Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by sartoreabram,

I am 24 years old and plan on applying to both Reserve and ANG heavy units this Spring. I have my bachelors degree with a 3.33 GPA. My AFOQT scores are: P:79, N:73, AA: 79, V: 56, Q:88. My PPL checkride is scheduled for February 14th and currently have roughly 57 hours. I plan to get LOR from my CFI, my Scout Master (Eagle Scout), and a professor from college. I take the TBAS tomorrow and then will receive my PCSM. I know there is not much a way to tell me chances without a PCSM, however, if I do well on the TBAS and receive a good PCSM, is that the main factor considered? Or should I also retake the AFOQT? I know my scores are lower in Pilot and Nav than I would like th…

  2. Hey folks, I'm currently a tanker guy in the reserves, but I was considering an IMA job closer to my house. (My commute is killing me) I was wondering if anyone knew if there was a flying commitment for the USAFR? I have been flying since Oct 2010. I know of the ADSC, but does anything like that apply to the reserves? Does anyone have an AFI reference that I could look up? Thanks for the input. EDIT: I did find the AFRCI 36-2102 that addresses the issue. It does seem that even reservists incur a 10 year flying commitment after they get their wings. My new question is this: can I still look for an IMA job and still inter-fly with my current squa…

Long time lurker on the forums getting ready to separate from AD and applying for airline jobs. The family has made the decision to settle down in Colorado Springs and I'm trying to find a part time reserve/guard gig in Colorado, preferably the Springs but I could commute to Buckley. I'm a mobility pilot, so I'm assuming I would need to find a rated position? I am planning on applying for PC, about 4 months off of my PCS ADSC so a CAT E billet wouldn't work until I paid back my 3 for 1. I'm constantly looking at reserve vacancies on AMS but it sounds like there are a ton of opportunities out there that aren't always posted. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have a…

  4. I am in the process of applying and was wondering if there are any units that specifically want to remain with the F-15 in the future. I realize one can't afford to be picky in applying, so I'm shot gunning apps to any fighter unit I can stand to live at that gives me the best ability to go home and spend time with family. A recent conversation with a pilot in a C unit told me they were indifferent to the -35 or new 15s. I think it would be cool however to fly the jet that was on posters hung in my room growing up, and it may be beneficial to invest more time in visiting those particular units. This thread is not intended to turn into a -35 vs -15 debate, there is a seper…

I understand there used to be a process for this but now everything is coordinated through the 340FTS and things may have changed. Does anybody know how to request a specific base for UPT?

If you had a choice between a Reserve C-130J squadron or KC-46 squadron and location wasn't a factor, what would you choose?

  7. All, just looking for some advice here. I got out of active duty in July 2010. I have been running my own business since then and flying on the side to keep current with and end goal of getting on with a major. I got hired by a regional with a class in June (have a pulse, you are hired) but think I would rather get back into the guard or reserves part time. Also, since I have 10 years in might as well not lose that time and try to get some kind of retirement out of it (if retirements are still around in 10 years) Looking for others who had a 2-3 year break in service who got back in via the guard/reserves. I have a B-52/T-38 background and would probably prefer a AETC p…

Way back in 2014 I got an AD retirement after I accumulated 7200 points, I spent most of my time the Reserves but the last two years were in the Guard. The freckled faced SRA who man MPF at most bases these days was not really up on AD retirements and could not answer a lot of questions I and others had on getting an AD retirement. It was at the height of the DTS and Roll-Back fiascos so I was just happy to get a check every month and be on my merry way. A few days ago I got a call from an squadron mate who is still in and will also get an AD retirement, he asked me if he would also get the Reserve retirement after reaching age 60 (or the Roll-Back age). I v…

  10. I am a former C-130 nav and Army CH-47D pilot. I have been sitting in staff job for the last five years and would like to get back into flying. Since the Fixed Wing Qualification course was cancelled in 2012, I am only limited helicopters in the USAF. Does anyone know about any ANG/Reserve HH-60 units willing to accept out-of-state commuters?

As I learn more about the Air Force as I work my interservice transfer, I'm learning more about AGR. Doesn't seem like a bad deal, or at least more laid back than active. My three questions, 1) Is AGR available to someone directly from active duty that flies a different airframe? I.e., does the unit hire someone and then put them through advanced airframe training if they aren't already qualified, or do they tend to want someone already qualified? 2) For the AGR positions, do they tend to hire from within over finding someone outside of the unit? Or do they expect someone to affiliate as a regular guardsman and then pick up AGR orders? 3) If you cross …

Anybody know anything about PV promotions in the reserve. Looking at stats it's <20% to O-5 for IMAs (lower than the other line categories). What's the gouge on how to be competitive? I mean, besides PME. Does a guy with lots extended AD have a better shot than a part-timer? Do higher-level positions have better luck than lower (HAF vs Wg for example)? Just curious. Lot's of sites have the regulatory info, but I can find any analysis. As an IMA it's not like I have a unit to go ask either. Thanks in advance.

  13. What typically happens in the gaps between OTS, UPT, survival, and any other phases of training? Are you on casual status collecting a pay check while at home, or something else?

So I'm an enlisted reservist out of Nellis and started talking to the helicopter rescue unit at Patrick about putting a pilot package in next year. I live in Florida roughly an hour from the base and commute to Nellis for drill because I like my job and the unit. My Chief told me today I can do a drill weekend with that unit on orders which is great. I'd be in uniform as a SSgt. That being said do any of you see a problem with me hanging out with the pilots if I'm in uniform? Thoughts?

Wondering a bit about what career opportunities get closed if you go Guard rather than Active Duty. Are some of the items below still possible if you are in the Guard? - Exchange tour (Navy or foreign) - Test Pilot School - Thunderbirds/Demo Team - Overseas assignment (Europe, Korea, Japan) - Pentagon assignment One of the drawbacks I see to the Guard is being based out of the same place and doing the same thing for 20 years. Is being interested in some of the items above enough to consider Active Duty over the Guard?

Does anyone has the Form 2030 that I can download from? I cannot view the PDF file on the www.e-publishing.af.mil website. I found PDF version of the form on other website, but it is not the 2017 version, which I think is the latest. Also, do I sign the form right away or wait until selected for the interview and sign it there, since my witness has no "Grade of Witness"? I appreciate any help or advice. Thank you.

  19. Greetings all. Long story short, I'm an A1C from the MTANG, currently at Sheppard going through tech school in the 2A6x4 career field. I wrote a longer post about my background a couple months ago before BMT ( thread linked for those who care to look ) , so this is a sort of follow on. As the title implies, I'd like to know how early is too early to start visiting the units I want to apply to in the future. Once I finish tech school I'll have somewhere between 84 and 90 overall college credits (I have to speak to the education office and the college I'm going to be starting at to figure out how many will actually be counted). But after my MEST day…

For anyone here who left for UPT training holding only a PPL or similar, what were your civilian ratings / job opportunities afterward returning home and going part time status? From what I read online, it sounds like commercial and instrument ratings are awarded after an FAA proficiency test. I'd love to hear how many hours you all came home with after UPT, air frame training, and seasoning orders. All PIC time? What jobs were available with your experience level? I understand this will vary greatly between aircraft, and even down to the individual unit but I'd like to start a conversation and hear from anyone willing to share. For context, I am applying to units an…

I'm an ART going on a centrally funded (RPA from AFRC) TDY (on the other side of the country) for ~160 days. I would like to drive, so I would have my car to use at the TDY location. However, I am being told that I only get one travel day because I have to travel via commerical air. I have scoured the JFTR and I can not find a way around this. Per the JFTR, the AO can designate a mode of travel that is most advantageous to the government, in this case commercial air, and the member, again per the JFTR, only gets one travel day. Does anyone have any experience in a similar situation? I would really want to have a car at my TDY location for obvious reason (getti…

I'll be on a mob for the first time second-half of FY22 (1 Apr - 30 Sep) and I'm looking for an official reference one way or the other on if I can take OCONUS leave. I'm an RPA pilot so the "mobilization" is at our home station flying our normal combat line, so no change in location/mission/etc. from the normal federal MPA orders we work all the time. I had initially thought it'd be no different than taking leave while on federal orders any other time, but other folks have raised their eyebrows and said to try to find out for sure. Looking to have a solid reg to point to before I either book expensive tickets to Europe or rolex the family vacation to another time. T…

  23. I'm applying to several Guard units in hopes of flying. My wife is about 1.5 years from graduating as a Nurse Practitioner. Some of the Guard units I'm applying to are not close to major hospitals. Do Mil hospitals employee civilians (specifically Nurse Practitioners)? I've used to search feature for this topic, but I couldn't come up with anything.

I'm a prior service active duty U.S. Army Aviation CPT RC-12/C-12 driver and current part-time Army National Guard CW2 C-12 IP/IFE/MTP. I fly ISR King Airs as a DoD Contractor overseas on a 60 on/60 off rotating schedule for my full time job and live in Vermont. Looking to cross over into the Blue to get my commission back and finish up the remainder of my military drilling career in the ANG. If possible, I'd like to chat with someone in the know about the 152nd AOG or flying MQ-9 RPAs in the 174th Attack Wing (NYANG). I have lots of prior CAOC, LNO, staff officer and overseas ISR piloting experience. I've tried both e-mailing and calling an ANG recruiter, but haven'…
