BLUF: Is it worth completing ACSC before separating AD and going to the Guard? I'll be leaving AD for an instructor pilot ART position later this year, and I have a line number for Major. Is it worth the effort to try and knock out ACSC before I switch over? I hope to eventually get an AGR position with the unit, so I plan on being in place for a while once I get there. Is it smarter to get it done now, or wait until later? Or is it even worth completing at all at this point? As far as career aspirations, I'm not exactly motivated by obtaining a senior leadership position, and the airlines aren't really an option (RPA). Thanks for any feedback!

I need some help here. I've been trying for a long time to figure out how to transfer from the active Army to the USAF Reserves or National Guard. I've already taken the AFOQT and TBAS and got great scores. Here is the background. I have two kids in EFMP. I need to relocate to a place closer to family but I do not want to give up on the military. I already have 10 years in. I'm currently a commissioned Army pilot. I am a pilot at heart and that is what I'm going to do for the rest of my life. The problem is that my kids need stability and they need to be near family. It's getting to the point where the marriage will suffer. I have read into the regulations and i…

Hey Everyone, There's a wealth of information on this forum but unfortunately this question hasn't been specifically addressed: what is the timeline for someone transitioning off of active duty to get hired at a Guard/Reserve unit for UPT? How far out will the hire someone or hold a slot (I realize mileage may vary depending on the unit)? I'll turn 29 in November 2018. My service commitment ends mid-March 2019 (I can take 60 days of terminal leave mid-January if that matters). That means I'll need to go OTS + UPT without age waivers all in about 8 months ... pretty tight timeline. I've read about the ANG being more flexible with age and stories about Army rotary-wing guys…

Is anybody familiar with the paperwork process for an active duty guy to fill a spot at a guard unit while still on active duty? I know some active guys have snagged a three-ish year assignment to the guard before... Just curious. Thanks in advance. Cheers

I have a few question regarding applying as an older dude. I'm currently an active duty CSO 34 years old with 13 years in. I have 3000+ hours in the MC-130 and I just recently applied to the active duty UPT board which required both an age and TFCSD waiver (which both were approved). I was unfortunately not selected for UPT (no shocker there) but was selected for RPA. If I decline RPA and apply to UPT from a guard unit will that prevent me from being picked up? Also any advice going forward with trying to get picked up for a UPT slot? Current scores are AFOQT pilot 94, PCSM 85 (will go to 89 after I update my hours), 48 civ hours with PPL check ride scheduled for the 24th…

I apologize if this has been asked before, I did a search and couldn’t find anything. Is it possible to go from Active Duty to ANG UPT while I still have time left on my contract? Is something like this treated as a palace chase? I’ve done a little research and couldn’t find anything about it.

Hello, I'm currently an active duty maintainer aiming to get a pilot slot with an air national guard or reserve unit, preferably one at the current base I'm at or in my home state. I already enlisted with a bachelors degree and I'm currently pursuing a PPL at local flight school near my base with the money I'm earning and saving up. I'm also planning on scheduling the AFOQT and TBAS soon. I've almost hit the one year mark of my four year contract and turning 24 this year so I want to begin putting together my OTS package. Should I try to palace chase then apply for slots or finish my contract and then apply? I'll be 27 by the time I'm finished with my enlistment which is …

Greetings All, I am an active duty Marine Corps officer who is looking to applying for a UPT slot in the Air Force Reserves. I just wanted to gauge how someone like myself has a chance of being selected for a UPT slot. My recruiter stated that obtaining an age waiver (ETP) is just a matter of paperwork and should not be a showstopper. Below is my brief stat: Rank: O-3 Commissioned Service Time: 7 years Active Duty Time: 5.5 years Age: 30 MOS: non-rated Flight Experience: PPL (Airplane-SEL) AFOQT: Pilot 89, Nav 71, Acad 33, Verb 27 (no clue what happened..), Quant 45 PCSM: 93

Sorry if this topic has already been discussed, I can't find a thread about it. If you go through a civilian AD hiring board, my understanding is you must go to OTS first before going to your MFS at WP. Obviously because of my age (I'm pushing 33), I am applying to this upcoming AD board. The deadline is Sep. 12. Are you able to secure your IFC1/MFS through AD and hypothetically keep rushing guard/reserve units and get hired by them? Or are you blood sealed to AD at that point?

So let me start off by saying that I am currently an Active Duty 0-2, and all i want to do is fly. I have close to 4 years in and with another 1.5 years left on my ADSC. 26 yrs old and no medical conditions. I have applied for the 2019 AD UFT board with hopes of getting picked up. During this process, almost all of the pilots whom I work with were telling me about applying to become guard. From what i hear the OPS tempo is much more chill, UPT is less stressful (know what platform already), and the Qweep (additional duties outside of flying) are negligible compared to AD side (Biggest upside according to them). From their advice i am now looking to apply to some units clo…

Hey guys/gals, Thanks for taking some time to review my situation and offer inputs.. much appreciated: - I am a 6-yr Air Force Capt in a HD/LD SOF career field looking to apply to ANG UPT positions (anyone that will take a look at me, but ideally fighters) - I can separate in late 2018 (at 29 yo), but will be within 3-4 months of turning age 30 at that time - Thanks to some help from medical contacts, I'm approved for a FC1 physical (albeit with a couple medical waivers for eye issues) Some of the hurdles I'm tracking.... - Will likely need a prior commissioned service waiver as well as an age waiver IF (big if) I am hired - I hav…

I've submitted my application to AD Upt board (I'm a newly minted Capt) already, but today an AFRC Col I didn't know kidnapped me after a meeting and told me he heard I was applying for the AD board and I "must" apply for the AFRC flying unit at my base. I hadn't thought much about going reserves to fly, but he made a pretty damn good argument for it. I have a competitive package with good scores and no waivers. Any wise Greybeard advice on this? I don't have enough flight experience to know what I want to fly, but I love the mission and figured being in a cockpit is the best way to go.

So I have a package in with the AD Officer board and I really want to chase the manned pilot position but am not sure I can lock down pilot. If allowable, I would decline any other position and press for an ANG unit (wouldn't be eligible for AFRC). Guard has been becoming more and more appealing to me. I have a couple of questions: 1) Is it worth it to go for an instrument / multi rating? (I already have my PPL) 2) How much did your PCSM help in an interview? (99 PSCM, 98 Pilot) 3) I will be putting on 0-2 in June (2 of 4 yr commitment finished) and am curious how the timeline works going from AD to Guard. Can I even apply to current slots? How would it cur…

So, my local AFRC has not been much help because I thought going AD to guard made you eligible for TAMP? I thought a briefer in my TAPS class said I was, but that was five months ago, and I found this is the quote straight from the Tricare website: "Separating from regular active duty service and agree to become a member of the Selected Reserve of a Reserve Component. The Service member must become a Selected Reservist the day immediately following release from regular active duty service to qualify. " However, the main AFRC TAPS guy had me reference a three letter code on my sep orders, which he told me that it indicated I was not eligible. Is this three let…

Current UPT student set to graduate T-6s in near future. With fighter drops out of T-38 becoming few and far between for AD guys/gals, I was curious what options/if any exist to get picked up by ANG/AFRC unit. I have seen prior postings for units listed as “UPT” and other for “Rated only.” I am curious if any ANG/AFRC units view a soon to be UPT grad as worth investment in speeding up the hiring timeline and could pseudo fill those “rated” slots because of the more aggressive timeline? Does such a thing exist? I still have a 10 year service commitment but not sure if that could be moved to service in the guard or reserves. Thanks in advance for any and all advice! …

Currently coming up on 10 yrs active duty as a B1 WSO. Looking for a change so looking at C-130 posit in ANG for ability to move family closer to home (East coast) among other reasons. Definitely have some questions though. First, if I have 23 months of ADSC left due to signing GI bill over to my kid, so I think I would have to Palace Chase. I figure this is likely in this era of force mgmt but who knows. What's the first step though? Second, or maybe most most importantly, what are the best reasons to go ANG? I mean, I am pursuing for location and a change, but what else makes people so happy about ANG? Seems simple but I just don't know. Is there a commitment to…

I'm interested to hear thoughts on what might be the most effective way to demonstrate that my current character isn't indicative of my past mistakes. I intend to fully disclose my past legal troubles (2 separate underage drinking incidents when 18 and 20) on the AF Form 24 and to any who ask. I promptly did as I was instructed by the court without any issues (Community service and alcohol/abuse class) and put those incidents behind as lessons learned. I'm just hoping to get a chance to explain myself to the boards before I'm dismissed as an applicant because of those blemishes. I've graduated from a large university with a 3.5 GPA, hold a PPL, have volunteer experie…

As an AF CAT B Reservist (IMA), is it relatively easy to transfer to another Det? Is it still a 1288 driven process? Any tips, advice, or POCs appreciated? Thank you all!

So I heard rumors that the Reserves have or are pushing the max age limit without a waiver to 35. Does anyone know if there is any truth in this, possibly with some supporting documentation?

Hi guys, I'm 20yrs old, 2nd year of college and I want to become a pilot but am not sure which route to take. I have the opportunity to attend AFROTC as a cross town student and take extra classes to catch up since I would have already missed my first year. I do understand that pilot slots are very competitive in ROTC, and that coming in as an AS250, I would have to be sharp in order to have a good RSS (Relative Standing Score) since the commander would have a shorter time to get to know me. A couple weeks ago, I spoke to an air force C-17 pilot (reserves), he made me realize that perhaps the Air Force Reserves was a better option for me since I would be able to f…

I’m an AD 11M at CHS. I have a troop that is interested in applying for OTS. They cancelled the rated boards thru 2023 from what he’s heard. He’s now exploring the Reserves. Is the AFOQT required for Reserves and if hired, how long should he expect full time orders? TIA

Bros, I went for an interview several months ago,I felt I did very well, and got great feedback, the biggest thing being I need to get better scores. I totally got destroyed by the math and admittedly, I should have studied a lot harder and I am looking to do some major self improvement. I'm already an Army pilot and I feel a little bad posting this because I don't want to make us all look bad. ive got a couple of the books, and am looking to get some math tutoring on the side using the books as a guide to what I should study. Are there any courses or AFOQT reviews that AFROTC guys go to or that you guys recommend? I have one shot left and I want to get…

Sorry if this is being asked in the wrong forum, or has been previously asked Does anyone know if there are any test centers that are still conducting testing? I was scheduled for a retest and unfortunately, it was cancelled due to covid. Some of the units I wanted to apply to, said they would not accept score updates, post deadlines. Do you guys know any testing centers that are still operating? from what I understand it' shut down system wide, which sucks as it's the last thing I need to get done.

So board deadline is out; May 31st. Seems like we'll all have plenty of time before submitting, right?....wrong? Thanks to the FCI base change to Wright Patterson. Seeing where everyone stands and who will be submitting to this board along with myself. Heard a few people already received FCI dates at Wright Patt for April 25.
