The complete Vance Gouge: Living- I suggest the BOQ. Most of the apartments around Enid suck big time. The BOQs are small, but nice. They're furnished and private. Plus, it's very very very very nice to be only a short walk from work in the morning. Especially for those 0500 shows. Restaurants- Applebee's, Chili's, and Lone Star Steakhouse. That's about it. No chow hall on base, so learn how to cook, fast. The bowling alley has some great greasy burgers, but consume in moderation or your resistance training after UPT will consist of trying to secure the velcro straps on your flight suit. Hey Spouses, I have a question about the hospitals available in Columbus for OB/GYN. The majority of girls who've had babies here seem to say, don't have a baby at Baptist Memorial, go to West Point or Amory. I've looked online and Baptist appeared to be the bigger more equipped hospital, and it's definitely closer to base, so my big question is... What exactly are the negatives at Baptist? I would really like specifics since the only times I've heard girls talk about how bad Baptist is, they never say what is so bad about it. Also anyone had their baby at Amory or West Point? Any perceptions on those two hospitals? Thanks, I really appreciate any advice or storie…

There are often new threads that don't need to be started since their information has been covered in the past and needs only to be revived and possibly updated. Here's the ROE on searching and starting new threads. 1. UTFSF: If there is a remote chance that your topic has been discussed, use the search function to find it and re-open that thread. 2. Get something close: It doesn't matter if your specific question was not answered - find a thread that is close and ask your question there. The intent is to consolidate discussion as much as possible so there are a minimal amount of threads discussing the same topic. 3. Disclaimers are unneccesary: You don't need to st…

I'm 20 years old and have 2 years left of college. My soon to be husband is thinking about becoming a pilot. I think that by him being away, i am going to be unhappy and the relationship is going to go sour by not being together like regular married couples. I'm worried that when he is gone all the guys "team up" to go to bars and have a bunch of good looking chicks around because they know they can get away with anything. I think that being away will only distance us, and make me unhappy with the relationship, instead of growing as a couple. i know i will never be able to accept or be happy being "with" someone who is never really "with me." -Out of sight, out of…

I tried searching but I haven't really found much about this. I think the regs are fairly new too (last fall) so maybe it just hasn't been discussed yet. I also put this is the spouse section because it seems like the place for family/housing questions, so if it would be more appropriate somewhere else please go ahead and move it! Anyway, I heard that the AF and Army both introduced some restrictions on what breeds of dogs you're allowed to have if you live on base. So I looked up the latest AFI, here: https://www.e-publish.../AFI32-6001.pdf At the bottom of the first page, it says: Now, I don't know if I really ever want to live on base if I can help i…

Hey everyone, So my boyfriend is in the process of getting to UPT for the Air National Guard. He leaves Feb 2015 to either Columbus(9 hours away) or Vance (5 hours away). My question is if I should go with him. Some back ground, we have been together for 4.5 years. Met in college and then did a long distance relationship for a year while I finished school. I'm a pediatric registered nurse and have a wonderful job (2 yrs experience). I know I could find a job in either place but it just may not be as great as the one I have now, but it is just a year. I'm not a huge fan of long distance relationships but I know it is doable because we have done it before. I know he wil…

Hi, This seems like the best subforum to post this question. I've been scouring the internet both here and on other sites. I've also tried to use DFAS but I'm DoD so it's only giving me DoD answers. When I head out to UPT, my spouse is not going to come with me. Her job pays too well and someone's gotta watch the dogs. I've heard and seen here that I could collect BAH for the location where my spouse is instead of where I'll be. All I have to do is get a BAH waiver. However, I've also read and seen here that this waiver is only available if my PCS is 30 days or less (or some other such excuse). Could someone please clarify this for me? I cannot seem to get a…

Is there any feedback on getting pregnant and haveing a baby while your husband is in training? We'll be ready to have number 2, but don't know if would be too overwhelming. We're going to be in Del Rio starting the beginning of August coming from Germany. We can't wait to get "home".

Looking to hire a CFI in the Columbus AFB area to be the primary instructor responsible for executing a USAF Flight Screening Syllabus. Required to be available Monday through Friday to fly/teach approximately 15 students per year (2 students every 8 weeks). Each student requires 25 flight hours and 40 hours of ground academics. You work with students to determine which days/time you do the lessons....very flexible schedule!! CFI would get approx 375 flight hours, would keep all ground instruction money, and all flight instruction money (minus $6-9 to cover insurance premiums). Opportunities exist to pick up some of the flight schools weekend PPL students and cond…

My husband was recently hired to an ANG unit and I will be moving with him for UPT/B-Course etc. We aren't sure what location we are headed to yet as he doesn't have orders (and will probably be receiving them later rather than sooner) so I am trying to cover all my bases on employment opportunities. I am an A&P with military aviation experience (not Air Force) and would like to get on a contract for the trainers. I've heard that L-3 and M1 conduct all of the maintenance at the various UPT locations but would like to see if anyone here has additional information about these jobs and who is the best POC. I'd like to talk to someone over the phone rather than go through…

I am wondering if anyone can share some insight into how squadron spouse groups function (or if there are any) in the rest of the AF outside of the fighter world. My husband was casual with an F-16 squadron, did UPT, got 38s, IFF and was assigned F-16s, so that's my only experience with spouses groups(other than the OSC). He is transitioning to another aircraft, possibly C-17s, and I was just wondering what to expect. Are there monthly gatherings, First Fridays, or things like that? Or is there not really a squadron spouse group and most normally join the base OSC? Thanks in advance for your insight- it'll be a change, but I'm excited for it!

My girlfriend and I are both going to be going to UPT (6 months staggered) and we're also planning on getting married.. I've heard plenty of advice against it, but it's going to happen. That being said, has anyone even heard of a successful pilot-pilot marriage? What are the factors that would affect us (air frame selection, deployments, etc)? Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

My fiance and I are having a big wedding on June 15, 2013. We have been planning since last summer when he proposed. Today, we found that his EAD is May 28, 2013. I'm not sure what to do or what all it means. He got Laughlin so it's not too far away, we are from Oklahoma. Does he go to IFS right after his EAD or is there downtime? Do we need to get married before he EADs? I would really appreciate any advice or knowledge. Thanks!

Has anyone ever been in a position whereas their spouse started out as a foreign national (such as without a green card or US naturalization)? What do I need to do first if we are to get hitched? I'm a newly commissioned LT about to EAD in two months. I punched this question off to my Det NCOIC but he needed to research a bit and ask some questions off to others as well. I basically have no idea where to start and would like to look for some additional experiences. The marriage paperwork I understand is straight forward, but everything else, such as the security clearance (I have a current TS) and the fact that she is not a US citizen, is unknown territory for me.…

Hello! I am just wanting some "what to expect" information for what it is like to be a Air Force Pilot Wife. My boyfriend (of 5 years) was selected to attend the Air Force's Pilot school. This is WONDERFUL and I could not be more proud of him! We are both civilians, although his brother is a loadmaster in the Air Force. I know the Officer-vs-Enlisted lifestyles is very different. My s/o wants to be a Fighter Pilot, but of course I know that it all depends on his placement in his class and all of that. So any information about that is great! Although he is graduating college in May and entering the DEP program. I do not graduate until next May. I am 22 year…

My boyfriend has just started on the flightline for the T-1. He'd been previously training with the Navy so we are expierencing the AF way of training for the first time. I am geographically seperated from him to begin with. Is it normal for phone calls to decrease greatly now that he's hit the flightline in AF training? My pilot friends tell me this is normal...help! What are realistic expectations I should have of him?? :(

I will be married by the time I start my UPT and my fiancee is deadset on being able to work while I'm in UPT and afterwards. She believes that is the only way she will find fulfillment is simply working and doing something jobwise. Any advice or help from any other wives out there would be great! Does she have to work? Where can she work? We realize that training is short and she is not expecting anything grand in those couple years, but she needs something to occupy her time. Supporting me is not enough for her...someone please help!

Considering applying to my home guard unit to which I feel like I have a high likelihood or being hired based off previous conversations provided I don’t totally tube the AFOQT & TBAS. I’ll require an age waiver as I’ll be turning 33 in the fall when the board will most likely happen. I’ve been holding off my PPL as my Wife a I have been discussing this. She is an RN and loves the floor she works on which took her many years to get hired on to so she isn’t real keen on the idea of quitting. She can go to an ultra part time status and travel to see me while in training every couple months. The tough part is we have a 3.5 year old son and leaving that …

Hello, all. I wasn't sure what Discussion Group this fell best into, but this one seemed to have more family-specific questions. Barring any unforeseen issues, I'll be heading to Kelly for PIQ here in a few months and I'm looking to bring my family with me. I was wondering if you folks might have some pointers on helping to make that happen. I gather they won't put any family provisions on my orders for a TDY, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about it all since they are coming with me. As of now, I'll likely have to have a TDY en route or TDY from UPT because I've got a tight turn between UPT graduation and my first day of PIQ class. There likely won'…

I'm an AFROTC cadet graduating next may (05) and then will be heading to UPT. My girlfriend and I have been talking a lot about when is a good time for us to get hitched, and i was really curious as to how 'newly wed' life would be getting married right after commissioning and then heading to UPT. For those of you who have been through it, is it pretty hard on the spouse having your husband gone all day and then preoccupied with flying for the rest of it? If we held off for awhile can you live on base with someone without being married? Is getting married right before UPT a particularly bad time? I would really appreciate any insight you might have on the subject. Than…

Hi all! I'm new on here. My husband is a pilot applicant and is considering going into the USAF Reserves or Guard this year. We're both trying to figure this decision out as this wasn't something we were expecting until the past year. I've seen other posts that ask about other people's experiences and I was wondering if there are any folks who are completely outside the military and have gone through this process with their spouse? Military lifestyle is pretty new to me so I wanted to hear from others who have been in a similar position. At this point, I'm not fully comfortable with this change for us. (Some background: we're both in our early 30s and might be considering…
