General Discussion

Discuss general topics in the Military and Aviation. Please post pilot-selection & "how do I get a pilot slot" questions in their appropriate forums.

So question... as BO dot net is a highly secure forum we'll be able to discuss technical details and numbers /s but... I saw this, historical photo of a RAF Canberra bomber with ASW missiles: and wondered what the 11F crowd thought of instead of a loyal wingman (unmanned) why not a manned high flyer (above 50K) with another fighter radar in its nose, node in the link, BLOS that data up and other data in and X-teen missiles to call on from the high ground? One platform, optionally manned, crewed not solo, that does high altitude ISR, C2, BACN, UCAV LOS C2 and arsenal missions. Too much for a community to do all those missions?

In order to not derail a classic thread, but continue a rather good discussion, I'll pose this question here. What is so "dangerous" about a high speed abort on a long runway? I hear people brief over and over that they would rather continue the takeoff for "x" than do a high speed abort. Here is my take on it (keep in mind, all my experience is in the C-130 and we routinely take off and land with about 8,000' more than we actually need.) Say you're taking off full length on Runway 25 at LRF. You have 12,000' of runway in front of you. Say you get an abort call just before rotating, we'll call it 110 KIAS. Definitely a high speed abort. But you also have about…

This message just got sent out from the shirt and I'm curious from the enlisted perspective if this is really going to change that much? In 14 years I've only known one person to get affected by HYT and she dug her own grave when she lost a stripe and busted to SrA at 11 years which instantly put her over HYT. With the new policies are these the people we should be getting rid of anyways? Are your Airmen ready for HYT changes? Who has some recent gouge about Hill/Ogden, etc? I've got a possible job opportunity there and need some vectors on where to narrow a house search. Looking for an area that doesn't have houses right on top of each other (aka decent yard size), near "things to do", outdoor activities like hiking, etc, and near good restaurants (cool locally owned places, not national chains). Quality of schools is not something to factor into my decision (no kids). Low crime area, and within say a 20 ish min drive to base. I don't want suburban boring. This could potentially be a long-term situation if it works out. North of base in Ogden? South of base anywhere? To the west?

Does anybody know how this will affect civilian positions in military units?

I have searched and asked around, now for the almighty baseops to come to the rescue. Where did the term motherhood come from as it pertains to briefings before a sortie?

  10. Keep an eye-- 47th FS A-10s are making their way to Randolph today, and Vance tomorrow. A few of us will be around to show off the Hog and tell some lies about things we've done over the last decade to 1/4 century. On the official note, and the reason this didn't go straight to the Squadron Bar forum, a handful of us FTU IPs were invited to take a roadshow of UPT by MGEN Wills. One of our IPs is heavily involved in some online forums, and his continued commentary (always constructive... mostly) generated the all-expenses paid trip to see what all this hullabaloo is all about first-hand. We've got questions from our perspective as the next in-line to the UPT/IFF p…

TheBurt made a good point from another thread; that being we were getting into a topic that did not have to do with the original topic. With that said...holding came up as a topic, and I have to admit that I do not hold at all as a private pilot, and very, very rarely do I send someone to the penalty track. With that said, is it often that commercial airliners or military, doesn't matter, ever hold. And do you only hold to a) fulfill the FAR requirement, or B) teach something to a young pup. This thread may be pointless, but I believe, holding to be a thing of the past (think NDB) due to extension of runways, larger airports (gates to park a/c), greater attention of…

A quick search didn't show any results for info concerning Holloman, so I'm starting a new thread. Wife and I are headed to Holloman in a few months for B-Course and are trying to figure out whether to live on/off base and if off, where the good places to live are, as well as any useful info for the local area.

I'm wondering what kind of holster people use for concealed carry while wearing a flight suit. The squadron issued me a cheap nylon shoulder holster but it's not comfortable in any way. I noticed a lot of guys have bought their own shoulder holsters to wear under the bag. I've looked at the Galco Jackass system, which I like because its modular, so I can get different holster components for my personal pistols and swap them out. So what do you guys use? What features should I look for?

What are my fellow PCS'ers doing in this market? I recently PCSed and home prices like much of the nation are wild around here. I keep trying to wrap my head around buying a house that appreciated 80k in 2 years and its tough. A house that sold in 2019 on zillow for 270 is now 350! On one hand, if I stay renting I am paying ~17-20K to someone else. On the other, if I buy even at these prices and stay for 2-3 years, that's equity I could be pocketing (even assuming a 10% market drop).

Looks like I may be heading to SOCSOUTH post CGSC and was wondering if anyone has current info on where to live and any other pertinent info. Crime I see as the big issue around Homstead and the Miami area in general. Kendall (south Miami) seems to be one area but most stuff points towards gated/patrolled neighborhoods. Thanks for any info. Cooter

ive heard that you only get three chances to pass either a check ride or written test at UNT/Randolph, the whole time, and it is very realistic that one may drop out. on the flip side ive heard that you get like forty tries in UPT and you are basically forced through the program. how do the two compare with regards to attrtion and tolerance?
