Squadron Bar
Off-topic discussion. Keep it civil, don't abuse this forum.
1 – Keep it civil
If you don't have anything constructive to say, keep your mouth shut. Opinions are great, constructive criticism is encouraged, third grade retorts are right out. Threads that devolve into pissing contents will be locked. If your post starts to drag a thread in that direction, it will be removed. If you continue to instigate, you may face suspension of your posting abilities.
2 - Listen before you speak
A wise man once said, "You have two ears and one mouth, so you ought to listen twice as much as you talk."
Fighter squadrons have a rule that you can’t speak until you’ve had been there a year, and there's some wisdom to this; don't just show up here spouting your wisdom to dudes who are not only veterans to this board, but veterans to the Air Force. Hang out a while, read the posts, and be a fly on the wall. You'll see who's legit and who is generally clueless. This will prevent you from a severe case in foot-in-mouth-itis when you try to tell a combat proven pilot that he knows nothing while you sit at home waiting to see if your UPT package has been approved.
3 – UTFSF
Before you ask a dumb question, make sure it hasn’t been asked and answered – use the search function at the top right of each page.
4 - If it's been talked about before, keep it in the same thread.
After you follow Rule 3 but don't find exactly what you're looking for, revive one of the old threads instead of starting a brand new one. In other words, if you're trying to find information on housing at Del Rio and you find lots of old posts with Del Rio info, but nothing specifically answers your question - post your question at the end of one of those threads. This makes it easier for future searches so that 690 threads don't pop up when they try to search for "Del Rio Housing"
5 - Give it a subject line that makes sense
This seems anal, but there are several reasons. (1) If you have a nebulous subject like "Serious question" you're potentially not going to get answers from as many people as if your subject line was "Where to find Jeremiah Weed?" (2) It makes it easier for serious searches; the poor sap who types "SERE" into the search function will have a much easier time with specific subjects like "What do I bring to SERE?" vice just "SERE".
6 – No unpaid advertisements
Unpaid advertisements and promotion of outside websites are not allowed. Individual items are allowed to be sold in the “Market Place” forum within in accordance with the rules of that forum. For questions on paid advertising on this board, use the “Contact Us” link at the bottom of each page.

This doesn't bode well. How badly will this throttle back our porn habits? In all seriousness though, this could get ugly. https://m.policymic.com/articles/89475/the-government-just-turned-the-internet-into-the-equivalent-of-first-class-and-coach?utm_source=policymicFB&utm_medium=main&utm_campaign=social

"The most curious thing about our four defeats in Fourth Generation WarLebanon, Somalia, Iraq, and Afghanistanis the utter silence in the American officer corps. Defeat in Vietnam bred a generation of military reformers, men such as Col. John Boyd USAF, Col. Mike Wyly USMC, and Col. Huba Wass de Czege USA, each of whom led a major effort to reorient his service. Today, the landscape is barren. Not a military voice is heard calling for thoughtful, substantive change. Just more money, please." https://www.theamericanconservative.com/articles/an-officer-corps-that-cant-score/

SpaceX is suing to be considered along with ULA, the Boeing/Lockheed venture, to launch "national security" satellites into space. SpaceX is claiming to be able to launch for $300 million less than the current contract which was written on a non-competitive basis. This is the kinda thing I've been waiting for, though not sure how successful they're going to be since they're not even certified yet. Given the weight that the current contract owners have, success is unlikely in this first go around. However, note that - Perhaps there's some good to come of it. https://io9.com/elon-musk-spacex-will-file-suit-against-the-u-s-gover-1568027055 the site S…

This ought to stir things up in the FAA for a while... (Article from 7 Mar NY Times): Commercial Drones Are Completely Legal, a Federal Judge Ruled March 6, 2014 // 06:51 PM EST For the moment, commercial drones are, unequivocally, legal in American skies after a federal judge has ruled that the Federal Aviation Administration has not made any legally binding rules against it. The judge dismissed the FAA’s case against Raphael Pirker, the first (and only) person the agency has tried to fine for flying a drone commercially. The agency has repeatedly claimed that flying a drone for commercial purposes is illegal and has said that there’s “no gray ar…

My squadron gives tail flashes to departing members and I've inherited the job of building these. The inherited process is slow, expensive, and results in a shitty product. I want to improve this. I know there are one-stop-shop companies that do tail flashes but they all work in plastic or wood. At one point ours were built using real aircraft sheet metal from the maintenance shops. Those days are long gone, but I have still been restricted to using metal for the tails. Does anyone have experience with companies that make metal tail flashes? Is there a contact for salvage or Boneyard employees who could supply me with aircraft sheet metal? Any and all advice is …

I couldn't get a straight answer at MP. Do any of the experts know if I give up my current FL residency, how will it affect my wife's FL residency? i.e. Does she have to become an AK resident as well? From a political perspective, I'd like to stay a FL voter, but I'd much rather become an AK hunter/fisher. We'll most likely pull the trigger anyways, we just want to make sure we know all of the consequences first. Thanks for the help.

Did a quick search and haven't seen this posted here. If so, delete thread and I'll shack myself. This was linked on another board of mine. Some pretty cool pics of present-day Ho Chi Minh trail. Tried searching but my search skills failed me... My class has the opportunity to get a couple of kegs donated to us from a craft brewery in CO for our drop night. Only catch is the club says we have to buy the kegs thru them. Anybody have any experience in negotiating with the club? We don't mind paying to bring it in if possible but the idea of having some great beer (~6-9%) vs Budwater has me doing some research before approaching the club again..... I'll admit I am a little pissed at the club as well, the prices they are trying to charge for kegs is f'in outrageous (think almost $200 for a keg of bud)......they make roughly $20k every drop so money shouldn'…

Taking odds on just how badly the Air Force will water down the coming fad that will be 360 leadership. Given all the recent press about GO/FO misconduct and mistreatment there is a lot of chatter about 360 leadership coming to a base near you. I predict it will be an epic fail unless the real seniors put some teeth in it. 360 Leadership is supposed to be feedback that comes from members of an employee's immediate work circle. Most often, 360-degree feedback will include direct feedback from an employee's subordinates, peers, and supervisor(s), as well as a self-evaluation. I have two questions for those in charge; why aren't we doing it already and why do we have …

When an aircraft fleet is moving bases or otherwise going away, I imagine the 100's of families leaving as well will affect the local housing market. Am I going to have trouble selling or renting my house? Obvious answer seems like yes, but how bad will it be, and should I/could I do something 1-2 years in advance? (like sell early and rent my own house before it happens) Anyone go through something like this?

https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2014/01/30/president-obama-announces-more-key-administration-posts President Obama nominated Miranda Ballentine for the position of Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment, and Logistics. She is currently employed as the Director for Sustainability, Renewable Energy and Sustainable Facilities for Wal-Mart since 2008. The title is a probably too harsh, as she likely had some good environmental programs and efforts while at Wal-Mart. Of course, since we're talking about Wal-Mart, saying you improved their sustainability is like saying you reduced the number of food-poisoning incidents at Golden…
