Sorry, as a SrA you should be a lot smarter that and I don't care if the photo is three years old and you've won a few awards, you are an embarrassment to the USAF. I've seen a lot of outstanding troops shown the door simply because of force reduction efforts, so why she should be allowed to continue to wear the uniform is beyond me.

That article pretty much sums up everything. I think my time here is done. It's been fun...and the airlines are hiring!

Sadly, I am with you. I so badly wanted to serve and make a difference, but I find myself on the road for the 15th time with no regard for my future or that of my family. From leadership, to opstempo, to equipment, we are losing on all fronts. We were once the greatest Air Force on earth, but sadly at the rate we are currently going we will be nothing more than a sad footnote of failure.

Different strokes for different folks bro. I've been a civilian for 8 months and I'm much happier. I make a lot less money, but that'll change.

Cold turkey right meow. Probably going to pick up a Reserve job this fall.

I think the line needs to learn from medical and separate the rated dudes from the non-rated dudes into different competitive categories. In medical we have five compcats: docs, dentists, nurses, MSCs (administrators), and BSC (every other medical officer job that doesn't fit into the other compcats). We have certain command jobs earmarked for each corps, so MSC always gets X number of sq and gp command slots and doesn't have to worry about the nurses, etc stealing our slots. We compete for promotion against other MSCs, nurses against other nurses, etc. Reason for that is we're all too different to fairly judge across career fields.

Beerman, I know you've been here for a while and your comments are usually spot on, I guess we just see things differently.

I am not looking for "epic job satisfaction", I joined to serve my country and I know that comes with sacrifice, but I can tell you what I have been doing and the pace I've been doing it at it for the past five years has very little satisfaction. It was not hyperbole to say my 15th deployment and the 1:1 bog dwell for years on end has taken a toll on my family. I am sure others have been working just as hard and I can keep running at this pace, but it is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when you see a double standard with some of our leaders.

As for the footnote, I was serious, I am not sport bitching just because my community is having a tough time. Look around, 750 Eagles to 189 Raptors, the F-35 will never be purchased in they numbers we want, our overall fighter numbers are at an all time low and going lower, TAMI 21, VSP X 2, a nuclear enterprise that can't stay out of the news, a nuclear enterprise that is old and worn out, general officers getting plastered in Moscow, a broken CSAR fleet, 60 year old tankers, sexual assault in the news every other week, Force Shaping to pay for more F-35s, our shit is broken and worn out and we are replacing about 1/3 of what we have. Our adversaries are investing and while they may not be there yet, they are building fast. So yes, at the current rate I think we are in trouble.

As for the airlines, flying the 320 from Newark to Chicago does not sound like a life fulfilling adventure, but I can't see doing what I have been for the next 12 years.

We'll always be the best Air Force, because we outspend the enemy 10 or 100 to 1. We're definitely not the best air force per capita or per dollar spent.

We're also the best because we train the best. Hold on, breaking news. More FHP cuts?

This is probably the standard commander's thought process when someone has the audacity to not give 40 years of their life to bah gawd the most wonderful job in the history of mankind. It's as if people get downright offended that someone doesn't want to be exactly like them.

Reverse OODA loop. Decide, Act, Observe and Orient. By the time the process is complete we can't remember the lessons we learned ie: Pilots are going to drop papers, pilots want out, its like there is no binder on the A1 shelf that says "2011 VSP/RIF Continuity."

We're the best because when push comes to shove we can kill people, and break things better than most other Air Forces due to superior technology, resources and training.

There is a theory about service before self, I am actually borrowing it from a buddy, in short, it was convenient to switch the model from "sorry about xyz assignment, it is the needs of the Air Force." In this situation the Air Force was both the cause and effect of a less than desirable duty assignment. Haul in "service before self," and the Air Force can effectively hand you something you don't like while smiling and telling you how great it is and acting like you are delusional when you don't like it. In the end, the person is the cause and effect of a crappy deal. I have to believe that in the beginning "service before self" was intended to provide MOTIVATION to our institution not as a means to CONVICT each other.

This is amazing to me.

I knew early that I would have a hard time sticking it out so I started looking for a guard unit soon after arriving to EGUN. My wife ended up as a bowling partner with the wing king's wife, so I had the nervous and awkward privilege of having bowling alley's best lunch specials with them. After a few of these, and deciding that the guy was pretty straight up, I made an apt to see him. I was shaking in my bag. Figured I was ending my career before it had started. He listened to my story and my request for a recommendation. When I was done he shook my hand and told me how pleased he was that I was going to continue my service in the guard, and total force (never heard of it) and he's going to do everything in his power to help. I got a draft rec letter from him that made me want to cry. It was awesome.

Three weeks later, they closed PC. The guy never fed me the 'service before self' line. Even said he and his wife had seriously considered leaving at one point. I never saw any retaliation or blowback from the visit. I still have the letter. You might say he was just feeding it to me, and if he were a lesser man I'd agree.

Fast forward five years and I received a hand written note apologizing for not being able to attend my WIC grad, but that he was happy to see I'd ridden it out so far. He was a BGen at that point.

FWIW, I found the slideshow at the link below on how Netflix manages its culture. Its long, but worth a read. Slides 26, 27, 35, 40-58, 67-68, 117, 121-123 are definitely worth a look. I doubt the AF could explain and defend what we do half as well.
