Hi guys I'm wanting to get in with the 147th Fighter Wing to fly F-16's or F-15's because they are located closer to my home area and it would work out very well. I'm trying to get an application together for me and could use a little help on that as well. I'll be reading through all the helpful guides up front tonight. Anyway I don't have much flight time. I only have around 1300hrs with 100hrs multi and the rest of the part 135IFR requirements. Both units have openings so I was wondering if any of you were part of them and could give me some insight. Would recomendations from any Lt. Col's here at the Laughlin AFB make a difference? That's about as high up the chain …

  2. Sorry if this has been covered before, but my prior search of the forums did not reveal much of what I'm about to ask. I'm a Navy Jet student who is facing a possible attrition down the road. Still in training, but seems probable as I'm just not getting carrier landings down cold and have grades on the verge as a result. I'm 28, had decent primary grades, and am interested in still flying for the military in some capacity if things don't work out here. Has anyone heard of any protocol regarding a Naval Aviator attrite or a DOR applying to the guard? Does attrition or DOR pretty much nuke any chances a guard unit or the Air Force Reserves would pick me up? And of cours…

I am a freshman in college in the ROTC program. I was just wondering out of the ROTC or the Guard/Reserve, to get a pilot slot, are both equally competitive? I am just looking at other options that I may have to join and fly Military. I would not mind being an Officer in the Air Force. But the unknown of what I will be doing up until Big week is kinda getting to me. Could I have a more concrete answer as to what I would be doing if I applyed Guard/Reserve? I hear they would hire me, ots, UPT, and all this time the unit is checking up on me seeing how I am doing, and during UPT I know what I will get out to fly. That sounds appealing to me. I just dont know. What are your …

Long story short, I live in a city with a C-17 ANG unit and plan to apply for a UPT slot. Plan to stay local and fly heavies for a long time. I know that if you go the T-1 route at UPT you are flying heavies for your entire career, but if you can go the T-38 route you can fly just about anything. My question is this, if I perform well at UPT and earn it, can I track T-38s if I'm already with a heavy unit? I am a life long overachiever and the thought of not proving that I can perform at the highest level in UPT (tracking T-38s) is frustrating. Certainly, I will deal with it if I have to but I would love to have the flexibility.

Is anybody familiar with the paperwork process for an active duty guy to fill a spot at a guard unit while still on active duty? I know some active guys have snagged a three-ish year assignment to the guard before... Just curious. Thanks in advance. Cheers

  8. I am a civilian that wants to fly fighters with the Guard for 10 years, and I know that the 10-year commitment to the ANG begins after getting wings. I haven't found a good source of information regarding this commitment, however. As such, my questions are only in regards after you get wings, since washing out prior to UPT graduation incurs no commitment. I have questions like: 1. What happens if you are medically disqualified from flying after being winged? (Also, where can I find more information on what can medically disqualify me?) 2. Under what conditions would that commitment be cancelled? 3. In what scenarios would one be committed to the ANG, but n…

Long time lurker here. Ok, after 4 years of working in a shoe AFSC, I left AD and am now a reservist applying for a Guard pilot position. This question may seem pretty retarded, but I ask because I am pretty obsessive about this and want to make sure I get it right the first time. I have assembled everything for the package itself, but wanted to know what folks would recommend as far as binding, etc. 1) Should I get this thing professionally bound? 2) If so, how should the OPRs be included? Split up so front and back are facing up? 3) Should each page be laminated? 4) Should each page be removable? 5) Photo: official head shot, or something casual like skiing…

All, looking for some guidance. I am looking into doing the Academy ALO program which is a category E, points only program. My question is in regard to rank. If you are an O-4 Are you allowed to continue to 20 years or do you have to make 0-5 to get to 20?

  14. So I just got hired at a unit across the country. I currently am a homeowner and am okay with selling my house to make the move. I will need to move for UPT, PIQ, and finally to my unit. What assistance is provided to somebody in my situation? Thanks in advance for any help you could provide!

I'm considering joining my local Air National Guard and have a couple of questions regarding initial pay. I have a bachelor's degree. I understand that I would go in as an E3. Since everyone in BMT is an airman (E1), would pay be as E1? If so, would E3 be sown on and E3 pay be at or after Tech Scool? Is there retroactive pay? Also, I've seen some airman drill before going to BMT, would pay then be as E1 as well? Who actually pays during the trainings: the federal government or the state? Bonus question... I have a full-time job and since I'm voluntarily joining the ANG, are they legally bound to hold my position until I finish and come back as opposed to being called…

Good day, aviators. I do not wish to ask extraneous or unnecessary questions, but am looking for some guidance. I want to know how to improve my chances of flying in the ANG/AFRES. I have done extensive research, and found WantsCheck.com to be a gold mine of great info! I have a few more questions for more qualified and personal advice: Lil' background info: about halfway to my undergrad major here in Kansas City. I have a near-impeccable GPA, and am studying English. (Bare with me lol) As of right now, I don't see how I could possibly have the $3K to obtain a PPl. I'm also aware my chances of having a good enough packet to get an interview would be a killer AFOQT…

  17. Hey Folks - I've read through the majority of threads/posts on this topic; but I couldn't find any specific answers. Question: I work at a squadron that works 4 10hr days/week (Mondays off). I'm transitioning from an AGR job to a GS-13 Technician Job. As a technician, I'm going to attempt to maximize my pay when sitting alert by doing that on the weekends, so should I consider Mondays for all intents and purposes a weekend day? Any other tips/advice other Techs can offer for maximizing my yearly gross income and minimizing my taxable? After running the numbers, it looks like I'm going to be just about matching my AGR take-home pay (13-year Capt, 8 yrs DSG e…

Anyone have a good reference or FAQ site they can give that spells out what an employer is required to do for reservists/guardsmen when it comes to their Drills, TP's, or "Mil leave" as some call it? Iv done some searching but most my web results refer to a reservists rights when they are called up for a deployment and how the employer must hold their job. I’m not looking for that, just regular rights when it comes to the basics as mentioned above. Thanks!

  19. Hi everyone, I'm wondering if any pilots here have attended a full time or part time (non-online) MBA program while a traditional reservist. If so, were you able top balance your commitment to your unit with your course load and were you able to get any tuition assistance from the guard/reserve? I'm in the early stages of submitting my application package to boards, and I'm considering getting my MBA a few years down the line. If this is something that's feasible for me to do, it's going to influence the units I apply to. Any other comments or criticism on my plans are welcome. Thanks! Hank

  20. Curious if anyone will be willing to share their schedules on a month to month basis. Obviously, dual flying jobs are very demanding. Are you working 25 days/month? Are you gone for most of the month? How do you balance your family/social life? etc.. Appreciate the inputs!

  21. Although I've been on active duty for over 20 years, please forgive me for not knowing more about the nuts-and-bolts of the Reserves. So, I'm an O-5 with over 20 years. Let's say a Reserve unit wants to hire me into a flying position. And let's say it will be full-time for a while, and then part-time ("traditional Reservist"?) - can I retire from active duty so that I get my retiree pay on days I'm not working as a Reservist? - on active duty, an O-5 has to retire at 28 years of service. Does that also apply to part time Reservists? - what other pitfalls and considerations are there for someone over 20 years?

  22. Howdy folks, I'm an enlisted dude in the ANG, still a couple years away from finishing my degree in underwater basket weaving (I can still be a hard science major if it matters to the board that much). I'm a private pilot with just shy of 200 hours and have access to a lot more additional flight time in a Cessna 152 barring maintenance issues and other time commitments. Point being, I love flying, and have the tools to get to a professional civilian piloting career. But that's all fine and dandy, I really want to be a pilot in the military as well. I am totally fine with not having a professional civilian flying job if I end up AGR. Joining the military for a career in th…

Just found out that my unit might be one of the possible victims of the 2013 budget cuts. There have been many rumors spreading around our unit that they will be shutting us down, however nothing is certain until the presidents budget is set in a few months. I have been working my tail off as a crew chief in my unit for the last three years while getting my packet together and taking all the neccessary measure to have a competitive package. Finally, I get the board date, at the same time find out that what I have worked for for the last three years may be shot down if our unit gets closed. Don't get me wrong I will be applying to many different units and already have pack…

Little background about me...I was an off the street hire last year for a Herc unit (guard). I attended my FCI last week and was unfortunately disqualified for defective stereopsis with no waiver recommendation. I have plenty of flying experience, but it doesn't seem as though my depth perception is good enough for manned AF aircraft. I was told by the flight surgeon that I was eligible only for RPAs at this point, but that I would need to find another unit to hire me. Any other strings I might be able to pull before I am forced to give up on my dream of flying Hercs? Any thoughts as to switching over to the RPA track for a guy who had his sights set on manned aircra…

  25. Does anyone know of anyone who flew cargo/special ops/tanker aircraft active duty and then palace chase / palace front to a fighter unit with the the guard or reserve? I’ve seen on bogidope that most of the units specify on the hiring memo that they are only accepting people who flew in that specific airframe for example. But I’ve heard that it’s very rare but possible for people to switch from active duty heavy to active duty fighter and slightly less rare and possible for people to switch from active duty heavy to guard/reserve fighter. Curious if anyone knows someone who did that and how they did that. Couldn’t find anything about this in any other forums.
