This. Again, leaders need to step up and make decisions. If the AFI is getting in the way, commanders need to have the balls to say “Ok, ignore a, b, and c for now and let’s get the mission done”. Their next phone call should be to their boss: “Sir regulation X is preventing my people from doing their jobs efficiently. I’ve directed them to ignore certain provisions. Here is my supporting documentation. Don’t like it? Feel free to replace me with a yes man. Delta is still hiring.”

I am currently a junior in college and here is my breakdown Age: 26 about to be 27 in a month (will be 28 when I graduate college) GPA: 3.68, Criminology Major/Business Minor Flight Hours: 6 (just started taking lessons towards my PPL, hopefully will have it by summer). I practice with my college club hockey team and I will be practicing with my college baseball team and I will be playing MSBL. I also work full time as a writer and I have previous experience working as an exhaust tech/lube tech/mechanic's apprentice before I went to college. I haven't taken the AFOQT yet. Last time I talked to an Air Force recruiter when I was beginning my sophomore of college he told me I needed to be graduated or near graduation to take the test as I need to be filling out an officer packet. I'm looking to go Air National guard, I would prefer a state like New Jersey, Vermont, Idaho, Michigan, Wisconsin, Maine, etc. Somewhere up north where it's cold and has mountains and cheap land. I prefer fighters but I don't mind heavies, I will apply to everything. I would like a Law Enforcement career for my civilian job. I have lots of family in New Jersey and New York that are in Law Enforcement that can help me get started on that end. I wouldn't mind going Reserves or Active Duty as well. The only question I ask is, how should I get started? Should Is start calling units now to see if I can visit them in the summer? (I see a lot of threads saying you should attend meet and greets).

Was at a legacy airline flight training center earlier this year. EVERY current and retired pilot there was excited to have us and all exclaimed that they need good pilots; hurry up, get out of the AF and apply. We need you. On the flip side, exactly ZERO squadron, group, wing commander in the last year or two has asked what they could do get experienced pilots to stay. None has stated that they need good pilots. You'd think that someone at a local level would make at least a half assed effort to see what they can do to get guys to stay. It's been very clear that the AF organization does not value people who know what they're doing. At squadron and wing levels, sure. At the end of the day, as long as the billets are filled, the machine continues to function. Good enough, as long as the quarterly awards are turned in on time.

They really left no hope in the "0%". I honestly guess that's better than leaving room for interpretation. I would rather not stress myself out this week lol.......although knowing myself, I'll still be checking the forums everyday.

Easy solution: no ceremony.

It might be a bit of a long shot to get a TX slot into a strike-fighter aircraft - Every Marine Capt / Maj I know in the Hornet / F-35 is getting out and half of them are looking at the Guard. But don't let that stop you from trying if it is what you really want. I think Homestead F-16s picked up an Army helo guy a year ago or so there is that. I started my transition when I got to VMFAT-101 as a Hornet IP after a four year fleet tour. After visiting multiple units and about 18 months, was offered a TX slot by a Guard FS prior to finding out I was no longer medically qualified. Bottom line, reach out and visit the units you're interested in. The squadron that actually offered me a slot was one in which I found a contact via LinkedIn. After a few messages he gave me the squadron commander's cell phone and told me to call him, I did, he told me to visit, and things went well. They're just looking for good dudes, who are sincere, and want to keep flying tactically.

Classic associate with 9th Bomb Squadron (Active Duty)... Strong TFI relationship. In the past 345 BS/CC has had G-Series authority over the garrison 9 BS folks during 9 BS deployments, and on one Guam deployment the 345 BS/CC actually commanded the 9 EBS for 2-3 months. 345th has participated with other 307 BW players (93 BS/343 BS BUFFs) on a couple of EUCOM trips and I believe was also the lead squadron as the 345 EBS for a short TFI Fairford deployment in conjunction with the 9 BS and 7 OSS. Anecdotally there is (or at least has in the past been) an expectation that members either deploy for half of every 9 BS deployment or all of every other 9 BS deployment, but I think this is managed through carefully controlled mobilizations so dudes get dwell protection. YMMV based on needs of both units. At home station I know the AGR, ART, and trougher types are generally making RAP (4 sorties/month inexperienced and 3/month experienced)... Don't know about the true TRs, but I imagine it could be a crapshoot depending on aircraft availability. Anecdotally the participation expectation is at least 6 days/month, which I understand is in line with other CAF-affiliated Reserve units. I'm not smart on average sortie duration, so can't help you there. When the 9 BS is in garrison they only fly 345th-only lines (callsign CROOK) during UTAs and fly as part of rainbow crews with the 9 BS during the work week.

Counter-argument to all this...suppose there were an AFI change that made the life of a flying crew easier. Maybe a reg that said MX would start the jets and aircrew would only take jets that MX had already pre-flighted. What are the odds that, if such a regulation were written into existence (purely hypothetical example here, I get it), that an OG or a flying squadron commander would dictate that their people continue to do something that caused them more work, in contradiction with the AFI?

I know someone that was picked up last year with no flight hours. Seems as long as you have a strong package everywhere else it will still work out.

I have 2 great uncles that fought in the Battle of the Bulge. 1 is still alive. I went to Bastogne 10 years or so ago and took a bunch of pictures for him. Amazing to have him tell stories when he saw the pics. He heard his brother was there as well and went to find him. Found each other, shared a frozen K ration for Christmas dinner, and then went back to their units. One uncle was riding on a tank the next day and they came under German artillery fire, knocking him off the tank and unconscious. Woke up and only heard German voices. We kind of need the airmen to follow the AFI. It’s not their fault. Leaders like the Supers, CCs, MAJCOMS (I’m not holding my breath) need to step up.

I'm a helicopter Guard guy who got selected for TPS (Navy TPS at Pax River) during last year's board and I know of at least one Reservist in each of the last two classes at Edwards. So yes, it's possible to apply/get accepted to TPS as a Reservist of Guardsman. For what it's worth, I'm a Guard baby and have always been a Traditional ("part-time") pilot while working as an engineer. I just wanted to pass along some information for those interested. Application Process: The application process is no different if you are a Reservists or Guardsman. Simply follow the instructions in the PSDM. AFI 99-107 has a blurb that states that AFRC/ANG officers need to submit proof of eligibility to return to and remain on active duty with their application, but that was not true as of June of 2017. If in doubt, contact AFPC. Active Duty: If selected, you will be put on EAD under the Voluntary Limited Period of Active Duty (VLPAD) program for ~4 years (1 year for TPS and a 3 year TPS ADSC). Under the VLPAD program, Guardsman are separated from the ANG, but remain Reserve officers. Once your EAD tour is complete, you would have to go through a recruiter to join a Guard or Reserve unit again.
