  1. I may have to post a question on the web site. "Do I have to complete my separation before volunteering for the Return to Active Duty Program?" Actually, if I succeed in getting a job in the ANG/AFR, I will not be coming back voluntarily.
  2. Regarding the waiver process, A person I trust at AFPC (Very short list) told me that 12Xs are on the critically manned list in the reserves and are eligible for bonuses in some cases. Supposedly, they are going to provide a blanket waiver for twice passed over dudes on this board looking to transition to the Guard or Reserves. I don't know if that will continue to be the case as the ANG/AFR will have a limit to how many guys they can absorb. The good news is that there are still plenty of options at the moment. PM me if you want additional details.
  3. Best REMF/Shoe BFM of the day. Next year the reg will specify a maximum number of hats one can have on his/her person. I know you guys have seen A-10s with a "canopy" painted on the underside so you can't tell which way he is turning. Maybe we can start painting half a flight cap on the right leg of everybodys flight suits.
  4. Somebody has to stay in. As for having a job, you should at least have something that looks pretty solid before you pull the handles. I've seen cases and others on this forum have stories of guys who got out thinking that a job would magically appear (airlines, Reserves, start a business...) and it didn't. Look around and get smart on your options before you start your separation paperwork.
  5. While I haven't heard of any large reductions, there is always the local ebb and flow in manning. One Colorado unit I talked to said they had recently been turned into an associate unit and lost a chunk of their navigator manning. Other units are in the process of shuffling slots to deal with retirements, promotions and other horse trading. Most of my prior experience has been with the Guard so I'm not very familiar with how it works in the Reserves, but most units will find a way. I've seen more than one squadron use a new hire's time in training to find a slot.
  6. I've talked to both ANG and AFR in three different states. I've also been talking to the ANG recruiter in the local area. No one has ever mentioned a hiring freeze, either current or impending. If I hear otherwise, I'll be the first to let everyone know.
  7. As a bomber nav I am OFFENDED.... that somebody took down the sign. Nellis has ALWAYS been home of the fighter pilot. Fuck sensitivity. Let the people who need a hug have their own base and label it "Home of the whiners." Make it an AETC base, or maybe the Academy.
  8. That article is chock o block full of WTF quotes. How would you like to be part of THAT class. "Well, we've determined that this course adds no value, but we can't stop the bureaucracy on a dime, so you all still have to attend. See you in 4 years for the extended SOS" This program is so awesome we are going to cancel it. Wait, what? Because we totally think that the material we used on brand new 2LTs will still be relevant for mid-grade Captains.
  9. Without belaboring the point, I think a lot of people here FENCEd in and had their eyes out for the threat. How do you defend against a liberated high pressure turbine blade though? The shit that is coming apart is internal. Then again, some aspects of the current manpower situation resemble having two call pit bull when you are out in front.
  10. The people not being continued were up for their first look APZ for Lt Col. One look in the zone and one above makes two times deferred. break, break For those who have expressed frustration with this policy, I found another outlet yesterday. Send an email to the Air Force Association. They generally push back when the Air Force does something short sighted and this definitely seems to fit. AFA is an advocacy organization, maybe they will take up the cause.
  11. After initial attempts at surrendering to the building failed, the Captain demanded an apology from the building for pulling in front of his aircraft. Deny, deny, deny, make counter accusations, demand an apology.
  12. I agree with the guys who have said that the decision made on this board will have consequences the manpower people probably were not factoring in. They made a quick decision to cut a group of Majors. They don't understand how that will ripple through guys who have been passed over and Captains reaching the end of their commitment. I suspect the first indicator that will scare the shit out of AFPC will be a sharp reduction in the take rate for the bonus. Most guys were willing to try their luck for Lt Col and maybe retire as a Maj. Getting kicked out with 1 years pay at the 15 year point isn't worth it.
  13. Here it is, hot off the presses. Instructions to the FY11 LAF Lt Col promotion board. For those interested in the continuation process, skip to page 4. It appears that anyone on a normal path through the AF without prior enlisted time ran afoul of the following direction Since this was the 96 year group, we all hit 5 years to retirement at some point in 2011. The board was held beginning on 7 March. I guess anyone who was commissioned before 7 Mar in 1996 got lucky. LTC board instructions.pdf
  14. This is the verbatim guidance provided to those selected for non-continuation. From my prior time in the Guard, I've seen people with serious career problems make the jump to the Guard and continue to move up. I'm not sure if this request for a waiver is a formality or if this is a further attempt to stick it to the folks being forced out this year.
  15. Dude, I have some bad news for you. Google Keisha Bikini. Its not good.
  16. They left of the last half of the sentence, which read,"provided we can hook together enough AA batteries to get the missile started."
  17. Damn, then I guess this won't work. I was on the way back from another TDY and saw this in the Sky Mall catalog. I thought it would be the perfect accessory for an "Undisclosed Location." Its made for bikes, but could work as a bandoleer/belt. https://www.skymall.com/shopping/detail.htm?pid=203679009&c=10811&v=&ruleId=929,934&cm_sp=Recommend-_-YMAL-_-ProductPage
  18. Yeah, and if you only squeeze the front brakes, the plane flips over.
  19. The Apathy Party will be holding their convention in May June July aw fuckit.
  20. Walk and chew bubblegum? Is that an EP for you? I've seen students who didn't multi-task well, but I think it is safe to say that the head of the US govt gets help making more than one thing happen at a time.
  21. I have no disagreement with the statements above. I have a few additional comments though. 1) I don't know how it is now, but when I was at Dyess, WSOs were picking up fewer alpha tours than co-pilots. If you get to Instructor school ASAP, that opens up the potential for DT, OT and Weapons School. I did a tour in OT at the 337th and applied to TPS, but didn't make the cut. 2) OT at the 337th rocks. You write the test plans to identify what features you want to wring out. I got to drop live versions of just about everything in the B-1 inventory (didn't get to drop CBU-87/102). There were frequent opportunities to fly with DT in combined DT/OT tests. You get to know the guys at Edwards, and you have a huge impact on future changes to the airframe/community. PM me if you have any specific questions. I'll be at Dyess starting in July and up North this Fall.
  22. Your engine gets really, really cold and then blows up like a bomb when you add LOX to the combustion process. I talked to a maintainer who laughed about watching the day they were purging a big container of LOX to clean it or make repairs. The result was a large cloud of oxygen floating away from the tank and across the road. Along comes a deuce and a half hauling a heavy load with the engine working at high RPM. The truck got to a point abeam the tanks and the engine suddenly revved out of limits and blew up. The driver had no idea what the fuck happened.
  23. Every airframe seems to have their own way to say the same thing. MSOGS on the B-1 is the Molecular Sieve Oxygen Generation System. It sucks bleed air through a zeolyte bed which soaks up much of the Nitrogen. The gas that comes out is around 80-90% O2. OBOGS is just Onboard Oxygen Generation System. Don't know if the chemistry behind the system in other jets is different.
  24. Twenty years ago, the buzz word was "Look down/shoot down". Could these guys just put on a set of Dave Clarks and cruise around below 10k doing Look up/shoot up? New defense against the F-22: initiate a rapid climb up to Class A airspace.
  25. If it was on Google Maps, why did it take so long to find him? My wife said that jokingly and I almost spit my coffee out.
