New poster, couldn't find anything via search. Anyone know about retiring from AD and joining AFRC as an ART? Thanks in advance.

Does anyone know if there is any truth to the rumor of a combat coded reserve sqd being stood up at LRF? Possible a Reserve super squadron/Wing?

I was recently hired back into the guard, had a 4 year break in service but decided to get back in to finish out my time since I had 10 years on active duty. I have not sworn in yet, in the process of getting back in. I let my civilian employer know that I would be returning to the guard part time (4 days a month) and now they posted my job online trying to fill immediately. I have not been let go, yet.. Since I am not in the guard yet do I have any protection against being fired? Here is an excerpt from USERRA, which covers future service (note 3): USERRA is a federal law intended to ensure that persons who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, Reserves, National …

Hi everyone, I'm wondering if any pilots here have attended a full time or part time (non-online) MBA program while a traditional reservist. If so, were you able top balance your commitment to your unit with your course load and were you able to get any tuition assistance from the guard/reserve? I'm in the early stages of submitting my application package to boards, and I'm considering getting my MBA a few years down the line. If this is something that's feasible for me to do, it's going to influence the units I apply to. Any other comments or criticism on my plans are welcome. Thanks! Hank

Looking for any civil service Reservists in the know. I'm starting a new federal position next week, but after one week I'm going on Reserve orders (IMA) for 3.5 months. It's not ideal timing but the General over both positions has approved the plan so it is what is for the GS position. My question is in regards to maintaining my federal time/benefits/leave. My understanding is that even if I'm on LWOP status for the duration, the time still counts toward retirement, correct? However, I won't accumulate regular leave or sick leave days during that time. I have heard though that as long as you have "some" time accounted for during each pay period, leave days will con…

Howdy folks, I'm an enlisted dude in the ANG, still a couple years away from finishing my degree in underwater basket weaving (I can still be a hard science major if it matters to the board that much). I'm a private pilot with just shy of 200 hours and have access to a lot more additional flight time in a Cessna 152 barring maintenance issues and other time commitments. Point being, I love flying, and have the tools to get to a professional civilian piloting career. But that's all fine and dandy, I really want to be a pilot in the military as well. I am totally fine with not having a professional civilian flying job if I end up AGR. Joining the military for a career in th…

Hey guys, I've been working with my local AFRC officer ascession recruiter for the past year. At first she ignored my voicemails and e-mails for a few months before I finally just showed up at her office unannounced. She admitted she was impressed with my determination and immediately warmed up to me over the next couple weeks to get paperwork going, scheduling MEPS, and calling around units who may need pilots. I told her I was interviewing at a unit in the near future and she wished me good luck and last time we spoke we were on good terms. I ended up getting selected by the unit and they are going to sponsor me for the November AFRC board! Good news right? Well, since …

Hey fellas, first off appreciate the answers and help up front. I'm an 11B guy with a couple years left on ADSC and looking to Palace Chase. By the time my ADSC is up (assuming I can't get out earlier) I'll be 33 years old. Is it realistic at that point to try and rush a 11F guard/reserve unit in the hopes of getting picked up or do I need to recage my nugget on some other goal. Also how far out from separation should I start working on getting in with a unit? Should I separate first, get picked up by the majors, then come back and rush? Or rush and simultaneously apply for the majors as well. I'm also coming up on my possible last AD assignment before separation and I wa…

I volunteer a few hundred hours a year for some non profits that help veterans and wounded veterans. Are there any days we can use towards this purpose? The definition of a PT day is pretty broad but I was looking to see if there is a precedent or if anyone has had success. Cheers

I am currently a Marine MV-22 Osprey Pilot. I love flying the Osprey and I love being a Marine. However the fleet has been tough on my wife and kids and I'm not sure if my family will be able to take another 13 years of this before I retire. My initial commitment will be complete in a couple of years and I am considering applying to one of the Air National Guard Unit at my home state which operate F-16 and C-130s. I've done some research on the transition process, however I've been unable to find specific answers as to how the ANG will look at my Tilt-Rotor time in regards to UPT. From what I can tell CV-22 pilots only fly the T-6 and UH-1 in flight training. However in t…

Apologies if this has been answered but I couldn't find it via search. I know how it works for those on the AD side, but unsure for guard. Hypothetical: If one currently lives in a state with 0% income tax and is selected by a guard unit in a state with double digit income tax, can you and your spouse maintain your domicile in the original state? For how long can you do so? Would it just be for the time from when you start (leaving for OTS) through the end of seasoning? Can you extend it indefinitely as long as you maintain full-time/active status? Do you lose it once you are no longer full-time/active status (and is that loss permanent)?

Hello all, I’m a junior in high school, and my dream job is to become an AF pilot. I’ve been hanging around this forum as well as getting in touch with some AF pilots on airlinepilotcentral. I heard from an F-16 guy in the ANG that a good route to go is to enlist in the guard/reserves before college to get it paid for and then apply to units after college. The other routes I could go would be either to not enlist before college and apply to units afterwards or to do ROTC and then hope for a guard/reserve spot. For me, I think ROTC would be a huge risk because the chance of getting selected for ANG/AFRC instead of AD is pretty low from what I understand, not to mentio…

Hey guys, I was a guard dude with a viper slot and now I’m just a guard dude with wings. I got a lot of things to figure out but I wanted to jump on this forum and see if anyone out there has insight on the process from here. I was told to go find a new unit but anyone that knows anything about securing a good job in the guard will tell you it’s not that easy. One of my biggest questions; how do I go from ANG to AFRC? I know what you’re thinking, “don’t do it!” But my situation paired with my desire for a particular part of the country is driving that move. Has anyone here done it? All I’ve heard is “it’s hard to do” and the “AFRC is a shitty deal” can anyone …

I have read that it is highly recommended to have your PPL when applying to a squadron. Is there any possibility at all of getting accepted without any flight experience whatsoever? I figured their had to be another way since some people can not afford to just go out and drop $7000-$8000 for their private?

Hey everyone, I have a hypothetical scenario that I was hoping to get some advice on in case it comes up. Quick elevator summary about myself: 30 years old, good scores, STEM degrees and work experience, PPL. I’ve been lurking on the forums for a while and I think I’m fairly competitive for heavies. Been applying for about a year now and have had a few interviews but no offers yet, but I’ve been improving my interview skills with each one I get. As everyone here is aware, the boards this summer were very sparse because of Covid. Many were postponed or cancelled. Because of the current climate I applied to almost all boards that were posted. After a …

So I have my 20 year letter in hand, but severely procrastinated on transferring my GI Bill benefits to my kids before I had to incur a 4 year commitment in order to do so. I would have a hard time leaving that money on the table by retiring, but I am SO ready to leave the AF in my rear view mirror. I recently talked with a guy (USMC) who said that he transferred to the IRR after 20 years of service, and did correspondence courses for points. Has anybody heard of such a thing in the Air Force? Responses are appreciated. Feel free to PM me. Cheers folks!

I’m gonna be moving to the DFW area when I separate from AD this year. I’ll be going airlines for my civilian job, but thought I’d try something less-traditional and see if anyone here has experience/advice on how to go about finding a part time, non-flying position at a local unit? I’ve looked on the reserve vacancies list on vMPF but can’t seem to find anything useful or informative. I’m aware of the ALO gig, but want something to fall back on that pays should Isom not cut the mustard at American in the next few years… Any advice would be much appreciated!

I have a friend who is a rated fixed wing Rescue Pilot on the HC-130J. If he wanted to one day transition to another airframe in the Reserves what would that process look like? Is Rescue to Bomber or Rescue to Fighter/Attack possible?

I have a few question regarding applying as an older dude. I'm currently an active duty CSO 34 years old with 13 years in. I have 3000+ hours in the MC-130 and I just recently applied to the active duty UPT board which required both an age and TFCSD waiver (which both were approved). I was unfortunately not selected for UPT (no shocker there) but was selected for RPA. If I decline RPA and apply to UPT from a guard unit will that prevent me from being picked up? Also any advice going forward with trying to get picked up for a UPT slot? Current scores are AFOQT pilot 94, PCSM 85 (will go to 89 after I update my hours), 48 civ hours with PPL check ride scheduled for the 24th…

I will be joining a heavy squadron where nearly everyone is an airline pilot. I don't really want to be away from home constantly, so i am weighing pursing a work from home job in the corporate world. Does anyone have experience on how you are able to make this work? I know USERRA protects you in most cases but potentially being gone on longer trips frequently could make it difficult for everyone involved, especially because most civilians don't understand how the guard/reserves work. Another challenge is that I am separating from AD and going reserves, should i wait to find a job until after I get back from UPT? I cant imagine any employer will entertain the idea o…

If any Guard Navigators have gone through IFS, would you describe how the program differs for you as compared: - to pilot candidates; - to active duty Navs (if at all)

Searched, couldn't find an answer. I was twice deferred on active duty. Got out. Found an IMA position. I'm about to meet my first reserve board and I'm not sure if I'm considered IPZ or APZ. In practice, the only real difference is DOR, but I'm curious. As an IMA, my CSS is active duty, so they aren't too experienced with reservists and the AFI doesn't distinguish. Does anybody know if I'm considered APZ or IPZ for the (mandatory, not PV) board? Thanks.

Looking for anyone who may have first hand experience on this track, or are on the receiving end of this that can give me any information/recommendations whatsoever on the process. I'm looking to commission into a guard unit straight from ROTC. I am a 7 year ANG vet and I'm now on scholarship with ROTC at a part 141 flight school. I can provide more information if necessary. This process is quite new and i have spoken with the Col. who is the man in charge of the program. He said i would be the first one to go through this program and he would like to use me as a success story so i'm really trying to make this happen. Anything helps!
