Good military/aviation books
"Fearless" by Eric Blehm. It's the story of a SEAL named Adam Brown who was killed in Afghanistan in 2013. What makes this book so unique is that Brown overcame being a hardcore drug addict, had multiple debilitating injuries, and a myriad of other challenges to just get into the Navy. I greatly enjoyed the book because it looked at the man and not just his time as a SEAL. It is a very inspirational book and a great page turner. https://www.amazon.com/Fearless-Undaunted-Ultimate-Sacrifice-Operator/dp/0307730700

Satellites?
In Afghanistan, I've seen a ton of shooting stars/satellites since it's so clear and there's very little light pollution. ...standing by for U-2 guys stories of reading "how's my driving" bumper stickers on satellites every 5 minutes.

If you could only bring three DVD's on a Deployment.
1 instructional DVD on how to put a thousand+ movies on an external hard drive. 2 backup copies of that DVD.

Who wants a T-38?
Don't worry about the odds. If you want a T-38, put that as your #1 choice and see what happens. While I agree with our bros here that realistic expectations are important, don't psyche yourself out at the fear of possibly not passing in a follow on trainer. If you aren't willing to challenge yourself, you'll never really improve and will end up as that copilot/wingman for life. Secondly, if it's been your dream to fly a fighter/tanker/helo/whatever, don't look back later on in life and wish you would've at least tried instead of taking the path of least resistance. My $.02

Promotion and PRF Information
Not that it matters, but as of a few classes ago SOS does show the process how it goes now with the computer screens and all of that. I got the impression they were trying to move away from the "1 minute review" thing. I learned a good bit about how the process actually works in those lessons.

What's wrong with the Air Force?
As an SOS DG, I can tell you that it is complete crap how much weight is put on it. I got DG because my flight did really well at the point earning events and I tried to help out in that regard. I have several bros that were better individually than I was while at SOS but did not earn DG due to the fact that their flight didn't do well.

AC-130 AFSOC Questions
Agree with all. I'm not a Gunship guy, but I am an AFSOC dude. The only differing perspective I have is that my wife and I have grown closer with all of these deployments and and being gone so much. It's honestly like how you're still close to your bros from UPT 10 years later or the guys you played football with in high school. You go through challenging circumstances together, it reveals the character of the other person, and you grow from it. And finally, attitude will make or break an assignment. I know guys that were at Cannon and loved it and I know guys that couldn't wait to get out of Hawaii. If you show up with a crappy attitude, your experience will be crappy. If your like doesn't like the idea of you flying a C-130 with a bunch of guns sticking out the side of it, she's probably a communist. (Kidding)

Drone Pilots: We Don’t Get No Respect
Well, I guess I'm not George Patton and think that people should be given a heads up beforehand if they're staring down the barrel of an assignment at the bottom of their dream sheet. It may be the military, but you don't have to treat people like dogshit just to fill a square (ref any thread about AFPC).

I own an '08 Tundra and love it. Definitely has a ton of power (5.7 L V8) and very reliable. I've had zero maintenance problems with it and owned it for 3 years.

Checkride Scoring
When I went through, there was a stud in a different class who used the ability within Tims to respond to his grade sheets and why he didn't agree with certain grades. 100% true as he showed me one and asked if I thought his argument was right to dispute his most recent hook. I tried to talk him out of it, but certain people can't be helped. Don't do that or worry about the grades. Try your hardest and help everyone as best as you can and you will have a successful time at pilot training - regardless of assignment.
