Lawman Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 It doesn't have leaders like MG William Zana... An Army general’s final ‘walk’ at the Tomb of the Unknowns MG William Zana, the only guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to reach the rank of general, took a final guard shift on the night he retired. At exactly 10 p.m. on the warm, last night of May, MG William Zana received his orders and began his final guard shift on the smooth marble stone plaza at the center of Arlington National Cemetery. In two hours it would be midnight, a new day and new month. A new guard would relieve him at his post, he would march off the plaza and suddenly, instantly, be a civilian. But for the final two hours of his 37-year career, Zana wanted one last chance to stand a shift he had held as a young sergeant: keeping watch over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. “I was Pvt. Zana when I showed up to the Old Guard,” Zana told Task & Purpose.“You know, all of us who raise our right hand and serve, there’s things that define you. First combat tour, first loss of personnel. For me, volunteering for and serving at the Tomb was absolutely both defining and shaping.” (Full story at the title link) I don't know the man, nor do I know much about his career other than what I read in his bio; but based on this article, I have the utmost respect for him! It’s serious how the members of Old Guard take that duty. I’ve seen several enter the Army warrant community in aviation and they will all tell you their time as a tomb guard was one of the must solemn moments of their lives performing that job.Bystanders also have no idea who is standing there performing the job because they intentionally don’t wear rank, which permits anybody to include very senior personnel to perform the watch as a Sentinal like the General did.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 6

Same thing with this A-Staff construct at the wing level. 1 4

contraildash Posted December 3, 2024 Posted December 3, 2024 It was a shitshow in AFSOC/HQ with him and Davidson pushing this crap. It's fine though, we'll ride this burning train off the cliff, then leadership will look around and ask again "where'd everyone go?" 1

In a peacetime environment who has the most to benefit in advertising USSTRATCOM assets within the DoD? Is the leader of an organization with proximity to middle America included in the the answer? When you can't advertise the other two, the airborne asset is the lead singer, readiness and morale be damned.
HuggyU2 Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 Let's see how USAFA reacts to this. https://fortune.com/2024/12/06/race-naval-academy-admissions-national-security-dei-affirmative-action-supreme-court/
HuggyU2 Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Well... The AF people that contracted the renovation were so incompetent that they got taken for $1.2M... so, they decide to simply tear the building down. What the fuck is wrong with us? https://www.daytondailynews.com/local/air-force-tears-down-historic-wpafb-house-after-12m-renovation/G6KURTKRGRDNNH5HSDHWINP6ZA/

Not saying that was a good use of funds or defending the decision makers here...but it wasn't exactly like the $1.2M was spent last year and it knocked down this year. They should have just knocked the rank requirement off and given it to an FGO who wanted to live on base, IMO. 1 2

What isn’t highlighted until pretty far down the article is that it was a DV “lodging” facility…managed by FSS. Then it was changed back to “housing”, managed by CE. Those two designations have different codes and requirements and regulations…for better or worse. So, converting it to meet standards for “housing,” whether for a GO, FGO, or anything else, was going to cost even more. Based on the other contract costs mentioned in the article, tearing it down was probably the best worst option.
ClearedHot Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 Opinions of lower-ranking troops could soon be considered in officer promotions "The pilot would include anonymous peer and subordinate feedback to be submitted as part of command selection for O-5 and O-6 ranks." Our Air Force leadership would look COMPLETELY different. Douche nozzles like Slife and Cat 5 would be busting rocks in the gulag. 1 11
CharlieHotel47 Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 hey bros. Our leadership at our wing is getting out of control. We got a new wing shirt and he has been raising hell about morale shirts. The colored ones one could wear with a flight suit. Do any of you guys know of a memo floating around asking for a waiver based on a tier level? I wish we could just bully our leadership into doing whatever we want as a part-timer. Hate to see my full-time bros suffer through nonsense. ANG tanker unit.... cheers

Tell them to pound sand and as long as the reg doesn’t say you can’t then proceed on as business usual?

08Dawg Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Doesn’t a shirt have more important things to worry about, like taking care of Airmen? ”Roger” or “noted” are appropriate responses to any bullshit from someone like that.

When Shirts and Chiefs are on about uniform standards, my assumption is that everything else in the unit including the morale and welfare of the troops is running swimmingly. If that’s not the case, those Shirts and Chiefs should lean forward and choke themselves.
HossHarris Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Remember, they’re enlisted and you’re an officer. every time they speak to you, task them with some trivial bullshit. Bring me the results of the last dorm inspection? How many CE Tickets are still open on the ops building? How about the dorms? I think the track is a few meters short, go measure it. Get me the names of every crew chief that grew up in Texas. The more tedious and vaguely personnel related the better. they’ll leave you the fuck alone when they realize every interaction comes with homework. 2 6 3

08Dawg Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Which brings me to another “wrong with the AF” point… we’ve got this ingrained cultural problem where a certain sect of SNCOs feel empowered to and expect that they can just run over captains, majors, and even lieutenant colonels. I call it “excessive professional deference”. Sure, you’ve been in longer and I respect your technical competence, but the last time I checked, an O-3 or O-4 still outranks an E-7, 8, or 9. Don’t like it? Tough shit, MSgt…go to OTS and get a commission. 6
