I'm a rising 100/200 at my local detachment (560, if it makes a difference) and I've asked this in many places, but apparently it's not too common. I hope you can help. I'm an Orthodox Jew, and I was wondering if anyone had any insight into how possible accommodations are once I'm commissioned and assigned. 1. Sabbath- I'm fully willing to trade assignments with someone and work on Sunday, Easter, Christmas, etc. but is this an option? 2. Kosher- I've been assured that food is available, does anyone have personal experience with this? Good or bad? 3. I've heard rumors of the things that go on around military bases, and some of it suggests things I'd rather not be …

As you've read in the Ledgend of Jeremiah Weed thread, Nort Nelson is the man behind the legend. I was just sent this email. Please say a prayer for one of the World's Greatest Fighter Pilots. "I bring you some bad news. Yesterday afternoon Nort suffered an embolism, which is essentially an stroke in the brain. He is currently in a hospital in Lexington (Columbia) S.C. The doctor's have told Big Dog that he will not get better. He has suffered a good bit of brain damage and although he is conscious he will remain a vegetable. He and Big Dog flew back from an air show in Florida (I believe) yesterday. Once on the ground Big Dog noticed Nort acting strange and not ma…

Crash pilot who paused to pray is convicted Tue Mar 24, 2009 8:36pm EDT PALERMO (Reuters) - A Tunisian pilot who paused to pray instead of taking emergency measures before crash-landing his plane, killing 16 people, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by an Italian court along with his co-pilot. The 2005 crash at sea off Sicily left survivors swimming for their lives, some clinging to a piece of the fuselage that remained floating after the ATR turbo-prop aircraft splintered upon impact. A fuel-gauge malfunction was partly to blame but prosecutors also said the pilot succumbed to panic, praying out loud instead of following emergency procedures and then …

I was laid off from my job a little over a year ago. I am going back into the reserves as a flight engineer. I have finished my physical and everything and just waiting to hear back, but the recruiter sent me an e-mail stating that i need to fill out paperwork for my security clear and she said if I have marks on my credit that they need to be explained. My thing is that the economy is crap and i really only have knocks on my credit from my student loans. Will this prevent me from getting in? Thanks

I'm graduating NAV school in May, aircraft drop is tomorrow. I have two choices: 1)JSTARS to Robins 2)Slick to Peterson. I'm from SC so I'd like to be close to home, but I *think* I'd like the C-130 mission slightly more. JSTARS rarely drop at NAV school, so I really have never considered them. Are there career opportunities in the JSTARS world? If you're on a JSTARS, do you like the mission? Lastly, I'm married with one child. My wife's choice is the JSTARS since she would be close to home when I deploy. Advice? Help!

Just wondering if any Fighter Drivers here have any first-hand knowledge of this. Not trying to p*ss anyone off, but if this happened two years running, that's very disturbing... Did The USAF Get Beat Up By India Again? Here's a quick bit of defense-wonkishness, which I simply couldn't resist. No-one's saying so officially, but after the shock of having their F-15s kicked around the sky last year by the Indian Air Force in Russian jets, the USAF must have been hoping to even the score in this year's US/India air exercises. The thing is, the only reports so far (and admittedly they are Indian reports) suggest they got another shock. This year the USAF took F…

(AFNS) -- Tears stood in Sue Rhyner's eyes as she talked about her son, who, in a ceremony March 10 here received the Air Force Cross, the highest military decoration awarded by the service, and a Purple Heart. Staff Sgt. Zachary Rhyner of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron from Pope Air Force Base, N.C., received the medal for uncommon valor during Operation Enduring Freedom before a crowd of hundreds dotted with combat controllers' red berets. I'm trying to establish a class bank account for our B-course class. I was wondering if anyone knows about the tax rules regarding such an account. I've already got an EIN number but am worried about tax-exempt status. I realize we can request exemption under 501c (19) status as a veteran's organization, but as the filing fee is 300 BUCKS!! I wanted to see if anyone else has tackled this before. Thanks in advance!

So, regardless of your opinions on the principle of the thing (everyone has one), Has anyone used these with any success/failure? Anyone know of any readers in particular that work well? Thanks for the inputs. -JSM

This is a bit old but I just found a hardcopy of this and thought it was worth sharing... On 10 July 2000, General Michael Davison, Director, Defense Security Cooperation Agency, opened the Second Annual Security Cooperation Conference in Crystal City, where he presented the theme "Perspective Is Everything" as an appropriate motto for the security cooperation community which finds itself confronted by a myriad of changes resulting from this new era of a global strategy accompanied by rapid changes in technology and new missions. Former Ambassador Edward L. Peck, the opening day speaker, seized on the conference theme on perspective to deliver a primer on the verit…

Need some help... Contemplating McgUire as a follow-on (C-17). Can't really find info about the housing situation (off base), except you have to drive about 30-45 minutes, and sometimes up to an hour to get to base from home, and then, you are forking $1500 bones on a mortgage. Where are the places to live? And what/where exactly are the new communities around the base? Looking for a 4 BR, approx 175-225K...am I dreaming? I've heard Mt Holly, Burlington, and Cherry Hill. Am I barking up the wrong tree, or are there different places locally that I should try to research. Thanks

Not being an A$$, but what is with the fighter guys looking like child molesters when they get deployed? Just curious with the background of growing a mustache and looking like you want to touch little kids. I am joking about most of this but curious on the history and it would be a little strange to actually ask someone why they look like that. [ 22. May 2006, 04:04: Message edited by: RedDog ]

Is 28 too old to apply for UPT? I've spoken with a recruiter from the guard and he says that I need to be 27 1/2 and the recruiter from the air reserves says I'll just make the age requirement. I just made 28 in Nov 2004. I'm hoping to apply in may 2005 for the reserves. Not sure what the deadline is for the guard. I haven't been able to get a straight answer from anyone. I know that you cannot reach your 30th b-day before you enter UPT. But can someone give me a good idea of when you would enter UPT from submitting your app? How strict is this age requirement? Any official policy that I can ref. on this?

I got my RIP for Corpus the other day and saw I was going to VT-31 (which has the actual T-44). I've been told by some guys to try and get to VT-35 and do C-12s. Other than the obvious differences between the aircraft, is there and difference in training or benefits in trying to train in one over the other?

Alright guys, it's 1 week from 05-14's assignment night at CAFB and I've got a question. I'm looking at either C-17's to Charleston or C-130's to Little Rock as my number one choice but I can't get an up to date answer out of our IP's here. All of them have been out of the loop to long to really know what the current deployments are like. I've heard for the C-130's that you'll go four months to the sand and then four months home with the occasional 2-3 day trips while you're home but I've heard nothing about the C-17. Also how is the job market for spouses at both locations. Anything about either plane or location would be appreciated.
