Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. I'm hearing ARC fighter units are being told their 900 days of seasoning orders for new guys are getting cut to something low like 140 days now. Any insight out there into how official this is or likely to stick around?

I am trying to find out if a 35-year-old 2Lt transferring from the Army National Guard to the Air Guard needs to obtain an age waiver? I was told that the Air Force/Air Guard re-commissions you even if you are transferring with the same rank, in this case a 2Lt. I am also wondering what the governing NGB reg. is. Thanks Stephen

Hello everyone Couldn't find an answer to this exact question so I’ll throw it out there. Is it possible for a pilot who is a commissioned officer in the army guard to apply for an air guard UPT slot and get selected before the service commitment is over (less than 5 years commissioned service to enter UPT). Thanks in advance!

  4. Background: New pilot (warrant) at a new Army guard unit I’ve been told that if you get picked up by an ANG unit, your remaining Active Duty Service Obligation isn’t a factor, because you’re going from Guard to Guard, even if you are transferring states. This seems logical, but couldn’t find an exact answer to this in DOD 1205.05, 1300.04, or 1304.25. Anyone have experience? If anyone else has been in a similar situation, when do you show your interest or intentions to your current unit? I’d think you’d want to keep it close to your chest until you get picked up, otherwise you’re burning bridges on a gamble.

I'm looking for some info on possibly joining a local ANG wing. I've got 11 1/2 years in the Army National Guard. I'm currently a 2LT (I was a CW2 and I Direct Commissioned last year) qualified in the UH-60 A/L/M as well as the C-12V. I've done one deployment in the C-12 and have about 540 hrs FW and another 525 RW. I'm a PC/AMC in the UH-60. I've been an Army technician for about 7 1/2 years. For the last 4 years I've been working a tech job that isn't flying as a GS-11, eventually hoping to move to a GS-12 or 13 flying position. Over the past 2 years I've applied for several jobs both AGR and Tech to move on from my current position. Although I've been told I…

First off, I want to say thanks to everyone whom has contributed to this forum. Awesome resource. Second, hoping for a little help/guidance. Background: Currently a CW2 in the ARNG with 800 hours in the UH-60, (PC/AMC) looking to make the transfer to AF Reserves/ANG. I want to stay Rotary Wing; on my last deployment I did some MEDEVAC chase stuff, really enjoyed the mission. Right now I work as a Faculty Research Engineer in Ga. Have an undergrad in Mech Engineering, grad in Aeronautics, starting PhD in Mech Engineering in 2019 at the University I work for (I can defer if needed). I spoke to a reserve recruiter, basically told me to pound sand. The ANG recruiter told me m…

Hey guys, Lots of info on this, but not exactly what I am looking for... Have a couple of questions on pay and benefits: It seems that ARTs go with the GS scale; is that fixed by my rank or the position itself? What step would I start with? How much pay do most fighter guys get from the reserve side? (Which I understand to be in addition to ART pay.) Flight pay? BAH/BAS? (My research says no, but just checking...) Health Care for the family? Looks like I could purchase for a price. (Should have cared more about Obamacare!) Anything else that I am not considering? Thanks in advance for the help/advice! Crate

How much flexibility does a unit have in changing the status of a position, specifically ART to AGR? Is that something that's easy enough IF the Wing leadership supports it, or a NAF/MAJCOM type approval? I fully understand there's different pots of money, and different manpower authorizations involved, but I'm not plugged into the nuances of the A1 world enough to know how easy/hard that is.

  9. Hey guys, I've been working with my local AFRC officer ascession recruiter for the past year. At first she ignored my voicemails and e-mails for a few months before I finally just showed up at her office unannounced. She admitted she was impressed with my determination and immediately warmed up to me over the next couple weeks to get paperwork going, scheduling MEPS, and calling around units who may need pilots. I told her I was interviewing at a unit in the near future and she wished me good luck and last time we spoke we were on good terms. I ended up getting selected by the unit and they are going to sponsor me for the November AFRC board! Good news right? Well, since …

Does anyone have a comment on the relative attitudes of the Reserve guys vs the Guard guys? I'm specifically talking about heavy units. I wondered if the Reserve guys were more locked on than the guard guys. Do they know how to have a good time? Thanks-

Hey all, was doing some research on guard units here in AZ and in trying to cast a wide net, I shot resumes over to the 161ARW and the 162d Wing. Going through the 162d wing site I saw they operate RC-26s under the 214th group in addition to F-16s but cannot find any info other than that. I would really like to shoot an application over to RC-26s on top of the 16s as it seems like an interesting mission and is close to home. Does anybody have any contact info or possibly any leads on if they hire for UPT slots? I have a feeling that they might not even operate the RC-26 anymore but can't find info on that either. Thanks in advance for the help guys!

Filed under the list of shit I knew a month ago...Don’t show up to your Reserve unit the day after your separation date. It doesn’t matter and everything will be messed up. That being said, can anyone help with a pay question on UTA lodging? My DOS was 1 Aug and I reported to my unit on 2 Aug. They gave me 4 UTA periods and 15 AT days to build up some time (I’m a TR). I want to do the 4 UTA blocks First so they cover my hotel the night before and then the AT days on the back half somit covers my travel home. The problem is I am not in any system so the lodging for my UTA days is just on my GTC instead of booked through the UTA office. My question is how can I…

When on Title 32 AGR orders for over 30 days, is your BAH based on your unit's zip code? Or on your residence zip code? Or something else?

Quick question guys, This may have been answered on here somewhere but I havent been able to find any information. I was hired on as a Nav Oct 2012, finally got some dates, headed to AMS in March, IFS in May, and Pensacola in July. My question is this. I am married with two kids, due to the rigorous schedule down in Pensacola I have decided to go down there alone to just get done without the stress of family. I have heard she would barely see me and I dont need her getting upset if I cant give her time while I need to be studying. So her and the kids will be staying here. Will I get BAH to help pay for my home here in MIssouri? I have heard that typically this is the …

I have some big questions about things I should do before leaving for the UPT training pipe as a reservist. I’m prior service, single no dependents. The big one is how BAH works at OTS and UPT for reservists. If I sign a lease now, will it be paid while I’m away and I’ll also receive on base housing? In my prior service as a reserves guy I remember people getting something like this I think.

Hey everyone, I'm going to enlist in a fighter unit and wanted to know if there was such thing as a "best" job in regards to getting the most face time with the pilots. I've really only heard crew chief or avionics. Would it hurt someone if they enlisted and did the planning and scheduling? Want to make sure I'm getting the best job to increase my chances. Thank you!

  18. I am considering joining the Air National Guard as an E3. I read somewhere that "If you have dependents, an apartment or mortgage before enlisting you will receive base housing allowance pay." I have a mortgage with no dependents and I'm single. Is this correct and would this apply for guard units while being months in BMT and tech school? I live in a US territory would that be considered OHA? Found this calculator but not sure if it applies to me. If so, would I be entitled to the max "OHA Rental Allowance"? What about "Utility/Recurring Maintenance Allowance"?

Just found out that my unit might be one of the possible victims of the 2013 budget cuts. There have been many rumors spreading around our unit that they will be shutting us down, however nothing is certain until the presidents budget is set in a few months. I have been working my tail off as a crew chief in my unit for the last three years while getting my packet together and taking all the neccessary measure to have a competitive package. Finally, I get the board date, at the same time find out that what I have worked for for the last three years may be shot down if our unit gets closed. Don't get me wrong I will be applying to many different units and already have pack…

Long time lurker on the forums getting ready to separate from AD and applying for airline jobs. The family has made the decision to settle down in Colorado Springs and I'm trying to find a part time reserve/guard gig in Colorado, preferably the Springs but I could commute to Buckley. I'm a mobility pilot, so I'm assuming I would need to find a rated position? I am planning on applying for PC, about 4 months off of my PCS ADSC so a CAT E billet wouldn't work until I paid back my 3 for 1. I'm constantly looking at reserve vacancies on AMS but it sounds like there are a ton of opportunities out there that aren't always posted. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have a…

ARC legacy 130 units are being required to send instructors for all crew positions to Afghanistan for a minimum of 6 months. Given the fact that most IPs in the ARC have fulfilled their pilot training commitment or can retire, what impact has this had on units that are dealing with this? After reviewing the merits of this deployment, one could easily call it a bad deal. Couple that with an optimistic airline employment outlook, you now have a potential readiness issue due to IPs retiring or leaving in larger than expected numbers. Any thoughts?

Hey guys, I’m an H model Co trying to close out my hours for AC upgrade, I’m very interested in going on a deployment with another H model unit. It’s been challenging finding info on this stuff, and I’m sure everyone is “fat on co-pilots”, but with the H sunsetting I really feel like I have to hit this hard to get it done. If someone could send me even a state and a time-frame I can do the rest of the lifting from there. It’s a small community so if you reach out we probably even know each other haha Thanks
