Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by TheNewGazmo,

I went back through 10+ pages of archives here to see if there was a thread I could bring back from the dead. I couldn't find one so I'll make a new one. I just recently transferred from the ANG to an AFRC IMA job. This post and thread will be a place holder for more information when I have more time to sit down and write a novel of my experience with this process. Like anything military personnel/administrative related, it was a nightmare... so far. Hopefully it'll all be worth it. I've got my 20+ years already, but decided I didn't want to fly anymore or do the UTA thing anymore and didn't quite think it was a good idea to retire yet so I decided to try the IM…

This article details the USAF's recent decision to give the 127th 12 KC-46's. What are your thoughts on the 107th losing their fighter mission once the A-10 is divested. It seems like a Michigan based fighter mission has been on the chopping block for several decades now. https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2024/01/12/selfridge-air-national-guard-base-picked-to-host-kc-46-squadron/

  4. Does anyone know of anyone who flew cargo/special ops/tanker aircraft active duty and then palace chase / palace front to a fighter unit with the the guard or reserve? I’ve seen on bogidope that most of the units specify on the hiring memo that they are only accepting people who flew in that specific airframe for example. But I’ve heard that it’s very rare but possible for people to switch from active duty heavy to active duty fighter and slightly less rare and possible for people to switch from active duty heavy to guard/reserve fighter. Curious if anyone knows someone who did that and how they did that. Couldn’t find anything about this in any other forums.

I just did my first PME course since the switchover to ASU happened about a year ago. Anybody have experience with points posting to PCARS with ASU yet? Do the points show up with each course you do (ie no changes)? If the points don’t show up, what proof do you have to give the PCARS people since AUSIS is now shut out of the process?

  6. Will be visiting a fighter squadron during a drill weekend and am invited to a social event/roll call after work. Have read a lot of forums on here with the advice, 1. Don't be a douche, 2. Don't talk about yourself unless asked, 3. Bring a nice bottle of booze as a token of appreciation, 4. Be a cool dude(tte) Beyond that, any other specific DOs and DONTs you could give a novice for roll call and for the visit in general? Thanks in advance. -DD

Hey guys, I’m an H model Co trying to close out my hours for AC upgrade, I’m very interested in going on a deployment with another H model unit. It’s been challenging finding info on this stuff, and I’m sure everyone is “fat on co-pilots”, but with the H sunsetting I really feel like I have to hit this hard to get it done. If someone could send me even a state and a time-frame I can do the rest of the lifting from there. It’s a small community so if you reach out we probably even know each other haha Thanks

Hey everyone, I'm a newly minted civilian thanks to the RIF and I had a question about the lifestyle of the ANG C-130 units out there. Obviously it varies by unit, but my understanding is that the reserve units deploy 6 on 6 off. Having just come off AD I have spent, what I feel, is plenty of time in the middle east. Thus I'm not really looking to go back to a 1:1 dwell. Are the ANG units doing this sort of thing? I don't mind going to the sandpit, I just don't want to live there. So what are the trips like, and how long are the activations (on average)? Thanks!

  11. I’ve searched the threads, but can’t find quite what I’m looking for. My question is, what’s it like to live about nine hours or more from your unit? I got hired at a unit in one state, but have a great civilian career opportunity in another state. Also, the unit does allow out of state commuters. Serving the unit comes first and that’s the priority, but I’d like to have a loose idea of a “plan” for the coming civilian side of my life in the upcoming years after training. For those of you who have a far commute to the unit, or have knowledge of others who do, what’s it like? I’m talking about in the ways of weather, stress, work/life balance, finances. Is it not…

Hey all, I've heard that in previous years it was possible for off the street guys with no unit association to get an FC1 done on their own dime. Would any of you guys know if this is still possible? Apologies if this question has been asked previously, could not find any recent information on it. Thanks in advance!

I know we’ve all read and heard that there are some instances where a guard/reserve fighter select that’s not doing too hot will swap with a heavy select during UPT. Just curious if anyone knows about how often that happens. I’ve heard washout rate for fighter selects is pretty high. Thanks in advance for any info!

  14. I've seen different units advertise different maximums for TFCS--some say no more than 5 years and some say no more than 8 years. Does anyone know if there is one correct answer and what publication I could find it in? On a similar note, if anyone has ever successfully had a TFCS waiver approved, I would be grateful if someone could DM me the template. TIA

  15. Due to a lot of misinformation from Regular Retirees and ARPC not being clear on Reserve Retirement rules and having run into more than a couple reservists telling me they stayed in the SELRES/ANG for 24 years in order to "max the pay chart" for retirement, and I think, obviously the ARC enjoying that people do not understand and therefore serve additional years unnecessarily, I am compelled to write this and wish it to become common knowledge for anyone seeking a reserve retirement. The only stipulation to carry O-5 into retirement is serving on the Reserve Active Status List for 3 years Time in Grade. Now it is unclear that if those 3 years are only years on the RA…

Do full time pilots in the guard/reserve fly more than AD? I was talking to an Apache pilot in the Army Guard and was blown away at how much he flew a week.

  17. Live in SoCal (prefer San Diego), TR/DSG or fresh off AD and ready for a change of pace? Better family/work balance (no deployments)? More flexibility (and less/little AF pay but full USERRA protections/mil leave)? Must be a Major or Lt Col with 3+ish years left. Interested in working with/mentoring motivated youths? Must be self motivated and able to work independently (it’s a beautiful thing once you get it). I attached an old handbook that might answer some questions, but DM or post them if you got them. 18. I'm a former USAF active duty O-3 considering a slot in my state's Army National Guard unit. I separated at four years, with another four on my DD-214 for my MSO in the IRR. Can someone elaborate on the process to be pulled out of USAF IRR and placed in the Army Guard? Is it similar to the process that would occur if I decided to join an Air Reserve or Air Guard unit?

I am trying to get a Guard Pilot Slot with a C-130 unit. My wife and I are trying to find what the typical pay is for a student at UPT. Also, how much can a 130 guy get after UPT just being a Guard Bum. just trying to get info. Jason

  20. I will be joining a heavy squadron where nearly everyone is an airline pilot. I don't really want to be away from home constantly, so i am weighing pursing a work from home job in the corporate world. Does anyone have experience on how you are able to make this work? I know USERRA protects you in most cases but potentially being gone on longer trips frequently could make it difficult for everyone involved, especially because most civilians don't understand how the guard/reserves work. Another challenge is that I am separating from AD and going reserves, should i wait to find a job until after I get back from UPT? I cant imagine any employer will entertain the idea o…

  21. So, I'm 17 and am a senior in high school. My goal is to be a pilot in the reserves or ANG and, after doing some extensive research and talking to many recruiters, I've developed A semi cohesive road map on achieving that goal. My plan is to enlist in the AD Air Force a few months after graduation. I'm hoping to enlist for 6 years as to give me so extra cushion time as well as a better starting pay. I'll probably go into some sort of maintenance AFSC although I scored pretty well on the ASVAB so I should be qualified for everything. During my time in the AD Air Force, I Plan on using the benefits such as TA as well as many benefits online military colleges give, to get my…

  22. I am currently in the process of rushing units, and have submitted an application to the active duty rated board. It may seem like I am getting a little ahead of myself with this post, but I am thinking about what goals I would like to achieve if I can be hired to fly for a guard unit. I have an interest in going back for an Aeronautical Engineering degree in order to qualify for Air Force Test Pilot School eventually one day. I didn't rediscover my passion and enthusiasm for aviation until I was into my final year of college. Is this possible to apply for USAFTPS if you are a Guard pilot with all of the educational qualifications? Or is only available to AD pilot…

If you get invited for an interview is it really necessary to bring a bottle for the bar? How do you present it to them when you’re with a group of other interviewees in a way thats not awkward? maybe I’m overthinking this haha

  24. Hello to all. First off thanks to all of those on here who share a plethora of helpful information, it's truly helpful to someone on the outside of this community looking for a way into it. Before I ask this question, I have used the search function, google, and a bunch of other resources and still can't find this answer.... Is it possible for someone to become an RPA pilot in the ANG/AFR and then apply to an ANG/AFR unit in hopes of getting a pilot slot after serving time in an RPA unit? (I believe from this forum the minimum is 2.5 year commitment). I can't find any info what so ever so any helpful answers are sincerely appreciated. -RANDOMDUDE

Hey all, Attached is a snipping tool of the AFMAN 36-2100 talking about age and TFCS eligibility requirements. I just want to confirm that the way the AFMAN reads, for Guard units as long as you are younger than 33 when the individual unit announces their hiring results you will not need an age ETP? Got hired by a Guard fighter unit a few months ago and wanted to confirm the age requirements. Thanks.
