I have no experience running a boat, but I wonder how much technical knowledge is required to be an effective commander? I can see this perspective to some extent; to use an AF comparison - no way should a non fighter-pilot run a fighter wing, other than in “extreme” manning emergency where a fighter pilot cannot be sourced at the time (and at min the non-FP is a combat oriented pilot). But, there are commands where really only leadership and decision making capability matter, and technical expertise is somewhat irrelevant (schools, ABW, etc.) I wonder which AF example boats are more comparable to.

Exception: carriers should be commanded by pilots. The SWOs running them are just like shoe clerks - have no concept of who the mission is (supported vs. supporting).

AETC is inept? There is talk of MAF FTUs going to AMC as well but likely will stay with AETC; AMC barely has the manning and resources to cover its own ops equities.

As a former FTU instructor, AETC has the airspace and the training lines. There’s a reason why the KC-10 did their FTUs in AMC and the -46 FTU is under AETC.

Cracks my ass up, the silverbacks were convinced Kendall was going to gut AETC--turns out it was cruiser.

Someone thinks its more efficient. We did AC upgrades under the OSS because the schoolhouse was slot limited, and they got done faster.

AFSOC had a mixed model for many years. In the Gunship, basic C-130 Qual CP/AC/IP training was accomplished at Little Rock. All mission training was accomplished by the training school house (19th SOS), at Hurlburt. Slife broke that model and moved Gunship training to ABQ along with a bunch of T Coded birds. A huge loss in my opinion and not at all efficient for a small fleet. Under the previous construct new folks would fly with a variety of current and qualified folks on joint training lines, the transfer of knowledge was MUCH faster and they graduated combat ready. As is usually the case there was a political play to keep iron in ABQ.
