The Palace is a fine establishment. I lived in the dorms back then and spent most of my time in a stupor from school and or booze. I recall a few married guys living in Schertz and they seemed to like it. I am sure there are more guys on here with better knowledge, I just wanted to be a smartass.

Forgot about the Fed side. My wife (former military) works for DHS and I know a good handful of guys who are getting picked up by the FBI without any real law enforcement background. If you're willing to go anywhere for a job, that might be worth looking into.

I was a 12B and unfortunately, there are not a lot of jobs that call for putting bombs on target. But, having military experience pays off huge dividens. What is it you're looking to do? Lucas Group and Orion International are very good companies for helping you find a job. They specialize in working with people getting out of the military. I went with Orion and got 3 job offers from Fortune 500 companies through them...I didn't take the jobs but it was nice to know that with my background (no business education at all) I still had options in good companies. The salary they offered were comparable with what I was making when I was still "in". All depends what you are looking for. Baby boomers are retiring all over, public safety (chicks dig firefighters), railroads, and air traffic control are all going to be hiring a lot over the next few years. Good jobs with good pensions (for now) if you're willing to take a pay cut. Also, you get Vets points and that is huge, especially if you get a disability rating (30% gets you an additional 5 pts). i went from #7 on a list up to #1 and a job offer thanks to the Vets points. Speaking of disability rating ...talk with the flight doc now about EVERY ailment you have or have had while in the AF. Don't scam the system, but take advantage. At the very least you could probably get hearing loss and tenitis without the VA putting up too much of a fight. Numbness and tingling in your extremities is hard to prove...or so I have heard.

Wow...putting fellow aviators in with these guys huh? Ballsy. As a Nav, I could give two shits what the sign says...I don't need a "home" to stroke my ego. I do however appreciate the heritage aspect of it and this is just another example of true heritage and tradition on the decline while being PC and making everybody feel happy is on the rise. This is only rumor (which I do need to explain to some people that means "not fact") but a little birdie "in the know" told me that the current (soon to be former) ACC Commander spearheaded that change.

This is a good thread with some excellent advice from the old-timers. I got out after my "7 year hitch" and while there were many opportunities (I got out mid-2008 when things were still fairly decent) for $100k plus jobs, I went in the opposite direction as far as salary goes...I am currently making about half of what I made in the AF. The military headhunter groups had some good jobs lined up for me, I was able to find a few on my own as well, but I took personal satisfaction over salary. Fortunately, the wife more than makes up for it. But I consider the job I have now to be the best damn job in the world (behind B-52 Radar Nav of course!). My point is do what you want to do or would like to do. Pay is nice, but why be in a job that you hate...or you can do what I did and marry a GS-13! You have to do a lot of research and you have to sell yourself. Take advantage of the programs that the AF has available for those folks who are getting out. My first job interview ever was after I got out of the Air Force...and I wasn't prepared. As I gained experience I found that selling yourself in an interview is like embellishing an OPR. Make the simple and trivial stuff seem earth shattering. The civilian world is cut-throat and with very few exceptions, there isn't much team-oriented mission accomplishment. There are many people who will gladly take a shit on their own mothers to move up. Good luck!

There has been a lot of this going around lately it seems like...I don't know if it is happening more or big blue is cracking down more, I am guessing it is the latter.
