Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

Where do most of the pilots live? AC showed up as an assignment in my B-course drop and I’m doing research. I have a 6 year old so schools/family life are important.

  2. Hey everyone - I wanted to leave a detailed review of my experience with initial CA ANG recruiting through my first UPT interview. I recently went through the process of getting my PPL and taking all the required tests to apply for pilot boards (AFOQT and TBAS). I encountered a few pitfalls along the way that seem unique to my area (Southern California) and I wanted to share those with others who might be doing the same thing. Hopefully this helps anyone who's just starting out on the adventure. Feel free to PM me for more details if you want. To get right to it, here's a list of the specific things I ended up having trouble with. I put a summary of my background and…

Hello, I'm currently an active duty maintainer aiming to get a pilot slot with an air national guard or reserve unit, preferably one at the current base I'm at or in my home state. I already enlisted with a bachelors degree and I'm currently pursuing a PPL at local flight school near my base with the money I'm earning and saving up. I'm also planning on scheduling the AFOQT and TBAS soon. I've almost hit the one year mark of my four year contract and turning 24 this year so I want to begin putting together my OTS package. Should I try to palace chase then apply for slots or finish my contract and then apply? I'll be 27 by the time I'm finished with my enlistment which is …

  4. Hey guys, I was a guard dude with a viper slot and now I’m just a guard dude with wings. I got a lot of things to figure out but I wanted to jump on this forum and see if anyone out there has insight on the process from here. I was told to go find a new unit but anyone that knows anything about securing a good job in the guard will tell you it’s not that easy. One of my biggest questions; how do I go from ANG to AFRC? I know what you’re thinking, “don’t do it!” But my situation paired with my desire for a particular part of the country is driving that move. Has anyone here done it? All I’ve heard is “it’s hard to do” and the “AFRC is a shitty deal” can anyone …

Anyone have any info on the 158th? I know they just had a board last year. Any rumors on how often they hold UPT boards? I love the area and obviously the airframe is a plus too. I've tried to contact them via their website but haven't gotten a response. Any help contacting them would be greatly appreciated too. Thanks.

With the 193rd having a UPT board in the near future I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the type of flying that the unit conducts. Given the mission I would assume the majority of flights would be high altitude orbits for hours on end. Does the EC-130J pipeline mirror that of an MC-130 or more of a slick 130?

  7. I’ve heard about this happening before but I can’t find the thread. Here is the generic situation: Unit A is my preferred unit (location, airframe, mission, etc.). I also like Unit B, but not as much as Unit A. Unit B has a board a few months before Unit A. IF I am fortunate enough to get the slot with B, how unethical is it to also try and get a slot with A? This would obviously occur before any training would begin. On one hand, I see this as a douchey thing to do. On the other, they should have alternates right? Also, should I be upfront about it?

I am an enlisted guy who is going up for the home unit soon. I kept my mouth shut for the most part since I was a punk kid and my mil father advised me to, however, I am starting to wonder if I stayed to quiet? I have been told by some of my recs that I need to make sure that I socialize with the pilots. Anybody have any advice about how to act in the situations leading up to interview time.

Due to numerous issues, it’s been over a year since my unit submitted the initial RPA to hire me as an ART. The most recent RPA submission was exactly a month ago and the announcement hasn’t shown on USAJOBS yet. Anybody have similar experiences? The wife and I are kind of freaking out, looking at returning to AD (life situation doesn’t support the airlines).

I heard rumor that in the last military budget from 2018 (I forget that things acronym) that Congress okay’d federal promotion dates to be back dated to the state promotion dates allowing back pay to be retroactively warned for E7’s and up and O4’s and up. Has anyone heard about this? Is it true? If so how does a guy get his federal recognition date back dated so you can get paid?

  12. Hello all. Broadly: Is it possible to attend a medical school or law school while serving as a traditional guardsman/reservist? Specifically: My areas of concern are in the ability to plan ahead for TDY or deployment. For example, if taking a semester of classes, would I have to drop out mid semester because some type of training or deployment comes up? Or would I be able to expect a 3-4 month notice so that I won’t enroll in certain classes in the affected semester. Also, would the law/med program be willing to let a guard/reservist miss numerous semesters because of duty? ABSTRACT: Would being a pilot in the reserves make an applicant to law/med m…

Should I include a DD214 in my applications, when it says I was in for only 26 days? I have mixed feelings about this because I was at Navy OCS for a month. Discharged for sitting height (able to fit in USAF aircraft though) and eyesight (got PRK-no complications). Perhaps I should attach a note with my DD214.

Search didn’t pull anything up so mods please delete if this has been covered previously. I’m a AD pilot starting to apply for ANG flying opportunities. One of the units I’m applying to ask for a cover letter. Besides highlighting my AD experience and my ties to the local area is there something else I should include? I realize this is a small part of the whole process but I don’t want to make an unforced error.

  16. After the hornets nest was stirred in the Bonus thread, I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where we can track this threat. We've been hearing talk of non-vol 179/365's coming down to the ANG at my unit (C-17), but so far it's only been talk. With the Active Duty ranks decimated over the last 5 years, it only makes sense they'd come after us next. It's been discussed at length within the walls of my squadron, but if involuntary mobilizations start rolling out to Traditionals, there's going to be a mass exodus of guys who really don't feel like that monthly check from Uncle Sam in 25+ years is worth the QOL hit today. If you've seen this happen fir…

  17. I tried searching and couldn't find anything on how often do units hire. Is it every year or is it once every few years? I'm a 27 year old junior in college and New Jersey is my top choice (I'm originally from there). Ideally, I would love any unit in the Northeast, Great Lakes States or even Idaho or Wyoming. I love cold weather, four seasons, lush forests, mountains, hockey and snowboarding. Right now I live in the south and it's not for me. I would prefer a fighter unit but I am fine with flying heavies. The other reason I would prefer to move back is I would like a Law Enforcement civilian career. In the Northeast and Great Lakes states, the police unio…

  18. Curious if anyone will be willing to share their schedules on a month to month basis. Obviously, dual flying jobs are very demanding. Are you working 25 days/month? Are you gone for most of the month? How do you balance your family/social life? etc.. Appreciate the inputs!

  19. For the masses. I’m currently AD with almost 19 years (prior-E). C-17 background and currently flying the T-1. I’d like to continue to serve in a part-time capacity. Does anyone have any idea of how successful someone would be making the transition to the Guard/Reserves, with that much time in. I’d prefer a C-17 unit, but would accept any job, if/when I’m hired by the airlines. 2nd option: Completing 20 years AD, then going Guard/Reserves? thanks in advance

  20. I am in the process of applying and was wondering if there are any units that specifically want to remain with the F-15 in the future. I realize one can't afford to be picky in applying, so I'm shot gunning apps to any fighter unit I can stand to live at that gives me the best ability to go home and spend time with family. A recent conversation with a pilot in a C unit told me they were indifferent to the -35 or new 15s. I think it would be cool however to fly the jet that was on posters hung in my room growing up, and it may be beneficial to invest more time in visiting those particular units. This thread is not intended to turn into a -35 vs -15 debate, there is a seper…

Anyone out there Palace Front after getting passed over twice for Lt Col ? Looking for advice... When should I start the process to get medically approved to separate? When should I start coordinating a waiver for getting twice passed over? I don’t want to do it after I get passed over and then try and seven day opt and then not get the waiver approved. Any other Limfacs that I’m missing? I’m trying to make the transition as smooth as possible. Feel free to PM me. Thanks

  22. Started by Wasp,

Long time lurker here, I have searched through the forums without luck trying to find out a bit more about the OR ANG. When applying I understand that they pool all applicants together and pick a couple highly qualified applicants out, for both Klamath Falls and also Portland. My question is if interviewed and picked up does the candidate get any say where he/she goes? Klamath has a largely different mission than Portland and I understand you'd get "farmed" out to another unit for several years before you return to the 114th and then are full time, whereas at Portland it is more of the traditional guard "gig".

  23. I’m currently enlisted in the ANG. I Have all my tests done, bachelors degree, ready to apply to guard units. I’m currently in contact with a reserve recruiter for an unsponsored board. My question is, can I get hired unsponsored, and in the time frame of waiting to go to OTS, interview and get hired by a Gaurd Unit and take the Gaurd route instead? My basis for this is I’m 26 years old and I want to get the ball rolling on getting into UPT. I really want fighters and plan on sending my package to both Wisconsin and Minnesota or whatever unit has a hiring board in the next few months. Should I wait to go unsponsored until I hear back from these units or other Gaurd un…

  24. I am looking to contact the 122nd squadron (the New Orleans F-15 folks) to learn more about what they are looking for. However, when I went on their website (159th Fighter Wing) and called the number in the contact us page, I just went to the webmaster's voicemail. If someone could give me some direction on how to go about this, it would be much appreciated. I know talking to and meeting with the squad is very important to increase your chances as a candidate. Any response is welcome, I don't have many people around me who know much about the ANG and I've been trying to figure this out for a while.

Does anyone has the Form 2030 that I can download from? I cannot view the PDF file on the www.e-publishing.af.mil website. I found PDF version of the form on other website, but it is not the 2017 version, which I think is the latest. Also, do I sign the form right away or wait until selected for the interview and sign it there, since my witness has no "Grade of Witness"? I appreciate any help or advice. Thank you.
