Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

It's a couple of weeks past now (and I'm beginning to sober up) and I'm happy to be able to report that Lucky Devils and Forgotten 1000 had a successful Las Vegas reunion - nineteen years after the Gulf War. From countless pitchers and drinks at TGI Friday's at the hotel/casino, to golfing on Friday morning, walking 'The Strip', and then out to Nellis on Friday evening for a shot(s) of Weed at the USAF "Fighter" (sorry, old habits die hard) Weapons School bar, and a meet-and-greet / pre-airshow party / full contact crud game hosted by the Nellis O-Club (followed by a repeat performance at the Friday's bar.) Saturday morning was bright, windy and cool as we were off…

  6. Went to the Dos Gringos Wikipedia page today, apparently it was deleted in October because they don't meet Wikipedia's standards for being an artist. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Dos_Gringos "Although these guys have an interesting story, I could not find any reliable sources at all about them. They have an All Music entry, which reveals that all but one of their CDs was self-released, with the exception of one released on the Viper Driver label. I don't think this meets WP:MUSIC standards for inclusion. Deprodded."

A little snippet of Jeremy's going away festivities got put up on youtube. He's leaving us (FANG Crew Chiefs), to fly the KC-135 with the Reserves at Macdill. Good Luck at UPT Buddy!!!! (director's note: the bucket had a quart of mayo and five boxes of anchovies that had just got done cooking in the microwave-getting really foul smelling)

Author Stephen King to Pay for Troops' Holiday Trip Home Sunday, December 13, 2009 BANGOR, Maine — Author Stephen King and his wife are donating money so 150 soldiers from the Maine Army National Guard can come home for the holidays. King and his wife, Tabitha, who live in Bangor, are paying $13,000 toward the cost of two bus trips so that members of the 3rd Battalion, 172nd Infantry Unit can travel from Camp Atterbury in Indiana to Maine for Christmas . The soldiers left Maine last week for training at Camp Atterbury. They are scheduled to depart for Afghanistan in January. Julie Eugley, one of King's personal assistants, told the Bangor Daily News that the …

My wife and I are looking to take a trip to China. Anyone have any personal experiences about good places to visit or recommendations for travel companies/websites to use? Anyone ever have trouble getting a visa when the military occupation comes up? Bad experiences, good experiences, funny stories all welcome... thanks!

Not so much a news story as a interesting (gross) picture of the kind of guy who always seems to sit next to me on planes. It brings up the debate over charging obese passengers extra. Personally I think this dude should be put in the cargo hold, but that's just me. Should obese fliers pay more? MSNBC video on the subject

I like this forum but I have to ask, do squadrons even have bars anymore? I mean real bars where guys hang out after work (at least when you're night flying which is an auto-kitchen pass...even for SNAPs), gamble, tell stories, read the Doofer Book, write in the Doofer Book and raise hell on Friday Nights before heading to the Big House? I mean a real bar where fist fights happen followed by high fives and some more beers. Do fighter pilots even get into fist fights anymore? Have they installed wine racks and potted ferns and comfy furniture? Did they turn the Bars into day cares for all the pilots married to each other? I think one reason SNAPs are so sensitive…

Anyone have an idea of when you are supposed to receive your follow-on assignment after getting class dates for being a boom? Is the process the same as doing your dream sheet and hoping you get what you want or is it the usual "military needs?" I already have class dates for BBOC EAUC SERE and Water Survival but no word on what airframe I will be on (is that something we find out during training and do you have a choice in the matter). I am also a retrainee (IFCS or GAC for short). Need any good or bad aspects please

  16. A French Infantryman's View of American Soldiers by Jean-Marc Liotier The U.S. often hears echoes of worldwide hostility against the application of its foreign policy, but seldom are they reached by the voices of those who experience first hand how close we are to the USA . In spite of contextual political differences and conflicting interests that generate friction, we do share the same fundamental values -- and when push comes to shove that is what really counts. Through the eyes of that French OMLT (Operational Mentoring Liaison Teams) infantryman you can see how strong the bond is on the ground. In contrast with the Americans, the French soldiers don't seem to writ…

Whatever your feelings are about global warming, yo have to admit that environmental monitoring isn't a part of the CIA's mission.

Not sure if this should go under WTF, or as a new topic (or if it should even be posted - Mods, feel free...) and I wasn't even drinking (heavily) when I decided to sign up, but: Let's get bald for kids with cancer! You heard it right - I'm shaving my head in solidarity with children who have cancer and typically lose their hair during treatment. When you're already ugly, bald can't be much of a step down, but it is for kids with cancer. Please join me in Raleigh, NC at the Hibernian Pub (I'll but the first pint) on 27 Feb at the 'shaving chair', or support me and the kids by making a donation at the link below. First, I want to say that my thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti. They already had it hard enough and this disaster will do nothing but make their lives even more difficult than it already is. That being said, any word on what the Air Force is doing for relief efforts? Who gets to go? Is it possible for a casual LT to volunteer to go down there and help out for a few days? Keep these people in your thoughts...

Search was exhausted prior to post... I don't know about you guys but I'm pretty pumped about the super cool new patches as described below: Honestly what kind of BS is this? Don't give me a patch, give me a day off or a bonus. Not some ridiculous iron on pat on the back for not being a fat ass. I want the "mediocre, not dying any time soon" patch! On another note, here's hoping it doesn't become mandatory like a RB. One more way for the alterations and MCSS to make a buck I s'pose.

So I'm sittin' in another fine training class today learnin' all kinds of great stuff. Fortunately, we have our laptops with us and are encouraged to take notes and look things up on the internet. After I run out of real work, I notice an e-mail from a woman with the last name "Beaver". I chuckle and then get an idea...what other cool names are in the global directory? Here's some I found (look 'em up...they're all legit): Anita Hoel Anita Johnson Beate Cox Max Koch Doug Graves Hai Ho (Hai Ho, it's off to work we go...) Thai Ho (no sh!t…
