Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

How common is it for pilots to transfer units after a few years, and how difficult of a process is it? I done know any who has done this, so I'm just trying to get an idea of what happens, and if it might be frowned upon. Thanks.

Gentleman, Quick question for those that went street to UPT via the guard. I am early on in the process after having been selected by a guard unit (MEPS completed, awaiting FC1 and clearance) my recruiter has mentioned to me that it may expedite the process if I enlist with the unit and become a drill status guardsman within the squadron in an admin role. The enlistment would have a contingency in place in the event I am disqualified prior to attending TFOT and UPT. Throughout my research of the process I don't think I ever came across this. I understand that at a certain point I would swear in to the DEP program like I did before my enlistment. However this seems li…

Please include variables like what’s the best regional airlines to fly for is and how long do guys expect to fly for them until being hired at a major.

Completed the daily browse of Bogidope and if you look today, there is an eerily small list of UPT boards coming up. My question is: Because of the airline furloughs do you think UPT boards for the ANG/AFRES will not happen as frequently as pilots return to their squadrons looking for full time orders? I understand there will always be a need for younger Lts in the squadrons, but could we see that need be significantly reduced if the squadron manning as a whole increases?

  5. I am a current federal GS employee and will be going to OTS/UPT for the reserves. I plan on coming back to the govt job after transitioning to a part time reservist after seasoning. I'm wondering if anyone has any tips/tricks on maximizing the benefits while in training (i.e. how to clock/use Military leave, annual leave, and LWOP strategically your advantage)? Examples: Should you mix LWOP with annual leave? Use all banked annual leave at once so you earn more time off? Use a little annual leave every pay period so you're always in a pay status? Be in a pay status in pay periods with holidays? Etc? Hoping somone on here has previous experience with this …

30 year old male. What would be chances of applying for a guard or reserve spot if disenrolled from ROTC > 10 years ago. I currently am a CFI/II/MEI with hundreds of flight hours and fly helicopters, airplanes and gliders. I am in a profession that required graduate school and am burnt out. Flying is my real passion. I can get many strong references. Thanks! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Do full time pilots in the guard/reserve fly more than AD? I was talking to an Apache pilot in the Army Guard and was blown away at how much he flew a week.

Hey everyone, I'm going to enlist in a fighter unit and wanted to know if there was such thing as a "best" job in regards to getting the most face time with the pilots. I've really only heard crew chief or avionics. Would it hurt someone if they enlisted and did the planning and scheduling? Want to make sure I'm getting the best job to increase my chances. Thank you!

In light of personal life changes… Is it possible for an AFRC pilot to take an assignment with an RPA unit for a few years and return to flying later down the road? I understand this would require attending RPA training and mission qual and then further training if I ever want to fly manned aircraft again.

Has anyony gone to the AFRES national board un sponsored and been given a slot? I am on the sponsorship hunt and have been calling AFRES units all over the nation, with no success. I have a fully completed package that I am trying to get in the right hands of people and they just blow me off. I figure if I can get a slot through the national board, then at least units will return my phone calls and e-mails. It seems like a much selling point saying "yeah I already have a pilot slot all you have to do is let me hang out for a while, realize I am not a D-Bag, and sign the sponsorship papers" I know it is a slim chance but has anyone here done this.

  12. All, just looking for some advice here. I got out of active duty in July 2010. I have been running my own business since then and flying on the side to keep current with and end goal of getting on with a major. I got hired by a regional with a class in June (have a pulse, you are hired) but think I would rather get back into the guard or reserves part time. Also, since I have 10 years in might as well not lose that time and try to get some kind of retirement out of it (if retirements are still around in 10 years) Looking for others who had a 2-3 year break in service who got back in via the guard/reserves. I have a B-52/T-38 background and would probably prefer a AETC p…

Please go check out the new GuardReserveJobs and send me any feedback. There's a few known issues, but they should be fixed soon. Also, if you're good with graphic arts and wanna try to knock out a nice banner for the page (where is says Smart job Board), lemme know. I'll upgrade your job listing or resume to the most baller VIP status I can. Thanks!

I did some searching, but no avail. I'm looking into the possibility of being a sim IP (GS-12 position) as well as a TR at a UPT base. For those of you that have done both, any pros and cons? Recommendations? Things you liked/didn't like? Would the pay be better, equal or worse than what I currently earn?

Hello guys, I enlisted into an F-16 ANG unit and chose aircrew resource management as my career field. I read here on baseops that lifesupport, intelligence, avionics were also good options, but they were not open when I applied. Working with aircrew appeals to me since I eventually want to fly for the unit I enlisted into. I would like to know more about aircrew resource management from anyone who may have some insight. How often do they deploy? What are deployments like? Do anyone know of an aircrew resource guy who earned a pilot slot?

Hey everyone, I'm highly considering competing for a pilot slot in my current ANG unit. Once concern I have is how ANG pilots are able to balance their full time job and home life with their flying commitments. Is it true that you go into the unit once a week? Do you find yourself having to take off of your full time job to fly? Any information will be helpful!

  19. If this is in the wrong forum feel free to move it. I just wanted to get some opinions. I am prior service ANG and have been invited to 4 interviews this year at cargo units and one with the 106th Rescue Wing, but haven't received any invites for FW's yet. I have the option to switch to a local Army National Guard unit and fly the LUH-72 Lakota's or HH-60's. I just turned 28 and I am trying to weigh the pro's and con's of switching services. Anyone familiar with the process or have any input? Anyone know of any units (other than the 104fw and those on the Guardreservejobs website) still accepting packets?

Does any have Lt Gen James F Jackson's email address? I need to send him a quick message requesting him take me off his fucking spam list. Jesus.

  21. I am heading down to TFOT and TFIT at Maxwell in January and I am a non prior UPT ANG select. My unit will only issue me ABU's and most of the Blue's but not the Blue's Coat, Pants Shoes and some of the other essential accoutrement and non of the Mess Dress that is included on the reporting instructions. Finance just informed me that I don't get the 400$ for officers to buy clothing because I am not an officer... I can probably get that later but still a pain. Also stopping by the BX i am sure that all the stuff I need will cost way more then that. Any body have any recent experience with this stuff? Do I just eat and it and pay for the stuff? On a related not…

Hey guys/gals, Thanks for taking some time to review my situation and offer inputs.. much appreciated: - I am a 6-yr Air Force Capt in a HD/LD SOF career field looking to apply to ANG UPT positions (anyone that will take a look at me, but ideally fighters) - I can separate in late 2018 (at 29 yo), but will be within 3-4 months of turning age 30 at that time - Thanks to some help from medical contacts, I'm approved for a FC1 physical (albeit with a couple medical waivers for eye issues) Some of the hurdles I'm tracking.... - Will likely need a prior commissioned service waiver as well as an age waiver IF (big if) I am hired - I hav…

So my background is I am a Navy E2 Hawkeye pilot that got picked up as a full time reservist flight instructor in the strike pipeline flying t45 goshawks. I plan on finishing my career in the Navy but am wondering if it's possible to get hired by the ANG after. By then I'll be 42, have about 3500 + total time. I've always wanted to fly fighters, would it be possible to get hired at my age? If so, how would that affect my pension which would kick in at 42?

I got a hold of an Air Force Reserve recruiter and he replied with the following: Thank you for your interest in the Air Force Reserve! At this time there are a very limited number of available vacant positions to become a commissioned officer. Is this true or is he trying to make up his enlisted qouta?

Hello all, I'm a junior in college at a collegiate aviation program and was looking for info on joining an ANG unit(possibly Navy also). I have 3.5 GPA, about 200 hours, CFI, ME, IR, I have not taken ASTB or AFOQT yet but I have started studying(a little). Is this somewhat competitive? I have heard having prior flight experience is a huge help. Can I apply to out of state units? I assume fighter units are much more competitive than tanker/airlift. If anybody has any advice or info that'd be great.
