Air National Guard / Air Force Reserves

ANG & AFRES discussion area. Bums can search for flying opportunities with other units.

  1. Started by ecc97,

I've seen some similar topics, but want to run by specific situation but all of you. I've been trying to get hired by an ANG fighter unit for going on 5 years. ~18 rushes and ~50 apps later, I've come up with nothing. I'm of the mindset of fighters or bust (I know, I know), and as such, have started the process to enlist in one of my dream units. Now, the paperwork has already started, so the die is cast on some level, but I guess I want to know if I just shot myself in the foot? Background: Legacy FO 5k+ hours (not that it matters) Bachelors with a 3.8 GPA AFOQT: P99 CSO99 ABM96 ACAD70 VERB79 QUANT56 PCSM: 94

Thinking about transitioning to the Reserves as an IP for the T6. In the application it states that if selected, instead of the traditional “1 weekend a month/ 2 weeks a year” as an AETC IP I would be required to work 6 days a month. Anyone currently an IP at a UPT base got any info on this? Also trying to work as an airline pilot as my full time but worried about the commute. For those of you in the airline industry how do you manage the commute? Thanks!

Hello all, It's been a while since I've been here, but I've put in my packet for a boom operator position in a local tanker squadron. They recently got back to me and invited me to go to an "orientation" What can I expect? Is it going to be a group or individidual thing? I'm thinking it's a walk around the hangar and then a meet & greet. What should I wear? I'm thinking "business casual" type stuff with appropriate tennis shoes because we may be on a flightline. Any tips besides study up on the aircraft/unit? -Thanks

  5. I’ve heard about this happening before but I can’t find the thread. Here is the generic situation: Unit A is my preferred unit (location, airframe, mission, etc.). I also like Unit B, but not as much as Unit A. Unit B has a board a few months before Unit A. IF I am fortunate enough to get the slot with B, how unethical is it to also try and get a slot with A? This would obviously occur before any training would begin. On one hand, I see this as a douchey thing to do. On the other, they should have alternates right? Also, should I be upfront about it?

So my guard gig is getting ready to expire due to a unit mission change. I've been hunting for a guard/reserve position close to where I'm living. I've traded emails with the DO of a range ops det, and he's interested in having some IMA support, but currently doesn't have any open positions. He mentioned that he's not really up to speed on getting reserve support. I'm going to get in touch with the IMA coordinator at ARPC (not sure if that's what the position is really called) for this region to see what's what. Have any of you heard of or personally had any success in facilitating the creation of a position, and subsequently filling it? I'm pretty ignorant of…

I have read that it is highly recommended to have your PPL when applying to a squadron. Is there any possibility at all of getting accepted without any flight experience whatsoever? I figured their had to be another way since some people can not afford to just go out and drop $7000-$8000 for their private?

I'm currently Active Duty and in talks with an ANG unit, but have a question I keep getting different answer to: What length of a commitment do I incur if I transition to the ANG via Palace Front as an officer? The ANG recruiter is telling me 4 years, but that sounds high considering the payback for Palace Chase is 3x your remaining ADSC and Palace Fronting (from my understanding) is just a transition to the ANG with no commitment since I've served out my ADSC contract. For some context, I'm in a flying position and would be filling a flying position in the same aircraft/crew position that I currently fly with no additional training required. Thanks in advance…

Similar questions to what a Marine Osprey pilot asked a little while back. I am currently a Marine UH-1Y Pilot. I have enjoyed my time in the Marine Corps and Iove flying the Huey. However, my fleet time has been tough on my family. My initial commitment will be complete in 2023 but can accept orders to extend. I have experience as FAC/JTAC and did a tour with an infantry battalion and my next duty station will be an ANGLICO. I am interested in applying to one of the Air National Guard units that flies the A-10 while at my next duty station. I've done some research on the transition process, however I've been unable to find specific answers as to how the ANG wil…

So I am in contact with an AFRC recruiter for their November unsponsored but also reached out to and active duty recruiter for their November board. This recruiter noted that I cannot apply to both and that I need to pick one or the other. Can anyone confirm this?

I have a question about the Reserves. If I wanted to join the reserves as an officer but I am dating an enlisted NCO how would that workout? Are you really just a civilian when you are not doing your one weekend a month? Could/would she get in trouble? Where she is stationed and where I would do the reserves would not be the same location and possibly in a different state. Please advise....

  12. UPT student here just trying to learn how this all works. Going from AD pilot to guard/reserve, how much does my airframe on active duty matter to a guard/reserve unit? Examples: could a C17 guy get into an F16 unit? HH60 guy into a C5 unit? F22 guy into a C130 unit? Any relevant information is welcome, obviously a newbie with some curiosity.

  13. Started by Chida,

For those guard/reserve troughers out there: Let's say I am on an MPA tour and accrue 10 days of leave. At the end of the tour I take those 10 days of leave. Are there any restrictions on where I need to be when I finish my leave? When I was on active duty/Regular officer status the answer was "leave starts and ends at the local area." But since the end of my leave is the end of an active duty period, I'd think that it would be treated like terminal leave, meaning that I can be anywhere when my leave ends. I checked the regs I know of and this situation is not specifically addressed. Thoughts/opinions?

God knows that I don't know my arse from my elbow when it comes to the inner workings of the Guard/Reserve hiring/pay, etc. I was at the altitude chamber up at Langly today and made contact with someone from a certain guard unit that I might be interested in flying for some day. Back to my arse from my elbow: could someone please give me a general summary/difference between full time/AGR/traditional/technician, etc. Things in particular: pay/benefits (bonus?), which one are more conducive to flying for an airline. What the hell is a UTE(sp) day? Also I know that 1 year of guard time doesn't equal 1 year of AD time when it comes down to retirements, so if someone could …

  15. I need some help here. I've been trying for a long time to figure out how to transfer from the active Army to the USAF Reserves or National Guard. I've already taken the AFOQT and TBAS and got great scores. Here is the background. I have two kids in EFMP. I need to relocate to a place closer to family but I do not want to give up on the military. I already have 10 years in. I'm currently a commissioned Army pilot. I am a pilot at heart and that is what I'm going to do for the rest of my life. The problem is that my kids need stability and they need to be near family. It's getting to the point where the marriage will suffer. I have read into the regulations and i…

Searched a bit but no good info on how the process works if someone wanted to transfer from an ANG unit to AFRES. Been in the Guard a while but know almost nothing about AFRES. Location of the AFRES base and proximity to family is the motivating factor. Currently rated in a fighter and would be going to another fighter if it happened. Is the process similar to getting hired in the guard? Are there any major drawbacks going to the reserves? Part time vs. Full time work better in one vs. the other?

Ladies and Gents: They say insanity is "doing the same thing over again and expecting different results". There is a limit between insanity and determination here. I've applied to multiple units the past 2 year always ending in rejection. Had 1 interview at a fighter squadron last year. PCSM/AFOQT Pilot high 90s. Near 1000 hours flight time and CFI. Engineer undergrad and graduate degree with high GPA. Good job. Athletics in college and now. Age 30. Well- rounded. I ask for advice on my application post rejection and either it is no response or it is "we don't see anything wrong, but it was just really competitive this year". This isn't really c…

I'm planning on visiting a unit this weekend that I'm applying to. I was told drill starts at 0700 but was unsure when the best time to show up would be and how long to stay? Show up at 0650 and stay all day or a few hours later and stay a couple of hours? I deifinitely don't want to step on any toes while trying to meet everyone and get my name out there but I also don't want it to appear that I'm not interested.

  19. I know this topic is taboo but I would like to know. Of course I am planning on great success but it will be good to know what the implications are if any of the above happen in the training pipeline, rather than be naive to the situation and have something unexpected come up if there is a situation. Do the Reserves basically decide what they get to do with you? If you drop before inprocessing are your just out of the system? If you have issues at OTS are you just a Reserve staff sergeant for a few years? If you wash out of UPT can you essentially just pack it up and go home or will they assign you another job? Just curious. Thanks!

Just turned 26 this past January. My AFOQT is scheduled this month, hopefully this time around it doesn’t get canceled. Due to Covid, it’s been taking me months to get it scheduled. Once that’s done my goal is to serve my country ASAP. I have no preference of airframe or location, if I had to choose I would love to fly heavies. I’ve been told I could be considered old by some units and that my time is running out. If that’s the case should I attempt and apply to AD? I’ve heard many say they’ve applied to units for 2-3 years before getting selected or even not. I would hate to apply and interview with a bunch of units only to never get selected for a UPT slot and end up be…

  21. So I am trying to get my package done for the NOV UFT board, which is due 2 Nov. I am currently a reservist and all I need to finish the submission is a commissioning physical. This physical is sufficient to apply to the board, as long as a wright patt fc-1 is scheduled (doesnt have to be complete) I completed my PEPP and the reserve medical squadron told me it will be 45-60 days to get it processed..so I went to the active duty hospital and managed to get a commissioning physical scheduled next week. My question would be will this physical be sufficient for the board? The hospital where I went is where the recruiter sends civilian applicants (if not meps).. The reason…

Okay - I've found a few different threads that sort of tackled this question but I was hoping to get a better thread put together for this. I just realized that I could apply for Guard units (and that they existed), and that opens up a few more doors to me in terms of available units to apply to. I'm looking to stay somewhat local if possible, and I found some Guard units near me that fly the planes I'm most interested in. It would be ideal if I could get a slot at one of the local ones so I can be more involved in the unit's activities and have more opportunities to fly and is just better for long term (I'm in it for the long haul!). I don't have a problem moving for a f…

Hi guys, been lurking around the forums for a while and have decided it's time to start taking things a bit more seriously. A little bit about myself - I'm beginning my 4th semester out of a 6 semester Bachelors Degree (Construction Engineering - 3.97 cGPA, AGC chapter VP, Pre-Law Club, Competition Leader Student) at a school without AFROTC and at my time of graduation, I will be 20 years old. Ideally, I would like to commission into either the ANG or Active USAF as a CSO/ABM (I know it's not popular, but I'd love to talk to some ABMs about the field as well) or into one of the Engineering/Construction Officer AFSCs. The general consensus I have gathered is to start sp…

  24. Was discussing on another forum about my chances of going the pilot Reserves route because I'm somewhat hesitant of going Active Duty and not getting a pilot slot (Needs of the Airforce). Was trying to get some feedback on what the general feel of the training pipeline, acceptance, etc. was like. Instead I got a bunch of "If you're afraid of the needs of the AF going Active Duty then you shouldn't even commission". "It's about being an Officer first, not being a pilot." "Reserves isn't here just to get you hours/ratings." Like damn, just trying to gauge the feel of getting a pilot slot thru reserves v AD because 1.) I love flying 2.) I'm interested in servi…

  25. This is a cross post from rotc. I'm in in college and thinking of joining the California Air National Guard to help pay for college since I'm too old to get an AF-ROTC scholarships (I'm 32). My plan is to do AF-ROTC and Air Guard at the same time. I was told some AF-ROTC dtachments take the Air Guard's 422/IMR in place of DoDMerb medical exam and I want to get the opinion of those who's detachments allowed them to do this. Was it difficult to get your detachment to take 422/IMR? I spoke to the 3 detachments near me here in Los Angeles and they all told me they didnt know if they would take the 422/IMR so that made it seem like it was a tough sell.…
