserve slot alone? Thanks for your help on this...

For any prior HERC driver can you tell me what are the monthly requirements for the HERC and how a typical deployment looks like. Thank you so much!

I know this story is four months old, but I haven't seen it brought up anywhere on here. NBC published a story alleging rampant sexual assault, racism, and a host of other issues within the California ANG (singling out the 129th RQW). As a UPT applicant who's visited some of these units, I have a hard time believing this, since the culture at every unit I've visited thus far seems friendly and laid back. Is this just NBC being NBC or is there any truth to these allegations? https://www.nbcbayare...-179569401.html EDIT: Investigative piece "Behind the Gates of the Guard:"

Hey everyone - I wanted to leave a detailed review of my experience with initial CA ANG recruiting through my first UPT interview. I recently went through the process of getting my PPL and taking all the required tests to apply for pilot boards (AFOQT and TBAS). I encountered a few pitfalls along the way that seem unique to my area (Southern California) and I wanted to share those with others who might be doing the same thing. Hopefully this helps anyone who's just starting out on the adventure. Feel free to PM me for more details if you want. To get right to it, here's a list of the specific things I ended up having trouble with. I put a summary of my background and…

Let's say a AFRC unit has a last-minute short fall filling a simulator seat and I live right next to the sim. Can I volunteer to sit seat meat and have the AFRC Sq. cut me a few days? Since it's a sim, I'd like to think the hurdles of approval wouldn't be nearly as high as it would be if they were trying to get me to fill a local training line in an actual A/C, but I'd like to know just how big of a pain in the dick this has the potential to be. I've got an email in with my budget office, but thought I would poll the community. Luckily, I have enough remaining AFTP's to use my own days that would have just been left on the table otherwise (before the end of th…

Live in SoCal (prefer San Diego), TR/DSG or fresh off AD and ready for a change of pace? Better family/work balance (no deployments)? More flexibility (and less/little AF pay but full USERRA protections/mil leave)? Must be a Major or Lt Col with 3+ish years left. Interested in working with/mentoring motivated youths? Must be self motivated and able to work independently (it’s a beautiful thing once you get it). I attached an old handbook that might answer some questions, but DM or post them if you got them. Wondering a bit about what career opportunities get closed if you go Guard rather than Active Duty. Are some of the items below still possible if you are in the Guard? - Exchange tour (Navy or foreign) - Test Pilot School - Thunderbirds/Demo Team - Overseas assignment (Europe, Korea, Japan) - Pentagon assignment One of the drawbacks I see to the Guard is being based out of the same place and doing the same thing for 20 years. Is being interested in some of the items above enough to consider Active Duty over the Guard?

Hi folks, I was planning on retiring in January, but with the current state of affairs, it seems that would be an ill advised move. However, I am in a pickle. I am an AFRES O3 with 19.5 years of service. (8 yrs enlisted) I was passed over for O4 last year because of a lack of recent award, as well as a referral OPR from 2015 for a failed FTF. The career development section in my wing failed to inform me of when the 2020 O4 board was being held, and I again failed to obtain a recent award. (totally my fault, I was very blinded by my upcoming retirement) Now I am afraid that I will be passed over again. My question is this: What are the repercussions for being pas…

Pretty straight forward question: I'm prior Active, now currently CA Nat'l guard AMMO troop for the past couple of years. I was wondering what are the chances of being deployed in the Nat'l Guard if shit went down, like a war with N. Korea or some kind of conflict? And let's say if my unit doesn't get deployed during a time of conflict, can I volunteer to go active? Thanks!

A little bit about me. I have always wanted to join the Reserves or ANG as a pilot. Growing up i never thought it to be possible since i was trying to chase after a career in architecture. Well after some conversation with a friend of mine from high school who is a C-5 pilot and a flight instructor for the Air Force he told me i still have a chance. Currently i am in the process of taking may ARE exams to become a licensed architect while doing all necessary items to obtain a flying position with the Reserves or ANG as a C-17 or C-130 pilot. I would like advice on how to increase my chances for such a position in a competitive market even with a pilot shortage. I fe…

So either I’m taking crazy pills this morning or AROWS is different. Looks like there’s no more inactive duty authorizations, just certifications. When you go into certifications instead of picking from a list of approved authorizations, you create a new duty type and proceed from there. Anyone seen any guidance on the change? Seems like a positive development in that you don’t have to route paperwork twice for the same period of duty, although now do you basically have to work the days on verbal orders before finding out if the paperwork in the system is approved? There is also a new Duty Summary page that is a nice backup to the excel sheet I currently us…

Hello, Could someone please shed some light on the process of transfering ANG units. If you are sponsored by a unit but haven't attended UPT yet can you transfer units? Would you do this before UPT, while there, or after UPT? Can you transfer from the ANG to the AFR, or visa versa? I'm not in this situation but was wondering what logistics are involved. Thank you

Hello, I'm new to this board, of which has been resourceful to me. So first off thanks everyone for your attention to this and helping others by taking time to give input! I realize this is rather long, so I'm grateful for anyone who sits down to read through this and give your advice!! A quick snippet of me and my situation - Always had inside me the heart to be a pilot for the air force, but due to a number of factors I decided against it and took another route. Spent 4 years in school for actuarial science, and spent additional 2200+ hours of studying to be an Actuary. If I'm honest, I never thought about what I wanted to do and just picked this path because…

How many of you went back to your civilian jobs (prior to UPT) after completing seasoning? As a current ANG enlisted member, I have a stable corporate job that offers 3 weeks of military leave every year that refreshes on January 1st. Would it be unethical to ask my HR department to utilize it and get paid for 3 weeks every year during the duration of my entire 3 year-ish absence? Note: I am currently waiting for TFOT and UPT dates (should be coming up soon since it’s been almost 2 years since I got hired) but am having severe “senioritis” symptoms at my current job.. Thank you for your responses in advance!

Does anyone work for a civilian company that offers compensation or benefits during their ANG duty? For example, the Feds (i.e. federal government) offers 100% of your pay for 15 days of AT each year, with the ability to roll over 15 days per year. Pretty legit...see here. Allows you to actually make serious money during AT vs possibly breaking even or even losing money depending on what your civilian job pays and your mil rank & TIS. I've heard from friends that big DoD contractors also offered paid mil leave time, Lockheed being the one named specifically. I'm sure there are others. BL: I'm trying to get a copy of a military leave policy from a civili…

Hello everyone, Currently I am a junior in college majoring in mechanical engineering with a few questions with regard to jobs outside of the guard. I have been searching through a lot of threads and haven't seen anything on the topic so I figured I'd ask. How hard is it to have a job that actually pays well outside of the guard? For instance, let's say I worked at Boeing or some other aerospace engineering company as an engineer... Does flying get in the way of actually being able to retain a job? My guess is it would depend on the company and what they are all about. And I know about the legal obligations companies have to keep your job while you get deployed, …

So I'm running into a bit of an issue at work. I'm a GS employee for USAF (not an ART) and I'm now being told that if I want to do reserve work and not use Mil Leave (LM) then I have to either burn Annual Leave or go on LWOP (Civilian). I've been coding my leave time as KG - Military Furlough because that is the only other military code besides LM in the ATAAPS system and the only code that will then utilize LWOP-US. Primary reason I am concerned is if I use LWOP vs LWOP-US (aka Military LWOP) it starts to negatively impact my benefits, step increases, etc because I will be coded in the civilian system as Leave Without Pay...no military designator on there... All the …

I'm applying to several Guard units in hopes of flying. My wife is about 1.5 years from graduating as a Nurse Practitioner. Some of the Guard units I'm applying to are not close to major hospitals. Do Mil hospitals employee civilians (specifically Nurse Practitioners)? I've used to search feature for this topic, but I couldn't come up with anything.

For anyone here who left for UPT training holding only a PPL or similar, what were your civilian ratings / job opportunities afterward returning home and going part time status? From what I read online, it sounds like commercial and instrument ratings are awarded after an FAA proficiency test. I'd love to hear how many hours you all came home with after UPT, air frame training, and seasoning orders. All PIC time? What jobs were available with your experience level? I understand this will vary greatly between aircraft, and even down to the individual unit but I'd like to start a conversation and hear from anyone willing to share. For context, I am applying to units an…

Greetings, I recently just finished MEPS processing for the unit I was hired into. Next is swearing in and getting enlisted then the FC1. When I swear in I know I’ll have a contract to sign. I’m a civilian that received a pilot slot with the OKC ANG and I’d like to get an idea of what the contract will look like before I go swear in. Can anyone give me an idea? Or what it really needs to say? Thanks!
