  1. My unit (and a few others I've heard from) are working to get bonus-eligible guys on a downrange trip for the tax-free. Not sure if any of them have received the pay-out yet. Less than 15 years time in service.
  2. Thanks for the intel. I'll be shocked if this is just contained within the Guard 11F community. Especially since they seem so disposable at this point... 😳 Pretty shitty state of affairs when the Guard guys start "voting with their feet." I'm ready.
  3. Is this for real? Any Guard guys aware of this happening? Asking for a friend...
  4. Where's that form I fill out to help the AF save money?
  5. Great... now I suddenly hate my wife. Thanks, asshole!
  6. Jesus, dude. After all the great news this year... ouch.
  7. One civilian job? Guess we haven’t met yet.
  8. Point made... Don't choose a company based on the current labor relations (Pilots, FAs, AMTs, etc). That shit is so cyclical you'll never be able to keep up even when you work for the company. Look back at the overarching theme of this thread.... go with the first company that puts you in class and do your best to avoid a commute.
  9. Do you work for Southwest? Honest question only because I can't say I've ever "worked hard" at SWA.
  10. I went with SWA. Would do it again. I'd explain why, but you said bases can't be a consideration. 😏 Reference your upgrade question - speculation is that number could drop to 6-7 years in the future. SWA had a hiring lull starting around 2009. It really didn't pick back up until 2014. The theory is that 2014 and beyond hires may see the 10 year upgrade figure decrease as they work through guys hired between those years. Additionally they are really ramping up upgrade training this year which will also play a big factor if that continues. Congrats if this is your situation. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.
  11. Probably preaching to the choir here, but 2-3 years out is also a good timeframe to start "tightening the belt" on your finances if you're considering separating for the airlines. Pay off the car loans, eliminate credit card debt, start building up the rainy day cash account.... Everyone talks about how much first year pay sucks, but it doesn't instantly get better when second year pay kicks in. While YMMV, and having heeded my advice above, it wasn't until about year three at the airline that I could finally start to "loosen the belt." While I love hearing the stories of folks going to indoc while on terminal leave, it seems to be the exception to the rule. Plan accordingly.
  12. ...said no recruiter about a pilot candidate EVER.
  13. SWA bidding closes at 1200 central on the 9th. We can see the awarded line a few hours later.
  14. After the hornets nest was stirred in the Bonus thread, I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread where we can track this threat. We've been hearing talk of non-vol 179/365's coming down to the ANG at my unit (C-17), but so far it's only been talk. With the Active Duty ranks decimated over the last 5 years, it only makes sense they'd come after us next. It's been discussed at length within the walls of my squadron, but if involuntary mobilizations start rolling out to Traditionals, there's going to be a mass exodus of guys who really don't feel like that monthly check from Uncle Sam in 25+ years is worth the QOL hit today. If you've seen this happen first-hand, please let us know the circumstances (AFSC, unit, or any other details you can safely share).
  15. The SERE empire becomes more and more of a PITA every few years too. With each AFI re-write it seems we're required to do some form of useless new training. I did Fairchild and Pensacola. Can we just call it good?
  16. Don't forget to run a thorough ORM review. If the compressed timeline is driving the crew to a high enough value, it will probably require a phone call to the waiver authority (OG/CC?) at 0400. Enough of those phone calls from guys while they're standing at the clearing barrel on speaker phone, and I think your boss will come up with a new policy.
  17. Now that Duck has been kicked to the curb, I look forward to following your progression. As a fellow 05'er, I sincerely hope you get that promotion. On the Guard side, I'm going to press-to-test on not doing ACSC in correspondence and see what happens. I'll let you guys know how that worked out for me in 6 years.
  18. As an 05 commission, I’ll admit I was intrigued by what this guy had to say for a while. But now he’s either drinking too much, or a troll. Either way, Chang was way more entertaining.
