  1. They updated with some high-res pictures...holy crap we have dismantled a great air force. 500 F-16's, 200 F-15's, 20 B-1's, A lot of Old B-52's and F-4's...kind of sad to look at.

  3. Very few O-6's have real power to affect change. Sitting wing commanders have some leeway, but the average O-6 can not. If I am ever in position, I will do whatever I can to make a difference. With the information I gained from this site I've done several things... #1. I have provided honest, candid, often painful feedback to the senior folks I know. #2. I made a promise to mentor those I think can carry the ball further down the field and make a difference...and I have honored that promise with several folks, some on this very site.

They'll strip names off the inputs, then pass them to me, unedited. I'm looking for the ground truth as you see it, not the filtered, watered-down "this is what the boss wants to hear" truth. Once I've seen it all, I'll give you some feedback...including what I plan to do with the info. Almost two months later and crickets...

  6. My SDE expedience had nothing to do with reinforcing my leadership style. In fact, they did an anonymous survey of my past supervisors and the members and blended that with a 600 question psychological evaluation to help identify what type of leader I am and how to improve. We spent a lot of time study economics as an instrument of foreign and domestic policy and had the opportunity to discuss our current situation with Nobel Laureates economists from many competing disciplines such as Keynesian, Classical, Monetarist, and Neoclassical. I even got to stand in uniform on the floor of the NYSE for the opening bell (the traders gave us a standing ovation when we walked in). We spent the majority of our time studying strategy failures and success and tried to pull lessons from the past, however the most important lesson I learned was that there is no one book that provides a solution, especially to today's situations. Instead, I was taught a methodology to think through strategic problems and hopefully develop potential solutions. For me the SDE experience was really about access...I was in a very small venue so we met and discussed issues with SECDEF, all of the service chiefs, A Supreme Court Justice, most of the COCOM/CC's, Under Secretaries of Defense, DASD's, think tanks, famous authors (who both praised and attacked the military...including Tom Ricks), former senior officers including Gen Pace, Gen Zinni, ambassadors, The head of JP Morgan, the CEO of Deutsche Bank, industry captains, venture capitalists, and a host of other influential folks. Not once did I ever hear the words reflective belt, short socks, tall socks, or PT Gear. I did hear every service chief express concern for people. If there is a root cause for all the queep it stems from the fact that we senselessly and needlessly lose so many fine young service men and women every day and leadership overreacts as a result of what they see. I am not defending it, but at this point in my career I think I understand it. Tom Ricks is a blow hard who truly has not a clue. He loves the ground game and academic freedom prevents me from sharing his view of the Air Force...but I have zero respect for that close-minded idiot. As a lucky person who has done every level of PME in residence, I would most certainly make changes to PME if I had the opportunity, but the core is there, it just needs some tweaking.
  7. Way off...USMC sends their tops dudes to ISE/ASG/SDE. It is the Navy that does not value PME for its fast burners. I had a guy (Helo driver), in my SDE class who never commanded, knew he would not command, and applied for retirement eight months after he graduated. The other Navy guy (Surface Officer), pinned O-5 on a few weeks after class started, had never commanded and did not make the cut his first look. The rationale for taking guys out of the fight and sending them to school for a year is not to take a year off, it is supposed to be to build strategic thinkers who can shape the fight at the next level (did not work in my case, I are too dumb).

  12. I previously closed the thread because the non-continuation has been discussed before on this site and I thought it was common knowledge. I’ve been asked to open the thread back up and I’ve done so while cleaning out the chaff. We will try to keep the noise at an acceptable level and discuss how this is going to affect everyone and the rated force. We all know there is a projected shortage of 250 fighter pilots by the end of the year, growing to 1,000 over the next three (I think it will be higher if the economy recovers). The latest promotion stats for the just released O-5 board. Some clarification from the experts, is continuation offered on a year to year basis? The IPZ selection rate for Pilots was 74.7% - 327selected out of 438 considered, 111 not selected. The IPZ selection rate for Navs was 77.1% - 84 selected out of 109 considered, 25 not selected. The APZ selection rate was Pilots was .9% - 5 selected out of 539 considered, 534 not selected. The APZ selection rate was Navs was 1.2% - 2 selected out of 173 considered, 171 not selected. The APZ numbers are a bit skewed because many are folks who are multiple times passed over serving on continuation to 20. If continuation is offered year to year and the policy has changed, then we would have a large numbers of folks who will be separating in the near future.

  18. They did and our enlisted folks died at a rate over 10% higher than the general population, our officers were on par with the average. I also saw some AMAZING statistics on our force reference the quality of people coming into the Air Force...not to bore you with a details, but USAF folks are scoring in the upper 90% of all ASVAB scores, The Navy was in the lower 80's, the Army and USMC were in the 60's. In short, we have the choice of the best folks coming into the services these days by a WIDE margins and the majority of enlisted folks coming in the USAF these days would easily qualify for college. Based on what I saw today I think there could be a large negative impact to cutting TA.
  19. Completely unsupportable...that would push a huge bill to present day and the actuaries would probably consider it a bad bet. I saw a VERY interesting statistic a few years ago about the average life expectancy of retired enlisted folks who smoke...As I recall retired enlisted members who smoked had on average only collected 12 years of pension before they died. While military folks tend to be more healthy in their youth, they use tobacco at a rate twice that of the general population and tend to die at a much higher rate. Another factor is the military health care system and the fact that patients and doctors are reassigned frequently and continuity of care can suffer compared to what other groups experience. Another study found that those who retire from active duty die much sooner than those who served as reservists...In particular the death rate for active duty enlisted retirees is 20 to 25 percent higher than for reserve enlisted retirees. I guess I should have gone guard.
