Can ANG/Reserve pilots go to Test Pilot School? How is it viewed from a squadrons perspective? When is the best time to do it? Know anyone that has done it?

This may sound a bit out of the box/left field. Hypothetically speaking, would it be conceivable, if I were an Individual Reservist/IMA in a given squadron, could I work out an arrangement to request active-duty orders to cover me while I pay for my own flight training in the hopes of completing all my ratings in order to streamline the process and make myself competitive for a board? The only cost would be salary and NOT flight training, which would be covered (in this case) by GI Bill funds.

Searched the forum and saw mixed opinions on this. Currently AD MQ-9 Pilot looking to go to UPT in the Guard/Reserves. Have a visit to a Heavy unit in the next month. I’ll be in back home on leave and they were nice enough to let me spend some time at the squadron. Not a drill weekend or big organized rush event, just a casual midweek visit. Show up, meet people, see the plane, maybe lunch afterwards. My questions are: Wear nice civilian clothes or bring my flight suit with me to wear? Should I bring as much of a UPT packet as I have together right now with me and update it later? Or just a resume? I know first impressions are important, appreciate any help

Anyone have any info on what UCT is like and more specifically what being a CSO on the C-130 entails? I was recently eliminated from UPT (didn't pass formation in the T-6) but I am being recommended for CSO and considering finding a reserve unit to sponsor me. Are there reserve fighter units that higher back seaters? Any info would be helpful!

I was selected at a fighter unit in 2020 at age 26. My father also served in the AF so the AF had all of my medical records since I was born. This made the process extremely long, and I was only able to get to my IFC1 in 2021 (17 months after selection). To my horror, I contracted Covid during the IFC1 and was unable to complete the physical. My unit did everything they could but obviously they couldn't do much with the failed IFC1, so I was dropped and lost my slot. I didn't do anything to leave on bad terms in my opinion and everything was amicable. Here is where I am at now. Age - 28.5 AETC told me to resubmit medical documentation fo…

Thought I would spread the word on this development. A few days ago, someone on the Air Force OTS subreddit alleged A3 told them that FY25 UPT slots for the Guard were cut significantly. Then, today, the 157th FS in SC sent a memo to applicants stating that no FY24 hiring boards would be held stating: "The number of UPT class dates available to Air National Guard fighter units has been cut dramatically. The South Carolina Air National Guard currently has three individuals who have been selected to attend pilot training, and none of those three will be able to conduct training starting in Fiscal Year 2025. It would be irresponsible to conduct a hiring board in 20…

I find myself in an interesting situation. Love my squadron but we are entering a transition. I won't fly the new aircraft for a few years. In the meantime, I would like to go back to UPT or UCT and instruct. Does anyone know of a path for an ANG pilot to do this? Any ideas? With ADOS, MPA, PFI there has to be a way, right? Filling a need with someone willing and able to fly seems like an easy kill to my smooth brain. Any info or ideas would be really helpful.

I recently retook the AFOQT, and all my scores that could go up did, namely my Quant. However, for unfortunate algorithm reasons, my TBAS went down. Do you think it is worth retaking the TBAS to try and get an ANG Fighter slot? I have enlisted with an F-16 unit as a maintainer, and am shipping to BMT on 4/22, so this would be while at tech school/early next year. I've included scores and background info below. Thank you. Age: 28 Day Job: Legacy Airline 737 FO 5600 hours Bachelors with a 3.8 GPA Warbird and formation time (working in a FAST Card and T-33 type rating, expected Q2 2026) Current Scores: P:99 CSO:99 ABM:97 ACAD:89 VERB:…

AFRC is closing our squadron this year and the members are getting little help in finding a new TR job. I ran across this document on the AFRC website, anyone ever heard of this program? I asked my MPF about it and surprise......they knew nothing and offered little help. I might call the POC on page 3 (marked as page 1) but I first wanted to see if anyone had any experience with it? My guess is that just about anyone coded as "displaced" is eligible (just as this document states), but I have this idea in the back of my head that if you are aircrew you can forget about it, only good old fashion networking, interview, etc, will land you a new aircrew job. In my c…

I just finished my 6 years in November and am now in my 2 years of IRR. My husband is at AMS and is graduating in May. Am I still allowed to wear my uniform for his graduation and first salute? He really wants me to, but I don't want to break any rules. I've googled a bit but haven't found anything definitive. Also (and maybe I should put this in the AMS thread) he emailed me to send him his mess dress for their dining out the last evening and if I would be attending. I'm assuming I need a formal dress for this, right? I asked for clarification on it but I doubt he'll get access to email any time soon. I haven't been to a dining out in ages and I was in uniform the l…

Hello, I am looking for anyone who has some knowledge on this certain topic. I am very interested in flying within an Air National Guard unit. I am looking into enlisting within a unit because I know it will increase my chances for an interview and possibly being selected within the unit I join. I recently graduated college this year with a BS degree. I am also looking at applying for an officer position within the unit. I have been told that it is harder to be selected for a UPT slot from being an officer already due to the "commitment I would have within the unit already," and what the unit would have already invested in me if I was chosen for an officer position…

Looking for advice/comments on a couple different Reserve routes. I have a traditional Nav job lined up. However I still don't have my "real" job locked down. One option is about a 3 hour drive to the unit, so very doable. All of the other options are a cross country commute (no direct flights either). Obviously the nearby job makes sense for the Reserve job, but it may be that one of the cross country jobs is too good to pass up. The other option I may have is several IMA opportunities within a couple hours of where I'd work (possibly in the same local area for some of the jobs I'm looking at). Besides the obvious difference in flying versus non-flying, what are some …

I know we have to get a dental exam every year, and since I get my teeth cleaned twice a year with my civilian dentist, I have him fill out the exam form and I turn that in. When I first got into the ARC I thought I heard some doctor type tell us that we had to get examined by an *Air Force* dentist every 3 years. I might have heard wrong or he might have been wrong. Has anyone heard of or experienced this?

https://access.afpc.af.mil/pcsmdmz/Form T.HTML The site above gives information about the new AFOQT Form T. I just have 2 issues: (1) It says that the Pilot score no longer incorporates Airthmetic Reasoning (AR) (2) It says that the Instrument Comprehension section is only 5 minutes long Can anyone confirm these two changes are actually true? Or is it just repeated typos?

People are always asking about where the good deals are anymore, well, here's one. AGR position with the Washington ANG, bonus eligible, non-deployable, live in the awesome PNW, and you still get to fly fighters. It's one of the hidden gems not many know about and it truly is a good deal, outstanding work/family life. We're looking for F-15 IP fighter pilots, current and qualified are highly desired with experience in the ONE mission. However, if you're the right fit for the position we may have the ability to be flexible for a requal or to pull from other fighter MDS (i.e. F-16). If you're interested, shoot me a PM with your .mil address and I'll get in touch so I c…

Does anyone know how to get a hold of information or contacts on RPA reserve units holding UPT boards. I have searched all over sent dead end emails, and phone calls trying to find information for Creech AFB reserves. After interviewing 4 times and finally getting selected for a tanker spot, I was recently DQ'ed for a eye issue at my FC1, but was told I still qualified for RPA spots. While the news was a kick in the nuts, I still want to fly for the Guard or Reserve even if its unmanned.

Repost from another forum: Background: USMC AH-1W driver looking to go ANG FW fighters. I know the FWQ course that was previously designed for Army RW guys without joint-FW primary experiences (t-6/34c) has gone away. Looking to see in more recent years (FWQ seemed to die around 2013) if anyone on here put in for a rated-slot, went to the ARB, and were given a specific pathway. Thanks.

Many moons ago I posted on here asking for advice about juggling my small business while going through UPT. I got a variety of comments and direct messages ranging from "hire a manager" to "I can't see how it would work" to "a friend of a friend did something like that". I ended up hiring a manager to run the place while I was gone and gave up a big chunk of my salary to do it. But I trusted him, and with my wife's help running admin stuff from behind the scenes I was able to keep and actually grow my business. I just pinned on pilot wings a couple of days ago and wanted to come back here to thank everyone for the encouragement and advice. I also am back here to…

I'm guessing you are limited to 5 yrs Mil Leave in Federal positions. How does it work if you switch agencies- say Guard Tech to other Agency? Does the 5 yrs start over by Agency or is it all under OPM time?
