Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you get a pilot slot and are committed to 10 years AD in the Air Force, aren't you pretty screwed if you decide you don't like it? While it seems most people like flying for the AF, not every job is for everyone. I just don't see this discussed a lot, and it seems like a major issue. Am I missing something?

Here's the link: https://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35678731/ns/politics/ It seems the reliable numbers are hard to find, but it seems unlikely that we'll get as many F-35s as we need to replace the F-16, F-18 AND A-10 if the cost is really that high. I wonder how the "partner nations" are taking the news. I wish defense contractors and the government could build more realistic cost growth estimates into the acquisitions process so that we don't keep paying 2x as much for a system as we originally were told. It makes the whole bidding system just seem dishonest when you know contractors like Lockheed have been building weapons systems for hundreds of projects and know …

Don't vote in a poll that was posted 6-9 years ago when you add nothing substantial to the thread. All it does is bump it to the top!! Choke yourself before you consider doing this in the future. And to make this thread slightly better than useless...

LtGen AP Clark, instrumental in the Stalag Luft III breakout that inspired The Great Escape, and former Supt of USAFA, has died at age 96. He helped set up the POW archive at the USAFA library, and used to speak to cadets in History 330 pretty regularly. A Supt who Steve McQueen tried to be like. Here's a toast.

Is the AF getting the Harvest Hawk package like the USMC for their C-130s? It would be an added plus for the airlift fleet and bring more fight to the enemy. Tac Air isn't needed as much when the largest enemy vehicle is a Toyota 4x4 in Afgan. Let the C-130s drop the Candy and see who picks it up. If it's the bad guys, fire them up. Perhaps the CoS being an old AC-130 guy will find the funding. How much would one F-35 cost anyway? Bet you can get 5 Harvest Hawk packages for the price of one F-35. Are there any AF C-130 crews that would like to pickup that additional mission? Better than flying a RPV in getting kills.

Can anyone provide a brief overview of how the Air Force mitigates against low-level bird strikes? I seem to recall from a trip to Seymour Johnson that there was a service which highlighted low-level routes where birds might be more prevalent at a given time of the year. I also believe that there was a grading system for risk. Are these systems still in effect, and are they integrated into Falcon View or similar? Is it down to the discretion of the mission commander to avoid these, or are the AFIs that mandate flagged areas be avoided? TIA

So a little while ago we had a WG/CC call. Part of the show for the day was the presentation of two Bronze Stars. Both to LRS types. In neither citation did I hear one mention of enemy fire. The closest thing I could discern was that one guy might have been present in a mortar attack. This is not the first time I've seen and heard of the BS being awarded to guys who were not under fire from the enemy. Am I missing something, or is the BS becoming less of a medal for actual achievement, and more of another "thanks for playing" feel-good medal, similar to the Air Medal?

First of all, I searched for a similar post and found none, which is why I started this one. This being my first post here, I'm trying to abide by the rules. Now for the hard question. Are former military aviators required to disclose their involvement in military aviation accidents/incidents to potential civilian employers? If so, how much can/should they disclose? Informed opinions, guidance, and recommendations would be greatly appreciated...

Just saw this... https://socialmedia.defense.gov/index.php/2010/02/26/dod-official-policy-on-newsocial-media/ Basic summary is that Social Networking Sites (SNS in the document) are to be opened up on NIPR to get with the times. Doesn't mean it will happen...maybe we can get BaseOps unblocked at Vance now...

https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/2010/02/airforce_f16_crash_osan_022610w/ Pilot safe after F-16C bailout over S. Korea By Bruce Rolfsen - Staff writer Posted : Friday Feb 26, 2010 12:54:50 EST An Air Force pilot safely ejected from his F-16C Fighting Falcon on Thursday as he tried to land the jet at Osan Air Base, South Korea, according to Air Force reports. The unidentified pilot from Osan’s 36th Fighter Squadron suffered minor injuries. The jet was heavily damaged and crashed within Osan’s boundaries. The F-16C had been the lead jet for a three-plane formation, a report said. While preparing to land at Osan at 12:34 p.m., the 22-year-old plane becam…

I just got passed up in ROTC for a rated slot, so I won't be flying in the AF unless they pull me from the alt list; I'm not counting on it. Anyways, I want to fly for a career once I get out of the AF and as of now have ASEL Comm and CFI, working on CFI-I and AMEL Comm. Not only do I want to fly while on AD, but I want to instruct and build hours. I have several questions that I will put below. Assuming there is an aeroclub on base, would I be allowed to instruct on the side? If none on base, how about instructing off base? What are the clubs normally like? What kinds of a/c do they usually have? Just light singles or twins too? Would I even be able to work th…

All, I know this forum is mainly geared towards pilot talk, but perhaps someone out there may be able to assist. I am a current ROTC masters student (heading to Columbus AFB hopefully before the next millennium), in the process of writing a thesis. I was curious if anyone who has done the same and has used/gone-through the USAF Institutional Review Board...or knows how to submit/get approval for human subject proposals, or knows their basic protocol. Last I heard they were located out at Brooks city-base...but that may have changed, according to the site and the PR lady located there. Any information would be of great help. Thanks. Riebs

Anyone with AFPC or UPT assignment insight know what's going on with all the Herks dropping to T-1 classes? Can we expect it to continue throughout the fiscal year? Indefinitely? Also, seems like all the AFSOC planes are still going to Corpus, but lots of AMC and ACC Herks for the recent Toners. ?

Hey guys, About to put together a package here. I had eye surgery in accordance with AFI 48-123 a while back, does anyone know if there is any paperwork needed to go in the packet stating I had the surgery but my eyes are good to go? Also, do I need to include a flight physical in the packet? Thanks
