Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

Due to numerous issues, it’s been over a year since my unit submitted the initial RPA to hire me as an ART. The most recent RPA submission was exactly a month ago and the announcement hasn’t shown on USAJOBS yet. Anybody have similar experiences? The wife and I are kind of freaking out, looking at returning to AD (life situation doesn’t support the airlines).

I know that in the guard, every 90 days of title 10 order backs up the date you start collecting retirement. so for guard babies, they might have as much as 4-5 years and can start collecting way earlier. how about for a guy that palace chases, has been on active duty for 12 or so years and then goes into the guard. does any of our active duty time (deployments, formal schools) also count towards that and back up the date i can start drawing retirement pay? someone said no but i asked its like getting a signing bonus, usually it depends on the person you talk to and the way the regs are interpreted. is this an in depth researched fact? its just weird a guard guy would get…

Hello all, I’m a junior in high school, and my dream job is to become an AF pilot. I’ve been hanging around this forum as well as getting in touch with some AF pilots on airlinepilotcentral. I heard from an F-16 guy in the ANG that a good route to go is to enlist in the guard/reserves before college to get it paid for and then apply to units after college. The other routes I could go would be either to not enlist before college and apply to units afterwards or to do ROTC and then hope for a guard/reserve spot. For me, I think ROTC would be a huge risk because the chance of getting selected for ANG/AFRC instead of AD is pretty low from what I understand, not to mentio…

I am currently an ART in traditional associate unit that flies M-F. I am thinking about becoming a HS teacher and I am wondering if anyone has or knows anyone who has any experience/luck with trying to balance M-F flying with a "day job" like as a teacher. I know I could make up mil-duty in the summers but I would not want to go the whole school year w/o flying. To maintain a level of proficency that I would be comfortable with, I would like to try to fly 4-6 times per month but that would likely mean missing 4-6 days of work (school needs a sub, students "suffer"). I don't know if there is a better way of doing it. I am totally happy with being an ART but I h…

Does anyone know if the ANG and/or AFRC is offering retention bonuses for TR's and DSG's under this new FY24 Experienced Aviator Retention Incentive (EARI) program?

  7. First of all sorry if this is in the wrong section, I couldn't decide which one it fit in best. So lately I've been applying to UPT boards for the Guard while also working with an enlisted Guard recruiter as a backup plan in case nobody picked me up because this particular unit hires pilots almost exclusively from their pool of enlisted people. This past week I had two major developments - 1) my recruiter locked down a job in Aviation Resource Management for me, and 2) I got in touch with a reserve recruiter for the first time (for some reason I never really looked into them before and I'm kicking myself over it now) who thinks I have a pretty good shot at either a s…

  8. Does anyone have experience with getting selected for promotion while on AD and transferring to the reserves before you pin on? I was selected for major last year and my line number would have me pinned on in September of 19. However, I separated from AD in June and joined the Reserves before pinning on with the Palace Front program. I contacted AFPC and they said that i dont have to meet a majors board again with the reserves but my new date of rank is Dec of 2020 (when i hit 7 years TIG which is the reserve requirements to pin on major). This is over a year from when i would have pinned on had i stayed AD. Obviously im losing out on some good $$ while i wait the extra…

Looking for information from someone who has left the regular reserves (TR or IMA) and transferred to the IRR. I am looking to transfer, and then soon after get picked up by the PIRR (already have an ALO position worked out but waiting for the paperwork to go through)...but I want to transfer now. What happens when you transfer to the IRR without a job lined up already? Is this when you get the dreaded “break in service” and lose your date of rank? Are you medical records sent away to get lost in a storage facility to then need to be found and shipped back to your next unit? Do you immediately lose your security clearance? CAC card? Do you s…

I have a friend who is a rated fixed wing Rescue Pilot on the HC-130J. If he wanted to one day transition to another airframe in the Reserves what would that process look like? Is Rescue to Bomber or Rescue to Fighter/Attack possible?

  11. Anyone have experience with transitioning airframes in their career with the guard/reserve? How long did you give a unit before you made the switch? How hard is it to go from fighter to heavy or heavy to fighter/bomber?

Howdy everyone, Just seeing if anyone had advice for contacting the 345th BS in Dyess. I would very much like to apply to their 2024/2025 UPT board, but I am having some trouble getting in touch with them to arrange a visit during their November rush weekend. I have sent several emails to no avail and having trouble with the number listed on milrecruiter. Curious if anyone else is having this issue. Apologies if this isnt the right place to post this, but I am at a bit of a loss. Thanks

So I am in contact with an AFRC recruiter for their November unsponsored but also reached out to and active duty recruiter for their November board. This recruiter noted that I cannot apply to both and that I need to pick one or the other. Can anyone confirm this?

How common is it for pilots to transfer units after a few years, and how difficult of a process is it? I done know any who has done this, so I'm just trying to get an idea of what happens, and if it might be frowned upon. Thanks.

Hi, For example, HIANG has three squadrons under its one 154th Wing. Let's say you get picked up by the unit and they give you a C-17 slot and you go to UPT and return to fly the C-17. The question: Is it relatively easy to transfer over to a different squadron after a few years in say the C-17 if you wanted to then fly the F-22 or KC-135 for whatever reason? I understand the process of transferring different ANG units, but am confused on the protocol of changing airframes within the same unit. Thanks

I was already selected by a reserve unit at their UPT board, but now they are turning to the option of sending me unsponsored to get the process moving quicker. I'm not sure how that all works. Looking through the AFRC articles about applying unsponsored, but not seeing too much other than the fact it exists and what it's for. Any insight?

I am trying to get in on the unsponsored reserve board in Nov. I have not yet gone to Wright Patt for a physical and now my recruiter is telling me that the only way to get an appointment is if you are sponsored. "We were notified yesterday that no one is going to WP unless they are sponsored by a unit. Recruiting Service was paying the bill for the unsponsored to go to WP, and Reciting Service is now out of money for travel." Can anyone confirm this? If it is true, anyone have a good way to get sponsored in a month?

I see in the AFRC UFT Guidebook that they are no longer taking unsponsored applicants. What is the reason for it, is it just temporary? Will the unsponsored route ever come back in the future?

  20. Started by JustACadet,

Good evening everyone! I am a cadet in AFROTC and got picked up by the unsponsored Reserve Rated Board last Fall. Since then I have been applying to and rushing squadrons, but I am not sponsored yet. My dream has always been the CAS mission; however, I have not landed an interview with a fighter squadron (largely do to my scores). Initially I did not have my PPL and only had 7 flight hours, so this summer I got my PPL and I am up to 62 flight hours. My PCSM is 69 with an AFOQT pilot score of 73; I did not have any flight experience when I took the AFOQT. I am scheduled to retake the AFOQT soon, but my AFROTC cadre have asked me multiple times if I am sure I want to retake…

I was picked up on this month's unsponsored board and I'm hoping to track t38s. Will I have any influence in this decision? Also, I already have my FC1 and am on the scroll. Approximately how much time exists until I can expect to get orders for OTS? Additional info: I'm currently enlisted guard and am in the process of transferring to the 340th. Things are moving forward and I feel close. Just looking for specifics or insight.

For Guardsmen going to UNT, is it a PCS, or two TDY's? I'm getting conflicting info when I ask around. Also, if looking to get into an earlier UNT slot, does your unit work that through the ANG? Or through the active duty people at AFPC? For any of you that got moved up to an earlier date, any good insight to share? Thanks.

It appears that the other "upcoming boards" thread was removed or has disappeared? If I'm wrong then mod's feel free to delete this thread or merge, but otherwise... In other news, 104th recruiters say letters and call's should go out this week. Best of luck to all.

So I've been trying to figure out my pay during OTS, UPT, and as a traditional reservist. Forgive me if some of these questions sound dumb, coming from the civ word and still figuring out the mil pay structure. Wondering If any one still in UPT, or just finished could give me an idea to some of the questions below. My civ employer offer's differential pay for long term and short term deployments. They consider anything under 30 days short term and over 30 days extended. They only pay dif pay for 12 months of any extended deployment. Question: Will OTS and UPT be separate orders? Or will I be considered "deployed" from day 1 of OTS until I become a traditional reservi…
