After "working" the show last year and getting almost no time in Box 102, it was great to go as a spectator and just enjoy. Friday and Saturday saw spectacular weather and great flying. U-2 pilot Popeye Thomson raced in the Bi-plane class and finished third in the Gold category. The final bi-plane race was cancelled due to winds on Sunday. Too bad as he wanted to race more. U-2 pilot Nova Beaubien's plane was out this year getting the engine rebuilt, but he was asked to fly the pace plane... pretty cool! Didn't see Hacker, but I'm guessing he was working hard like he usually does, and probably got some great photos. TBirds show looked to have a few new things, and overall I enjoyed it. Glad to see them make needed changes to make it look better and keep jets in front of the crowd more. STOL drag racing has become a big deal, and it was incorporated in to Reno this year. Unfortunately, Draco crashed departing Reno today and was destroyed. Mike Patey's ok thankfully. The Crash itself is about the 6:18 point in the video. Some very good lessons in "decision making" on Mike's very humble recollection of how he ended up in this situation.

FWIW Andrew Bacevich is a self-described conservative with a view of US foreign policy that is deeply skeptical that military power is an all-purpose salve that it's often used as. This has put him at odds at times with the current President as well as both of his predecessors. He's also a retired Army Colonel who served in Vietnam who earned a PhD from Princeton and lost a son to combat in Iraq. All this to say: read him for yourself and figure out if you agree or disagree with his thoughts. I don't count myself in the camp that agrees with him reflexively, but I respect his thinking enough to at least read his writing on occasion. My recommendation is to start here, published in 2008.

@pilot I was explicitly not making an argument one way or the other on the facts. The reason I responded to you was that you essentially dismissed Bacevich as a Trump-basher / Obama boot-licker & nothing more, and I thought that was unfair given his credentials and long record of consistent thinking and writing on US foreign policy. Read widely, deeply and even read people with whom you might be inclined to disagree. Start your list with well-credentialed voices that have relevant expertise - I would put Bacevich in this category. Probably good advice for life in general.

Hey guys, Apolitical question about our rules - I noticed a part-time Guard officer running for office who consistently criticizes the president. She has said some pretty inflammatory stuff about President Trump. Regardless of which side of the political aisle you are on, isn’t this completely illegal? Do Guard members fall under different rules?

Perhaps you can try to get her fired from the military like that one marine that said "screw obama" a few years ago... next thing the poor fella is apologizing and getting kicked out of out of the military. We have a few folks holding office in our state, but I never hear about them mixing the military with their political views or agendas. Or perhaps I haven't been involved enough to experience senior officers unable to draw a line between military duty and political preference. If Generals can do it... then why not lower rank individuals. At the democrats' convention, Marine Corps Gen. John Allen, loved by all devil dogs out there, offered a thinly veiled swipe at Donald Trump. "I know that with HC as commander in chief, our international relations and foreign policy will not be reduced to a business transaction or deal" But my personal favorite was at the Republican convention. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn joined the crowd's chants to arrest Hillary Clinton. "Lock her up, that's right," Flynn said. "Yeah, that's right, lock her up". I believe that our nation's soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines should not have to wonder about the political leanings and motivations of their leaders. But I guess in a non-military status, everyone is entitle to their own opinion.

Bacevich fought in combat in Vietnam. He retired as an infantry Colonel. His son was killed in Afghanistan. Colonel Bacevich teaches history at Boston College, is devoutly Catholic and a conservative. He's wrote several well-reasoned books that do a pretty good job explaining the dangers of continued American misconduct abroad. You're the only one I see bringing up politics and Trump here.

Executive summary.

When I went through T-6's 16 some odd years ago, my class had 5 dudes with CPL/IFR/CFII ratings with 400-1,000 hours of flight time (to include myself) and we were ranked 1 thru 5 in the class. Coincidence? Definitely not, BUT, and this is a big BUT, we were all willing to forget a lot of what life was like in an a GA aircraft flying under FAR's and use our seasoned basic airmanship to our advantage (and not have a chip on the shoulder acting like we knew it all). Being able to free up brain cells from having to worry about flying straight and level allowed us to learn new things more quickly. By the time some of the less experienced dudes started to "get it", it was too late. I felt I had a huge advantage when it came to the instrument phase, because most of that phase contained the same principles as instrument flying in a 172, but things just happened much faster. The playing field starts to even out once you get to the T-1 or T-38. Overall, dudes/dudets with more flight time, in theory, should be more confident in any new airplane. I used my CFII experience to my advantage outside the airplane and took one of my bros in the class having a hard time during instruments to the cockpit trainer a few times to help him with basic course intercepts, holding patterns and approaches. My advice to anyone with any extensive flying experience going to UPT is 1. Never pass up the opportunity to keep your mouth shut even if you know something from your prior experience (don't act like a know-it-all). 2. Don't be an individual with your experience and help your bro's. 3. Don't get cocky, because the margin of getting into a humbling experience is probably a bit tighter than you are use to.

On one hand, you have pointy nose dudes bitching about the lack of quality of UPT/IFF grads they are getting because the training pipeline is so badly undermanned, and then in the very same post, come up with this elitist BS about how other people don't have what it takes to train your guys. Like, okay, fine, the rest of us weren't exactly knocking down the door to come join your dumpster fire, but hey good luck with not having a midair with your shitty VR-trained UPT Next wingman that the last 3 training programs have been passing the buck on.

A lot of emphasis here on SUPT T-38 training for future fighter pilots. You don't need a fighter or bomber pilot to teach T-38 rejoins or tactical. MIF is MIF. There is a reason why IFF exists. If the product after the FTU is shit, you have nobody to blame but the 11F community. Only 11Fs teach at IFF and FTU.

No. Also to race Reno, the aircraft cannot be "swept wing". Lots of L-39's and one L-139. I expect an L-159 will eventually get there. A few years back, the Snowbirds finished their 9-ship demo, and instead of landing, they all took off for the pylons and did a lap. It was hilarious, and they had a good time. The jet course is small enough that if a "modern" and much faster jet flies it, it will be a constant 6+ G's around the course. 1B.

Fighting in combat in vietnam, or any war for that matter, does not make one a foreign policy expert, nor does it make his opinions right. Neither does retiring as an infantry colonel. Neither does being Catholic. Neither does being conservative. Neither does losing a kid in combat. I’d venture to say 99.999% of gold star families are not foreign policy experts. Teaching history at BC also does not make one’s opinion on Iran more correct than others. If being in academia is the litmus test for having all the right answers, more people from academia should be running the country. Trying to support your argument by throwing these facts out takes away from argument Reread what I wrote. Maybe more slowly this time. Did he or did he not support Obama’s Iran deal? Has he, or has he not, blasted Trumps undoing the deal and calling it a disaster? These questions are rhetorical. I personally disagree with his stance on the Iran deal. I don’t think Obama's deal was going to be very effective in preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear power. And it’s too early to call Trump’s Iran policy disastrous.
