Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by HFF,

Hey everyone, I'm a 2nd year college student (may be graduating early) and an Instrument rated Private Pilot. I'm interested in a career as a pilot in the ANG/AFRES after I graduate and I'm wondering what the best way is to go about visitng a unit that you have no contacts in. The only contact I've made thus far was from shaking hands with an ANG pilot at an airshow, who ended up giving me his business card when I told him I was interested in a career with the Guard. I maintained contact with him and was able to visit that unit and had an excellent experience. I ended up really liking all of the pilots I met and plan on returning during a drill weekend. However the on…

  2. Searched around for while and couldn't find a straight answer. I have always assumed than any ANG or AFres unit that held the mission of Aggressor or Training would not hold any UPT boards. That is to say; they would not take on a new guy, and instead look mostly for pilots currently rated and experienced in the unit's air-frame, possibly even only instructor rated pilots. Is this true? There are a lot of units like that and I wanted to know if I should consider these viable candidates to apply for or not. For example, the 149th FW is a Texas ANG unit that flies F-16s but has the mission of training and qualifying F-16 Pilots.

  3. I’m currently enlisted in the ANG. I Have all my tests done, bachelors degree, ready to apply to guard units. I’m currently in contact with a reserve recruiter for an unsponsored board. My question is, can I get hired unsponsored, and in the time frame of waiting to go to OTS, interview and get hired by a Gaurd Unit and take the Gaurd route instead? My basis for this is I’m 26 years old and I want to get the ball rolling on getting into UPT. I really want fighters and plan on sending my package to both Wisconsin and Minnesota or whatever unit has a hiring board in the next few months. Should I wait to go unsponsored until I hear back from these units or other Gaurd un…

I'm coming off invol mob Title X orders soon and I'm being told that I won't be able to make up any of my UTA's from this past year after August 15th. They also tell me I might not be able to make up my UTA's that I missed while mobilized. Does this sound kosher?

  5. I was recently hired back into the guard, had a 4 year break in service but decided to get back in to finish out my time since I had 10 years on active duty. I have not sworn in yet, in the process of getting back in. I let my civilian employer know that I would be returning to the guard part time (4 days a month) and now they posted my job online trying to fill immediately. I have not been let go, yet.. Since I am not in the guard yet do I have any protection against being fired? Here is an excerpt from USERRA, which covers future service (note 3): USERRA is a federal law intended to ensure that persons who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, Reserves, National …

If you get invited for an interview is it really necessary to bring a bottle for the bar? How do you present it to them when you’re with a group of other interviewees in a way thats not awkward? maybe I’m overthinking this haha

Anyone have any info about the C-5 squadron in San Antonio? Looking for hiring info for a rated-type guy who is not qualed on FRED.

  8. Hey guys, I was a guard dude with a viper slot and now I’m just a guard dude with wings. I got a lot of things to figure out but I wanted to jump on this forum and see if anyone out there has insight on the process from here. I was told to go find a new unit but anyone that knows anything about securing a good job in the guard will tell you it’s not that easy. One of my biggest questions; how do I go from ANG to AFRC? I know what you’re thinking, “don’t do it!” But my situation paired with my desire for a particular part of the country is driving that move. Has anyone here done it? All I’ve heard is “it’s hard to do” and the “AFRC is a shitty deal” can anyone …

Thinking about switching my airline career to aerial firefighting down the road. Are there any guard/reserve squadrons that participate in aerial firefighting? I have my radar on the C130 squadron in Reno, NV, but no clue if they do that type of flying. They are in close proximity of NorCal though.

I'll be heading to IFT in a few months out in Pueblo, CO. I have heard more than one person refer to it as "DOSSchwitz." I have been told that when it was first started it was very rigorous and was a huge "weed out" program, but I've heard others say that this is not true and in more recent years the attitude there has changed slightly and their washout rate has decreased significantly. Has anyone gotten through the training in the last year-ish? How did you feel it prepared you at UPT compared to your classmates who did not attend IFT? Whats the lifestyle like there? 10-12hour academics mon-fri, then eat/workout/study in the evening? Is that it? Or is there oth…

Anybody know of any AFRC fighter units that are currently looking for UPT candidates?

  14. Started by BUSTED,

Upfront: I'm an idiot for not noticing this sooner. Question 1: Should I have received Aviation Career Incentive Pay ("Flight Pay") for both IDT (UTA/AFTP) and AT Days? (Or is it just for AT days?) Question 2: what's the best way to go about getting back pay for Flight Pay from a Unit that I've since left? (I'm still in AFRC, just another unit) Background: I left AD and joined the Reserves in January 2014. Since that point, I've done all of my UTA's and AFTP's, as well as AT days; but it has always been in strings of 2-5 days at a time. I've never done a continuous order. Which means that my pay has always trickled in as relatively small deposits (so, I've never received…

Here is some information up front: - This is not for UPT applicants. - We are looking to hire 1-2 current / qualified F-16 pilots. We would consider a TX course for fighter drivers from other platforms or if non-current. - This is for a traditional Guardsman position within the unit. There have historically been good full-time opportunities for pilots joining the unit, but it is not guaranteed. - We have a 50 mile rule. You must reside within 50 miles of Tulsa IAP. - We fly Block 42, MMC 5.2+ jets with -229's. - If interested, please PM me with your contact info.

Besides the ANG being a (primarily) state group and the AFRC being a federal group, what are the day-to-day differences between the two? I'm going through the interview process and have some stuff coming up with both. I understand that the ANG unit hires you and you go through the NGB whereas the AFRC sponsors you and then you go to a board sometime during the year. Also, AMS for ANG and (recently) all OTS for the AFRC. After the hiring process, everything I've read shows them to be similar as far as UPT, SERE and then seasoning at your unit. What other differences have you found? In the thread talking about the (rumors of) AFRC absorbing the ANG I read that the…

Long time lurker here that finally decided to drop a post. I'm finishing up school at UT and hoping to get a Guard slot with the 136th AW. This question goes out to everyone though since I plan on applying to fighters and possibly tankers as well if I can't get a Herk slot. Do ANG guys match up with AD guys in proficiency and general combat readiness? The reason I ask is that if I'm going to be flying around getting shot at, I'd prefer to be as prepared as possible. Thus, if AD guys are typically more prepared, I think I'd prefer to go AD. It seems to me that it would be especially difficult in a guard fighter unit to maintain proficiency, but I guess as long …

Hey guys, I'm looking for advice on how to prep for UPT. All I'm doing right now is working out and maintaining currency with my PPL. In your opinions would working on an instrument rating right now be worth the money? I'm excited to start this new phase in life and look forward to hearing your do's and don'ts. Cheers

  19. Hello everyone! I have a question! Is it possible to receive a sponsorship for UPT from a training reserve unit? Such as 43rd FS at tyndall afb who primary mission is to train f-22 pilots, or the 69th fighter squadron out of Arizona that trains f-16 pilots? or can you only get sponsored by units who don't train such as homestead, NAS Dallas, or Utah? I am desperately trying to find a fighter squadron to sponsor me for the up coming board! I have contacted a couple so far! Luckily for me, I am prior service f16 crew chief, and have some great credentials, and also going next month to wright Patterson AFB to receive my flight physical! (got selected as alternate for my unit…

  20. Has anyone done the Guard Recruiting Assistance Program? I've got a friend who is looking into the Guard, and I'd like to do G-RAP if it means that I can buy now buy an AR-15. Is there some big catch or trap? I understand that you have to do some CBTs (as if I don't do a million of them already) and go to a meeting with the recruiter and the recruit. Thanks!

I'm currently 98 days out from graduation from the zoo (who's counting) and I want to go to the guard. I've got a pilot slot already, and we're all finding out bases tomorrow. I read the AFI that says Academy dudes have to serve their ADSC before being eligible for the guard, but I was thinking Uncle Sam is a little fat around the waist with officers and maybe there's a chance here. Looking for a Viper slot out of Buckley in Denver. I do know very important people in the Colorado guard right now, not sure if that counts for a damn thing...Anyway, thoughts?

Dudes/Dudettes, I don't know where else to turn but I'm running out of steam for this whole process. Life is getting me down. It's been my dream to fly fighters since I was a kid but there were a lot of hiccups on the way there, but I'm still not even at the finish line. I haven't landed any fighter interviews yet and I've broadened my horizons to AD to try my hand there. But I missed this board because my recruiter wouldn't talk to me or would take too long to respond. Below are my stats: AFOQT: P99 N89 AA33 V35 Q31 PCSM: 99 GPA: 3.07 (English) Flight Hours: 23 (Solo) The kicker is, I'm 31. I was so stoked to see the age limit be rais…

I went back through 10+ pages of archives here to see if there was a thread I could bring back from the dead. I couldn't find one so I'll make a new one. I just recently transferred from the ANG to an AFRC IMA job. This post and thread will be a place holder for more information when I have more time to sit down and write a novel of my experience with this process. Like anything military personnel/administrative related, it was a nightmare... so far. Hopefully it'll all be worth it. I've got my 20+ years already, but decided I didn't want to fly anymore or do the UTA thing anymore and didn't quite think it was a good idea to retire yet so I decided to try the IM…

Question for the masses: I'm an AD KC-135 guy and just got picked up for March as my 2nd assignment. Just wanted to get a feel for what to expect and see if anyone is out there or has experience there. I realize that its an associate unit and that can somewhat hurt career progress. If anyone has general info on the base, community, QOL, and places to live, it would be much appreciated. I'm a married guy w/no kids...wife will be looking to go to Loma Linda for school while we are there. Thanks! Goblin

I'm about to enlist in the Air National Guard and the only cyber jobs available at my base are Client Systems (3D1X1), Cyber Systems Operations (3D0X2), and Cyber Transport Systems (3D1X2). Then there's RF Transmissions Systems (3D1X3), and Spectrum Operations (3D1X4). These last two have a $10,000 signing bonus. I have a BS in Computer Science and have been working in IT for over 14 years. The past 8 have been in software developing. The signing bonus sounds very enticing, but I know nothing about radios, so that would leave Spectrum Operations as a maybe. I'm older and afraid of heights so don't want to be climbing radio towers. The othe…
