...sigh At the end of the day, I think this deputy (and cops writ-large), are tee'd up for these kinds of failures by design. Statute, case law, policy, training, and leadership. It's a soft-statism that manifests itself into a mindset that they can go anywhere, do anything, and at the slightest hint of discomfort, escalate to violence without fear of consequence. And it's reinforced and enabled by judges, or in this case, by a well-intentioned jury that at an individual level wants in their heart to support service to law enforcement. Mark my words: this very same situation, played out tomorrow, would result in the same outcome, within a rounding error of 100%.

@Pooter @disgruntledemployee You’re not wrong on the “fame seeking” risk of bat shit crazy people. I think public execution (combined with short timeline between conviction and execution) would do more to dissuade capital crimes than it would boost the “for fame” crowd. But that’s truly unknowable currently, just a hunch. I would certainly be happy to simply see the decade(s) long appeals process stop and more capital punishment (specifically if you killed someone else with intent or a repeated gross negligence scenario such as 2nd DUI with fatalities).
