  1. Well for one, there's some time management problems lurking in your statement, but that aside, do you think non-fighter communities work 40 hr weeks? I have a lot of friends in a lot of different corners of military aviation and I will never blow smoke up their ass saying I work more; it's just different. I think you're being sold a bag of bullshit if you think flying other platforms in the AF will lend you a leisurely life style. I will say my flying job is more difficult, perhaps even more stressful at times, than some, but that doesn't mean those others are working less hard to do an important mission (and spending inordinate amount of time doing additional duties, etc. that suck your time regardless of what wings you wear or what you fly). Bottom line, a UPT dude should pull for the mission he wants to do, not for a "life style." Maybe those two are related to an extent, but the mission piece is more important. Trying to pick a track or aircraft based on "being home more," or "not working X hrs per week," will only result in disappointment and possibly regret.

  2. I've never understood the "getting talked out of fighters" thing. Am I wrong in assuming most dudes that want to fly airplane X have dreamt about that for a decade+? I can't fathom one guy souring that long term of a dream in Phase 2.

  3. Some people were dropped on their heads as kids, you were obviously thrown at a wall with great force. I kid... But seriously, in your universe is Kaepernick really above Fox News? A self-described "civil rights activist" who didn't vote, but has verbalized his support of Fidel Castro?

  6. I can only speak for the Guard/Reserve side, but I was also a prior Active duty guy who got out (DD214), then returned to the reserve side and needed an age ETP. Sounds like 2 possible ETP's you're talking about? The total federal service one shouldn't be too hard to get, I think I fell under that and didn't really hear a thing about it from my hiring unit. The age waiver was another story entirely, that sucker is traditionally tougher to get, but times are changing so who knows what the current thought is there. Bottom line: If a unit likes you, they will go to bat for you and make those things happen. I didn't have any input into it really, aside from giving the required information to the recruiters when I was asked for it. I think the units themselves will handle that stuff. It won't be a situation where you can just pursue an ETP from NGB/AFRES and have the various units accept that. It's state/unit dependent. When I was going through this stuff (2014), I found heavy units where more likely to grant them vs fighter units. I'd share mine but honestly I've never even seen the damn thing, was completely transparent and behind the scenes. Being a prior active guy however, you have a leg up as most units prefer prior guys IMO.

  7. Almost all AFSOC MWS' used to require prior time before assignment but since 2000-something they've been dropped out of UPT. There are still a handful of data masked MWS' that require prior assignments though Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network Forums

  8. Don't count out the AT-6, it has a lot of strong points and the Scorpion is ready for prime time now with its production configuration set. The A-29 is still the front runner (IMO) but just pick one AF... This has probably been posted on this thread or the other ones that are on the subject of the LAAR: https://warisboring.com/the-pentagon-has-two-choices-for-light-attack-planes-2e4306197b1e#.utts1rvlb The concept OV-10X would have been sweet (particularly if they incorporated a turret mounted belly 20 or 25mm) but Boeing had nothing more than a proposal and some cool photoshopped graphics, the line was not ready to crank out one new airframe and there are not enough existing OV-10s in serviceable condition to be a viable option. I quoted CH from the beginning of this thread as he has actually flown both and can speak best to this... CH - have you had anymore participation on the LAAR project since this 2009 post? AT-8, A-29 or Scorpion Jet?

  11. Sorry Danny the world needs ditch diggers too and I completely disagree with your comments. First, who said we have to take other peoples money, this is a question of choices and priorities. Maybe just maybe we say "NO SIR, we can't do that mission without completely breaking the force." Living within your means doesn't mean live on this budget but continue to operate your people and equipment like a drunken whore driving a rental car in Vegas. How many hundred thousand hours did we burn flying pointless "No-Fly Zone" missions? Do we stay in Afghanistan, Syria, South Korea, Europe, South America, and continue to project power into the South China Sea? 80% of the USMC Hornets are hard fucking broke, 80% of their heavy vertical lift as well, 50% of the Navy F-18's are down for the count, 50% of our B-1's...it goes on and on. You are correct, everyone has the same problem so how about we think outside the box and say no for once. Most aviators are type A and we don't like to admit defeat, most of the folks I know and flew with are hard charging mission hacking mother fuckers who will find a way to get it done...but we have been doing that for too long and it is now at risk of major parts of the enterprise. So if are going to live within our means then lets operate within out limitations. If a Service Chief fell on his sword and said I need more money or less mission period dot, I think it would make a difference, if more than one did it I think we would have change. Now, GET OFF MY LAWN.

  18. Legit points but the LAAR is not a direct competitor or substitute for an RPA, but I believe a system to be used in combination with one, like an LOS Tier I RPA or maybe a Tier II. The LAAR does bring a lower cost operation and lower risk in some ways when operating in conjunction with other manned players but it's strongest point is its autonomous operational capability. No LOS, satellite footprint, no comms with the IMC, no problem - brief the crew and cut 'em loose. Start point, call sign and frequency - get the details at check-in. I'm not for just winging it but sometimes we need a capability to just operate on little planning or support, a LAAR seems to be able to meet that need.

  19. You've got until you're about 28.5 until you start having age related setbacks. So push hard over the next 3.5 years, get some good experience, and hopefully get selected before then. It is still possible after 28.5 but about 50 times harder to get a unit to talk to you. You need to get those AFOQT and PCSM scores way up...hopefully into the 90's.
