Squadron Bar

Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.

Forum Rules

1 – Keep it civil

If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed.  If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.

2 - Listen before you speak

A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."

Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force.  Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.

3 – UTFSF

Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.

4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.

After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"

5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense

This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".

6 – No unpaid advertisements

Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed.  Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum.  For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

When President Obama releases his budget on Monday, there may be a big hole where funding for NASA's Constellation program used to be. When President Obama releases his budget on Monday, there may be a big hole where funding for NASA's Constellation program used to be. Constellation is the umbrella program that includes the Ares rocket -- the replacement for the aging space shuttles. According to a report in the Orlando Sentinel, the forthcoming budget -- which the president will announce in detail during Wednesday night's State of the Union address -- will include no funding for lunar landers, no moon bases, and no Constellation program at all. Instead, NAS…

Apparently the Army is looking to relocate the Pentagon to western Kansas. "The move will take place in three primary phases," said Johnson. "Initially we will use a giant crane to lift the building onto a barge in the Potomac River. From there we will float the barge down the Atlantic Coast and into the Gulf of Mexico. Then, we will sail the Pentagon up the Mississippi River to just south of St. Louis. In the final stage, we will place the building on large flat-bed trucks and drive it the rest of the way." "We have sought the advice of the Navy and determined that we can just treat the building like a big ship as we move. All of the employees will basically be exp…

Bigfoot Trackers Say They've Got a Body Wednesday, August 13, 2008 Bigfoot may have been found. Maybe. We'll see. Two Northern California men and two Georgians say they've got a body, a photo and DNA evidence pertaining to the elusive forest-dwelling man-ape — and that they'll reveal all at a press conference in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday. "I think you'll find that this is the real deal," Robert Barrows of Redwood City, Calif., told the Bay City News local wire service. Matthew Whitton, a cop in Clayton County, Ga., and his friend Rick Dyer, a former corrections officer, say they recently found the body in the woods of northern Georgia. Veteran Bigfoot t…

I hadn't heard until recently about the whole OBOGS issues and resulting stand-down, 60 minutes interviews and all the press and whatnot about the F22. Just curious what ended up happening. Anyone know of any resolution on this? I'm a rotary student so doesn't directly affect me but just genuinely curious...

The Mighty BUFF (the world's greatest warplane) took flight for the first time April 15, 1952 flown by none other than Tex Johnston. Love it or hate it, you have to admit the BUFF is an amazing jet. Hasn't been in "the shit" much lately, but there still is some fight left in the old girl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWtQ4lfU2vo

Gents Looking for a little help in righting a wrong... The Bentwaters Cold War Museum (https://www.bcwm.org.uk/) in the UK was the victim of a theft of two patches recently, and I was hoping someone on here could help replace one of them. It is a 'Got Nukes?' patch with a 'Nuclear Operations' tab at the bottom... Believe it is a AFGSC patch, definitely post-Cold War but at this point that's not the point. The point is some fucktard stole it (they actually moved a close circuit TV camera prior to gabbing it) and this excellent museum, run by volunteers who work hard to preserve the memory of USAF personnel who lived and worked at the Twin Bases, is now with…

Looking to buy a laptop/netbook within the next couple months, but not sure what to expect from the academics portions of ASBC, UPT, TDY, etc, or what the schedule will look like (ie, how much down time in between doing stuff). Is there any benefit to carrying a computer with you, or should it just be dorm entertainment?

Two MV-22 incidents in Okinawa this week, one a total loss the other a major gear malfunction. A local captured some pictures of the water "landing"...I believe they all survived but looks a bit harder than a landing. WestJet today introduced a new state-of-the-art money-saving feature on board all flights aimed at countering the rising price of jet fuel. Effective today, WestJet will be using air mixed with helium in the ventilation system to lighten the weight of the aircraft. Helium is approximately 85 per cent lighter than nitrogen, which accounts for 80 per cent of the air we breathe. With a maximum takeoff weight of more than 150,000 pounds, adding helium to the air mix will provide fuel savings of approximately three to four per cent on board WestJet's Boeing Next-Generation 737s. This will, in turn, allow WestJet to pass the savings on to its guests. https://www.westjet.c…
