Squadron Bar
Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.
1 – Keep it civil
If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed. If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.
2 - Listen before you speak
A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."
Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force. Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.
3 – UTFSF
Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.
4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.
After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"
5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense
This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".
6 – No unpaid advertisements
Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed. Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum. For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

Ever since I have gotten out, I miss getting my daily dose of what is going on in the world (from a military intel standpoint). Does anybody out there know of or use any good intel sites (obviously unclass)? I still have access to Earlybird...which is just basically news clippings and I use sinodefence.com to keep up on Red China. FAS isn't bad, just a little biased.

Forty years later, Army colonel Henry Moak still loves his pound cake! Moak capped off his retirement ceremony by digging into an old can of military 'C' rations pound cake from 1969, which he brought back from Vietnam... :salut: to you, COL Moak, on your retirement! And for using a vintage P-38 can opener to open the cake! Cheers! M2 "Get some!"

A French Infantryman's View of American Soldiers by Jean-Marc Liotier The U.S. often hears echoes of worldwide hostility against the application of its foreign policy, but seldom are they reached by the voices of those who experience first hand how close we are to the USA . In spite of contextual political differences and conflicting interests that generate friction, we do share the same fundamental values -- and when push comes to shove that is what really counts. Through the eyes of that French OMLT (Operational Mentoring Liaison Teams) infantryman you can see how strong the bond is on the ground. In contrast with the Americans, the French soldiers don't seem to writ…

I did a search and could not find anything, so forgive me if it is on here somewhere. Could some of you seasoned dudes give me some advice on dining outs? I have the rules and will be the POM. We have been told it is a combination of a dinning in/ dinning out so slight buffoonery but nothing too major. Any feedback is appreciated I just want to make it fun for my classmates. Cheers Spoon

I have been following the "poser" thread. While it has been interesting, I thought I would try and balance that with the story of a real hero: Mike Monsoor, Navy Seal, MOH, Silver Star, Bronze Star, purple heart. https://www.navyseals.com/michael-monsoor Excerpt from the citation: Navy Narrative: “On 29 September (2006), Monsoor was part of a sniper overwatch security position in eastern Ramadi, Iraq, with three other SEALs and eight Iraqi soldiers. They were providing overwatch security while joint and combined forces were conducting missions in the area. Ramadi had been a violent and intense area for a very strong and aggressive insurgency for some time. All…

Looking to buy a laptop/netbook within the next couple months, but not sure what to expect from the academics portions of ASBC, UPT, TDY, etc, or what the schedule will look like (ie, how much down time in between doing stuff). Is there any benefit to carrying a computer with you, or should it just be dorm entertainment?

Found this over on Airwarriors. So I though I'd share. Source: https://www.airwarriors.com/forum/showthread.php/155343-Where-have-all-the-Fliers-(or-is-that-Flowers)-gone...long-time-ago Some interesting thoughts on current events. Sent by a retired Air Force F-111 pilot. Where have the Fighter Pilots gone? The Fighter Pilots are sulking in the Ready Room and waiting for the Skipper to return from the Psychiatric Ward and his girly man "Shrink" because he would not take the new "Don't Ask, Don't Tell Jack Wagon" for his wingman or much less in his Squadron! To think that a "Fighter Pilot" could sit in an air conditioned trailer at Nellis AFB during the d…

The Mighty BUFF (the world's greatest warplane) took flight for the first time April 15, 1952 flown by none other than Tex Johnston. Love it or hate it, you have to admit the BUFF is an amazing jet. Hasn't been in "the shit" much lately, but there still is some fight left in the old girl. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWtQ4lfU2vo

Written by an Air Force Bgen . . . This guy says it like it is and was. When the country is in trouble it wants the "Pappy Boyingtons" and his group to fight, but in peacetime, they want the politically correct crowd. His reference to Tailhook is because he learned to fly in the Navy, flying the A-4 and A-7 before moving over to the Guard. By BGEN Greg Stroud (Ret) Some of you know that I was recently "retired" as the 162 Fighter Wing Commander. The decision was made by Brig Gen Mike Colangelo, theArizona Air Commander, who replaced me because he "just wants to change the culture at the 162nd." Not for cause or performance or any other reason. This officer never…

Looking for help/advice on homeowners' insurance. If you've been shopping for a home on the eastern seaboard this summer, you probably know a lot of insurance companies (USAA, Allstate, State Farms) are running away screaming and won't write the policy. This is my first time straying off the USAA insurance reservation (and yes I've read the "USAA" thread) and was wondering what others have to say. USAA is directing me toward ASI. Additionally, I have a quote with Amica, who allegedly has a sterling reputation, but they seem to be TWICE as much as ASI for the same coverage. Is anyone insured with either company? Any recommendations? Thanks.

I are not computer smart, so I thought I'd see if anyone else is having the same issue. Currently deployed to a sandy location, so I'm a frequent user of VPN to gain access to Netflix, Pandora, and other blocked websites. About a week ago, Pandora stopped working, giving me the restricted/"no worky in your country" memo. Netflix still works fine (doesn't when I turn the VPN off) and so do the other webpages, so the issue doesn't seem to be the VPN (I use hotspot shield). Anyone else having problems Pandora (or not having problems with Pandora), or did Pandora start blocking known VPN IP addresses?

Might be travelling through Spain TDY in the near future and was looking at getting from Rota to Morroco via rental car/ferry. Anyone done this before? Seems like it should be pretty easy and staight forward. Does this require a civ passport or can this day trip be done with NATO orders and a military ID?

Just this past weekend my daughter lost her khaki "Air Force Soccer" cap while boating. The hat was a gift, and until you have kids, you'll never appreciate the look of dissapointment on my poor kids face when I couldn't recover the cap before it slipped deeper under the boat and to the bottom of the lake. Up to that point, I didn't realize how fond of the cap she really was. I've searched everywhere, to include google, the USAFA gift shop, ebay etc and only found a photo of the cap. As a plea for help, if any of you have a spare or know of one please let me know - I'll pay top dollar for a duplicate. Please PM me if you have a lead. Thanks in advance.
