Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by HeyEng,

Way back in 2014 I got an AD retirement after I accumulated 7200 points, I spent most of my time the Reserves but the last two years were in the Guard. The freckled faced SRA who man MPF at most bases these days was not really up on AD retirements and could not answer a lot of questions I and others had on getting an AD retirement. It was at the height of the DTS and Roll-Back fiascos so I was just happy to get a check every month and be on my merry way. A few days ago I got a call from an squadron mate who is still in and will also get an AD retirement, he asked me if he would also get the Reserve retirement after reaching age 60 (or the Roll-Back age). I v…

  2. I’m gonna be moving to the DFW area when I separate from AD this year. I’ll be going airlines for my civilian job, but thought I’d try something less-traditional and see if anyone here has experience/advice on how to go about finding a part time, non-flying position at a local unit? I’ve looked on the reserve vacancies list on vMPF but can’t seem to find anything useful or informative. I’m aware of the ALO gig, but want something to fall back on that pays should Isom not cut the mustard at American in the next few years… Any advice would be much appreciated!

  3. Asking in regards to heavies. After going on drill status, what’s the longest amount of time you can regularly be away from the squadron? Is a month on/month off schedule (or 2 weeks on/off like ACME) possible? Not trying to game the system for BAH or anything, but if this sort of schedule was possible it would allow much greater freedom of living location. Thanks!

Is it necessary to submit ALL active duty orders/DD214 from an individuals career to VPC in order to view/receive the reduced retirement?

I'm an ART going on a centrally funded (RPA from AFRC) TDY (on the other side of the country) for ~160 days. I would like to drive, so I would have my car to use at the TDY location. However, I am being told that I only get one travel day because I have to travel via commerical air. I have scoured the JFTR and I can not find a way around this. Per the JFTR, the AO can designate a mode of travel that is most advantageous to the government, in this case commercial air, and the member, again per the JFTR, only gets one travel day. Does anyone have any experience in a similar situation? I would really want to have a car at my TDY location for obvious reason (getti…

  6. Started by NABO,

Hi all, I'm looking for some detail on the "type" of orders that would come with the 3-4 years of pilot training + seasoning in a guard unit. I'm a guard off the street hire anticipating starting the OTS/UPT pipeline next year. I'm currently in the process of switching civilian jobs in the meantime, and am reviewing prospective opportunities. As one would expect, I'm looking at applicable military leave policies as well. The company I plan to sign on with provides paid military leave for employees that are "deployed for an active duty tour for a declared military action (to include Homeland Defense)." This is what leads to me to the above query, as all I kn…

I'm a prior service active duty U.S. Army Aviation CPT RC-12/C-12 driver and current part-time Army National Guard CW2 C-12 IP/IFE/MTP. I fly ISR King Airs as a DoD Contractor overseas on a 60 on/60 off rotating schedule for my full time job and live in Vermont. Looking to cross over into the Blue to get my commission back and finish up the remainder of my military drilling career in the ANG. If possible, I'd like to chat with someone in the know about the 152nd AOG or flying MQ-9 RPAs in the 174th Attack Wing (NYANG). I have lots of prior CAOC, LNO, staff officer and overseas ISR piloting experience. I've tried both e-mailing and calling an ANG recruiter, but haven'…

  8. Hello to all. First off thanks to all of those on here who share a plethora of helpful information, it's truly helpful to someone on the outside of this community looking for a way into it. Before I ask this question, I have used the search function, google, and a bunch of other resources and still can't find this answer.... Is it possible for someone to become an RPA pilot in the ANG/AFR and then apply to an ANG/AFR unit in hopes of getting a pilot slot after serving time in an RPA unit? (I believe from this forum the minimum is 2.5 year commitment). I can't find any info what so ever so any helpful answers are sincerely appreciated. -RANDOMDUDE

Looking into some options for the future and wondering if anybody on here has any insight into the 133d vs 934th in Minneapolis. Things like either one going Js, future of both units, culture in either unit. Anything would be helpful.

  11. Hey all, Couldn't find an existing topic that covers the question, but I'm sure I'm not the first and only one who's ever wondered it. I also will say up front that I'm sure the chances are slim if they exist. Long story short, I was a UPT stud, dot med DQed, went non-rated, got a waiver, re-applied, got denied to crosstrain by my CFM (didn't think that would be possible, but I digress). At this point I'm set up to attend a program with a new ADSC commitment for my next assignment, and I'll be about a mid-grade Captain by the time I can get out. What I'm wondering is - is it possible, have you ever heard of anyone etc. rushing a guard or reserve fighter squ…

  13. Started by FitTriGuy,

I am currently at UPT and we had someone on active duty get hurt and have to be pushed back a few classes until they healed and could get off DNF. It got me thinking, as a guard guy,u how something like that would affect me if I got on a long term DNF status. Would my orders be suspended until I healed? If so, how would that affect my access to medical treatment and TriCare? Obviously I'm new to the guard and flying so any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

Looking for information from someone who has left the regular reserves (TR or IMA) and transferred to the IRR. I am looking to transfer, and then soon after get picked up by the PIRR (already have an ALO position worked out but waiting for the paperwork to go through)...but I want to transfer now. What happens when you transfer to the IRR without a job lined up already? Is this when you get the dreaded “break in service” and lose your date of rank? Are you medical records sent away to get lost in a storage facility to then need to be found and shipped back to your next unit? Do you immediately lose your security clearance? CAC card? Do you s…

  15. Started by Uptapplicant2019,

I've submitted my application to AD Upt board (I'm a newly minted Capt) already, but today an AFRC Col I didn't know kidnapped me after a meeting and told me he heard I was applying for the AD board and I "must" apply for the AFRC flying unit at my base. I hadn't thought much about going reserves to fly, but he made a pretty damn good argument for it. I have a competitive package with good scores and no waivers. Any wise Greybeard advice on this? I don't have enough flight experience to know what I want to fly, but I love the mission and figured being in a cockpit is the best way to go.

  16. I am looking to contact the 122nd squadron (the New Orleans F-15 folks) to learn more about what they are looking for. However, when I went on their website (159th Fighter Wing) and called the number in the contact us page, I just went to the webmaster's voicemail. If someone could give me some direction on how to go about this, it would be much appreciated. I know talking to and meeting with the squad is very important to increase your chances as a candidate. Any response is welcome, I don't have many people around me who know much about the ANG and I've been trying to figure this out for a while.

We are slated to receive the KC-46 in early 2018, so if you are interested in being a part of the transition, let us know! 18. If this is in the wrong forum feel free to move it. I just wanted to get some opinions. I am prior service ANG and have been invited to 4 interviews this year at cargo units and one with the 106th Rescue Wing, but haven't received any invites for FW's yet. I have the option to switch to a local Army National Guard unit and fly the LUH-72 Lakota's or HH-60's. I just turned 28 and I am trying to weigh the pro's and con's of switching services. Anyone familiar with the process or have any input? Anyone know of any units (other than the 104fw and those on the Guardreservejobs website) still accepting packets?

First off, I want to say thanks to everyone whom has contributed to this forum. Awesome resource. Second, hoping for a little help/guidance. Background: Currently a CW2 in the ARNG with 800 hours in the UH-60, (PC/AMC) looking to make the transfer to AF Reserves/ANG. I want to stay Rotary Wing; on my last deployment I did some MEDEVAC chase stuff, really enjoyed the mission. Right now I work as a Faculty Research Engineer in Ga. Have an undergrad in Mech Engineering, grad in Aeronautics, starting PhD in Mech Engineering in 2019 at the University I work for (I can defer if needed). I spoke to a reserve recruiter, basically told me to pound sand. The ANG recruiter told me m…

This article details the USAF's recent decision to give the 127th 12 KC-46's. What are your thoughts on the 107th losing their fighter mission once the A-10 is divested. It seems like a Michigan based fighter mission has been on the chopping block for several decades now. https://www.airforcetimes.com/news/your-air-force/2024/01/12/selfridge-air-national-guard-base-picked-to-host-kc-46-squadron/

I'm looking for some info on possibly joining a local ANG wing. I've got 11 1/2 years in the Army National Guard. I'm currently a 2LT (I was a CW2 and I Direct Commissioned last year) qualified in the UH-60 A/L/M as well as the C-12V. I've done one deployment in the C-12 and have about 540 hrs FW and another 525 RW. I'm a PC/AMC in the UH-60. I've been an Army technician for about 7 1/2 years. For the last 4 years I've been working a tech job that isn't flying as a GS-11, eventually hoping to move to a GS-12 or 13 flying position. Over the past 2 years I've applied for several jobs both AGR and Tech to move on from my current position. Although I've been told I…
