Jack Broughton 1925-2014 Thud Ridge is one of the best books that I have ever read. In my opinion the chapter Longest Day is one of the most heart wrenching and infuriating things published about the US air campaign and leadership during Operation Rolling Thunder. He would have been awarded a second Air Force Cross but it was denied by Gen John Ryan was denied due the "Turkestan incident." His willingness to go to bat for his subordinates is something that I feel would never happen in today's Air Force.

Anyone remember the names of Afghan students who have graduated UPT in the U.S. I think most of them were sent to Columbus, but with continuity over here (none), it's hard to tell. Has anyone tried taking an FAA test at the Advanced Instrument School in Oklahoma City? I'm trying to take my Military Comp test for commercial license and heard it's free to take it through the USAF. Looking to save a hundred bucks or so, and the POC listed hasn't returned/answered my calls.

Getting ready for a DITY to UPT, and I've come across several regs over government travel. There's a bit of ambiguity and overlap between them, so I wanted some clarification. Mostly, what's the difference between the JTR and JFTR? Both title pages say "for uniformed servicemembers," even though the JTR also says "and DOD civilian employees." Is there a primary reference that Finance and TMO uses for active duty travel? Are there any other regs you'd recommend skimming through for getting the most $$ out of a DITY? Thanks.

How would someone with active duty and reserve service accurately calculate their TAFMS time? Prior to commissioning, I served four years on active duty and five years in the reserve component. When I in-processed at Laughlin about three months ago, I discovered what I thought to be a discrepancy on the DD-214 issued to me prior to departing OTS. It reads that I have 7.5 years of TAFMS. I brought it up with the MPF here and they started a CMS case. That case made its way to AFPC and they confirmed that I have accumulated 7.5 years of TAFMS. Anyone care to comment on the QOL and Ops tempo of a C-5 Reservist? Is transitioning to a civilian flying job after initial training easier than the fighter guys because of the airframe? I spoke with a JSTARs Active Duty pilot a couple months ago who kept b*tching about the flying he was doing - and I'm hoping that's not the general feeling throughout the non-fighter community. Any insights would be great! Thanks!
