Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

  1. A long time ago someone posted a powerpoint presentation that was given during a retirement ceremony. If I remember right it was something along the lines of: Things I learned in the Air Force. It was a humorous presentation and essentially ended with something like "And everything can be briefed using Powerpoint, even a retirement" Does anyone have this ppt or can help me find the thread that had it? I UTFSF and google-fu to no avail.

  2. I think that the world view of America is that it is a country rooted in the deepest sense of patriotism and respect for its armed forces... so the idea that one of America's national sporting bodies (and associated teams) was taking money to salute the troops is a little shocking. The Pentagon paid 14 NFL teams $5.4 million to 'salute troops' https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/the-pentagon-paid-14-nfl-teams-dollar54-million-to-salute-troops/ar-BBjFQq9?ocid=iehp

Some Saudi prince is offering RSAF "pilots" (I guess that WSOs don't qualify) a Bentley each in return for their participation in the Yemen bombing campaign (which they have ended without having actually achieved their objectives). AFAIK, no caveat is in place about them actually having to have hit their targets. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-trending-32417773

I did a search and couldn't come up with anything so if this is a repost I apologize in advance. I have been out of the game for a while but I made a pretty penny with Apple (AAPL) back in the 2003 time range. I told myself to buy Ford (F) back in 2010ish when it was down around a $1.00 a share but never went through with it...and I will always regret not buying. But now Apple is back in the $94 range since it just had a 7 way split and I am contemplating getting back in. While I don't think Apple is the power house has been for the past 5 years I still think it will go back up a decent amount (probably not $700-800 sadly). Any other favorites out there?

  7. https://www.nypost.co...CRfOyJhODIuCcfM The New York Post needs to fire their research department, since everybody knows "per diem" is from the Latin "to pay for hookers and booze." Also, they should never, ever send any of their intrepid reporters on assignment to Pattaya or Angeles City.

Not sure this belongs here, but then again, where better than the Squadron Bar - whether an official one, or at your home? Via Christina Olds on Facebook: How many pilots know that Robin Olds was also a terrific artist? My dad humorously doodled and sketched his way through classes, briefings and meetings during his entire career. People have often asked me to share his drawings and I have finally put a few of them on my artist site at Fine Art America. Here are only a handful out of the more than 500 he left with us. So, if you want just a notecard or a big poster for your Squadron Ops room, have fun looking at these. I love his irreverent and usually politically incorr…

Anyone interested in a Viper Breitling order? I want one...and don't know of anyone starting an order anytime soon so I'll do it. I have done essentially no research other than being envious of everyone else's cool watch. I'll do the leg work when it seems like we're close to enough people being interested.

Updating my military photo is a pain in the ass as I promote or get some new trinket awarded to me. (yes.. I have to actually update my service photo. Maybe some of you are lucky enough not to) Would anyone find value in a service that lets you upload a photo, state what needs to be changed, and you get a new military photo back that is up-to-date? I'm thinking about starting a small business based around that concept, but I'm not sure if there's a solid need.

  19. I've been recently reading a lot about the DoD's response to aviation (and other class A) accidents. I read the original book on the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) by the US Navy creators Doc Wiegmann and Shappell. Basically, the book contends: 1. Aviation has gotten super safe, but accidents still happen from time to time. 2. When accidents do happen, they are predominantly caused by human factors (~70-80% of the time). 3. It is important for the safety process and future accident prevention to identify specific human factors and the standardized taxonomy that should be used is the HFACS framework. I completed this resea…

Gents (and Ladies) If the mods want to move this to the flying videos thread then I am sure they will, but I thought that this video was so damned good that it deserved its own thread. The Mach Loop The video was taken from a hill top in Wales where Air Forces from around Europe come and do their low flying. For the RAF, these low fly areas don't have a minimum altitude restriction, and for USAFE I believe the limit is 500' AGL. In this video, there is some good F-15E action, as well as a C-130J pass for you heavy types. The little black jets are BAe Hawk T.Mk 1As, and the guys flying them are students undergoing the Fast Jet portion of their flying training. …
