  1. Not sure how a group is supposed to consider this type of action as anything other than punishment. OG: "We just had another DUI and I'm mad as hell! All of you will now report in in Service Dress Monday morning!" Sure sounds like punishment to me. I've never understood how this type of action addresses the problem at hand. If the desired effect is to remind people of their duty to be more professional, there are far more effective ways to do it. Let's think about what might be leading to this rash of incidents for a moment, if, in fact that's what we have here: Could it be that there are far more second assignment instructors at Altus than ever before? Perhaps this younger, less experienced cadre bring with them issues not typically seen with when dealing with FTU instructors. Maybe these same folks have morale issues that need to be addressed. Again, more people have been non-vol'd to this assignment than typically seen in the past. Additionally, at least up to the time I left, AETC was becoming more and more draconian in their policies towards their instructors. Like it or not, people are going to have to blow off steam in such an environment. Some of them will make dumb decisions in the process. I can tell you that civilian employers face similar situations on a daily basis. Almost without exception, the individual is dealt with and the company continues to operate. I'm not so sure a radically different approach is called for when dealing with a group of qualified and experienced military operators.
  2. Thanks for the post Spur. I'd never heard the story of the subs. The almost unimaginable amount of preparation and logistical support needed to pull off the invasion makes me wonder if we could do it today. Listening to the radio broadcasts now.
  3. Takes big balls to draw a giant penis on the roof.
  4. Fuckin' sweet. Please tell me we get to feed Hans Brix, I mean Blix, to sharks.
  5. Better stop shopping at Walmart then. Shit, better just stop shopping anywhere. There is nothing moral about the global economy. Doesn't mean things can't improve, but you either live with that fact or wrap yourself in ignorance. Most of this country has chosen the latter btw.
  6. My God! Guys listen to what USAF pilot is saying! Apparently it's possible (and may even be prevalent) for special interest groups to influence politics in this country. SOMETHING MUST BE DONE!!!
  7. Sounds like the time I commercialed into GFAFB to pick up a jet. Got there late at night after a long day with a couple of connections. They were testing everyone at the gate. When asked what unit I belonged to, I was met with blank stares when I stated I was TDY. The confusion probably added about 30 minutes to the 1 hour wait for my turn to piss. Got more blank stares when I informed them that I was supposed to enter crew rest 10 minutes into the wait and that the delay would lead to mission impact the next day. Didn't change my position in the line.
  8. It's not about how much money you save the DOD, how many Airmen you prosecute for sexual assault, or how many suicide attempts you prevent. While those, and many other goals are worthy of pursuing, they should be pursued because they enhance warfighting capabilities, not because they are the goal in and of themselves. The view from the trenches is that too many leaders have lost the forest through the trees and have become obsessed with chasing whatever metric happens to be hot right now. If we would just focus on the mission, all of the things that are important to mission accomplishment will become obvious, and all of the things that aren't will fade into the background.
  9. Jesus Christ. I'll bet this guy plays shoot your watch and talks about aspect ratio, and notching, and what not while fucking his wife. Guys, the water's nice on the other side. Big Blue will get the idea when you start voting with feet in large numbers. There is literally no reason to put up with this kind of shit.
  10. "Fat Yak" pale ale from Matilda Bay Brewing co. Have yet to find it outside of Australia, but if/when you get down there, give it a try.
  11. So on the bright side, maybe we'll get to walk in the footsteps of our grandfathers and sleep with their women and drink their expensive wine as we liberate the French. Bonus points if we can liberate them before the Russians get there.
  12. Choke yourself for defending ANY decision that ass-hat made at USAFE.
  13. IF the Army wants it, how about they pay for it, they get OPCON and mother AF uses the Army provided resources to continue to maintain and fly it? Of course, the AF would have to resist the temptation to spend the money an a few more F-35s......uhhh, on second thought, nevermind.
  14. So my unit is telling me I can't reschedule the January UTA because of a lack of funding. Maybe I'm revealing some glaring ignorance here but I'm wondering why it matters if I get paid for working Mon/Tue vs. Sat/Sun? What's really frustrating is that the training I had planned for the reschedule had far more validity than what I'll get at the UTA. Anyone else seeing similar issues?
  15. A big thanks to all who are away from their loved ones and families today. I've been there, and I know the vast majority of you will shrug it off as part of the job. Nevertheless, :jd: :jd: to all of you!
  16. Great. Get proficient with it in 6-9 minutes and call it good. Other setups will take longer.
  17. I think most moderately intelligent people have seen the writing on the wall for a while now. Anyone recently retired or about to retire has likely been doing their own investing and will probably be ok. The folks who are royally screwed are in their 70s and 80s and on a fixed income. They are no longer a large enough voting block for your average politician to be concerned about. Most of us have figured out by now that you have to take care of number one first. It's nothing new that folks in this country will put an American flag on their lapels or an "I support the troops" bumper sticker on their cars, but the minute they are asked to make ANY sort of real sacrifice, they'll turn their backs. That's not to say, necessarily, that these people aren't worth defending. It's just the nature of the beast and something that every service member should understand as he goes about his work. Continue to fight the good fight. Just don't expect much (or any) recognition.
  18. Agree with the need for pilots to be able to do that pilot shit and hand-fly the airplane proficiently. However, guys these days need to be equally proficient with the automation. It's there for a reason and has the potential to improve safety and reduce fatigue during normal ops. The goal should be to never have to ask "What's it doing now?". You should know exactly what the automation is going to do before you push the button.
