Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

I'm currently 98 days out from graduation from the zoo (who's counting) and I want to go to the guard. I've got a pilot slot already, and we're all finding out bases tomorrow. I read the AFI that says Academy dudes have to serve their ADSC before being eligible for the guard, but I was thinking Uncle Sam is a little fat around the waist with officers and maybe there's a chance here. Looking for a Viper slot out of Buckley in Denver. I do know very important people in the Colorado guard right now, not sure if that counts for a damn thing...Anyway, thoughts?

I'll be PCSing with family in tow to Laughlin in March. I was wondering, in the reserves, do you get the 10 days to house hunt/move in, etc like you do active duty? Do you need to request that time or do they tack that time onto the front of the orders automatically for a PCS? My plan was to take the alloted 4 days to drive out there and then hopefully use the 10 days to get into our base housing/receive our shipped goods prior to UPT start.

Quick question guys, This may have been answered on here somewhere but I havent been able to find any information. I was hired on as a Nav Oct 2012, finally got some dates, headed to AMS in March, IFS in May, and Pensacola in July. My question is this. I am married with two kids, due to the rigorous schedule down in Pensacola I have decided to go down there alone to just get done without the stress of family. I have heard she would barely see me and I dont need her getting upset if I cant give her time while I need to be studying. So her and the kids will be staying here. Will I get BAH to help pay for my home here in MIssouri? I have heard that typically this is the …

  5. So I am trying to get my package done for the NOV UFT board, which is due 2 Nov. I am currently a reservist and all I need to finish the submission is a commissioning physical. This physical is sufficient to apply to the board, as long as a wright patt fc-1 is scheduled (doesnt have to be complete) I completed my PEPP and the reserve medical squadron told me it will be 45-60 days to get it processed..so I went to the active duty hospital and managed to get a commissioning physical scheduled next week. My question would be will this physical be sufficient for the board? The hospital where I went is where the recruiter sends civilian applicants (if not meps).. The reason…

Florida ANG fighter wing has an alert detachment in homestead florida. Anyone here know how the alert detachment thing works? There are several other units that I am considering that have them...most of the time they seem to be in the better of the two locations. Do newbie pilots generally stay with the main base or what? Anyone from Florida who can help me out? Homestead is so close to Miami and man that sounds nice... Thanks!

Hi, For example, HIANG has three squadrons under its one 154th Wing. Let's say you get picked up by the unit and they give you a C-17 slot and you go to UPT and return to fly the C-17. The question: Is it relatively easy to transfer over to a different squadron after a few years in say the C-17 if you wanted to then fly the F-22 or KC-135 for whatever reason? I understand the process of transferring different ANG units, but am confused on the protocol of changing airframes within the same unit. Thanks

  10. I'm not sure if this belongs here but I didn't want to flood the "What Are My Chances" forum with this since my AFOQT isn't until September, and I'm not even done with school. Anyway, I've managed to make this life-goal of mine about as difficult as it can get through a combination of delays, procrastination, and despondency. I've mostly made up for all of that, and I'm about 90% of the way there now, but I fear I may end up being too late in the end. Like the title says, I'm feeling pretty discouraged and really just hoping to hear some words of wisdom from someone more experienced. I've been working hard to get my PPL and finish college the last few months. I'…

So either I’m taking crazy pills this morning or AROWS is different. Looks like there’s no more inactive duty authorizations, just certifications. When you go into certifications instead of picking from a list of approved authorizations, you create a new duty type and proceed from there. Anyone seen any guidance on the change? Seems like a positive development in that you don’t have to route paperwork twice for the same period of duty, although now do you basically have to work the days on verbal orders before finding out if the paperwork in the system is approved? There is also a new Duty Summary page that is a nice backup to the excel sheet I currently us…

Does anyone have any updated info on this? About a year ago I started hearing about a plan to introduce more AGR positions in Reserve squadrons. From what I heard the majority of full timers would still be ARTs but there would be a few AGRs sprinkled in.

  13. Curious if anyone will be willing to share their schedules on a month to month basis. Obviously, dual flying jobs are very demanding. Are you working 25 days/month? Are you gone for most of the month? How do you balance your family/social life? etc.. Appreciate the inputs!

I've done some poking around in regards to this question of "Having an engineering career while flying?". I've gathered that it's airframe and location dependent but I was wondering if anyone is currently doing this that I might be able to connect with? I would be most interested in heavys (C17, KC135, C130, etc). Thanks.

Hello all, I searched through the threads but couldn’t find any recent information. Now that I received TFOT dates, I’m trying to give my current employer an estimated timeline of my absence. Can anyone give recent info on how long seasoning is based on experience or through the grapevine? Thanks in advance!

Well, I've heard about the feast / famine nature of the Reserves and with the recent hiring freeze of the TDART program, full time employment might be a little harder to find for younger reserve guys like myself for a little bit. I am still cautiously optimistic about getting some type of stable full time employment with my sqn, and would strongly like to do so if able, it seems like a great way to get plugged in to how it all works etc. If required I'll either take my shot at making a living troughing (bumming), or go get an RJ job once eligible for stable income and to keep stacking the flight hours, but for a variety of reasons I want to focus on just learning the airf…

a little off topic question, but I've been watching some thunderbird airshows on YouTube and it got me thinking.. I believe airshow teams like the blues and tbirds are active duty only, but do the tbirds hire fighter pilots from the reserves or ANG? I did a search and according to google in the past I believe there has been only 3 ANG fighter pilots that have been selected. here's the twist. even though they were current enlisted in the guard, they all came from an AD AF background. ultimately my question is, can you still get picked up on the tbirds without any AD service? TIA, wikz.

  19. Started by Rated Flyer 4 Life,

My current unit is starting to be a tough situation for my family life and civilian job. My commander has given me the option to either stay or go. If I do leave, he said they will help me find a new flying unit. As a reservist, what happens in the meantime during the process of looking for a new unit? Does the old unit usually keep you on a TR status? Can I switch airframes or do most units prefer you stick with the same MDS?

  20. Started by ecc97,

I've seen some similar topics, but want to run by specific situation but all of you. I've been trying to get hired by an ANG fighter unit for going on 5 years. ~18 rushes and ~50 apps later, I've come up with nothing. I'm of the mindset of fighters or bust (I know, I know), and as such, have started the process to enlist in one of my dream units. Now, the paperwork has already started, so the die is cast on some level, but I guess I want to know if I just shot myself in the foot? Hi Guys, I was recently accepted to AD OTS with a pilot slot and a class date of mid 2007. However, after talking to another OTS guy about flying in the ANG, I am leaning in that direction :D . My question is, can I drop an AD UPT slot and then accept an ANG UPT slot? I remember reading something about not ever being able to attend UPT if you had declined a slot in the past. Also, if I go AD, how long is it before I can switch to an ANG unit? Do I need to fulfill the 10 yr commitment first? Thanks. Robert

This post is for my roommate who wants to get some information on becoming an Air National Guard helo pilot. I was telling him all about my path on applying to every Fighter unit out there for the guard and he loves the idea of staying with a unit for the full 20 years, but could he do it as a helo pilot as well? Has anyone been through this route? If so, I would love some input. Is the process the same for helo units? Anyone know of anymore ANG wop-wop units out there besides: 106 RSQ 176 WG 920 RSQ 129 RSQ ??? Thanks
