...sigh At the end of the day, I think this deputy (and cops writ-large), are tee'd up for these kinds of failures by design. Statute, case law, policy, training, and leadership. It's a soft-statism that manifests itself into a mindset that they can go anywhere, do anything, and at the slightest hint of discomfort, escalate to violence without fear of consequence. And it's reinforced and enabled by judges, or in this case, by a well-intentioned jury that at an individual level wants in their heart to support service to law enforcement. Mark my words: this very same situation, played out tomorrow, would result in the same outcome, within a rounding error of 100%.

There's some, but not a whole lot, of energy/maneuverability stabilized above ref, below landing weight, on a 3 degree path. Not near as much (read: damn near none) during second segment climb. That's what I'm worried about. At least at my home drome I'm crossing the fence typically above 2.5k' and accelerating past 220kts.

With what almost was Tenerife 2.0 at JFK, AA 777 v DL 737, a thought occurred to me: a lot of energy is spent in initial and recurrent training on precise callouts and movements based on the GUI presented. While this is a good thing toward producing a homogenized product for the line, there seemed to be a lot of pull on the eyes toward just the PFD, with little discussion or encouragement to, well, scan. At all. So for myself, I identified the threat and adjusted accordingly. I make a conscious effort to scan the entry points down field, identify anyone approaching and holding short. On the roll, just after the 80kt call, quick glance to the engines (white needles pointing in roughly the same direction and near the carrots), airspeed (still under 100), then up and check the runway for movement ahead, quick glances down to the PFD for accel progress. More or less the same thought process, as much as brain bytes allow, inside of a mile on landing. fwiw

Grew up in the Marine KC community smokin a lucky. Old heads would tell of the risk aversion, how we were "high value assets", Corps was lucky to have Herks a' la Key West Agreement and all that. Fast forward to OIF week one: community had already lost one crew the prior year, I had a front row seat to a notable blue on blue, and now crews were coming back with SAFREPs of having to maneuver due to active tracking by AAA on the way into the LZ. Anyone feel free to chime in and correct my understanding of the history and facts: My first shutdown that I experienced while receiving a DoW paycheck was during the Clinton administration. Our paychecks were delayed a few days, but the paychecks arrived in full. Every shutdown since, same song. In fact, while I was always required to show up to work, even if my paycheck was delayed, other federal agencies were handled differently. Some agencies, or certain workgroups within those agencies, were told to stay home. And yet, time and again, once a CR was passed by Congress, those workgroups received their full paychecks. Seems like the government, and media mouthpieces, will use words like "furlough"...but that word has a different connotation than if I, in my current role, were to be confronted with the same term. Yes, the fact that Congress can't do its fucking job is righteous bullshit. But this admin isn't really breaking any new ground here. Broken trust, indeed.
