The July 21 crash into the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Guam claimed the lives of all six airmen onboard. It was the Air Force’s worst accident in 2008. Shortly after the crash, aircrew family members said they were told there had been no distress call before the plane went down. Lost in the crash were aircraft commander Maj. Chris Cooper, 33; co-pilot Capt. Michael Dodson, 31; electronic warfare officer 1st Lt. Robert Duane Gerren, 32; navigator 1st Lt. Joshua Shepherd, 26; navigator Maj. Brent Williams, 37; and flight surgeon Col. George Martin, 51. All were deployed from Barksdale Air Force Base, La., except for Martin, who was assigned to the medical group at Andersen Air Force Base. Before the accident, a B-52 had not crashed since 1994, when a pilot from Fairchild Air Force Base, Wash., put the eight-engine jet into aerobatic maneuver, sending the jet into an uncontrollable dive.

To the KBAD bros and to the BUFF community in general, we have been through A LOT of shit over the past year or so, I am proud to see that we stuck together as Team BUFF, did well on our inspections, and took care of the BUFF family. Any idea when the report will be out? Been nearly 4 months, I know these things take time.
  5. Everybody has a story of what they were doing that day, where they were when it happened. Thought it would be interesting to see what stories (unclass of course) baseopers had. 9/11 was my second day on Active Duty. I had just arrived at Randolph 2 days before to show up for casual. I woke up to turn on the TV before heading in and the channel happened to be on a spanish news channel. Took me a minute to figure out what the hell was going on. I was staying off base and as you can imagine, it was nearly impossible to get on base that day. I know the BUFFs at both Minot and Barksdale were in the middle of a nuke exercise sittin alert. According to the conspiracy whackos though, BUFFs were flying overhead that day (ala CHROMEDOME) loaded with hydrogen bombs.

  8. This is nothing new really and I think the media may be taking it a bit too far. There is A LOT of crap similar to this that goes on all over the missile fields. I know co-ed missile crews that hump to pass the time down there.

  10. Not sure about Andersen or KBAD, but guys are flying here at Minot and we've got some jets deployed for Red Flag that are flying as well.

  12. No...and if there are not any survivors, it is going to be really hard to determined what happened. Now maybe somebody will finally realize that we need something like that in the BUFF.
  13. takeoff, landing, air refueling, and during weapons employment. that is generally when we are strapped in. we do get up and walk around a lot though...use the pisser, cook some food, take a nap on the bunk, or play cards...all in a days work! there are 6 ejection seats in the BUFF so hopefully all 6 guys were strapped in. The Gunner's ejection seat was left in place after the Gunner's were taken out of the jet. There is actually room on the jet for 10 guys. Most non-ejection seat crewmembers sit at the IP, IR, or "10th Man" seats. If somebody is occupying a non-ejection seat and the emergency is catastsrophic or uncontrollable, chances are he isn't getting out. Procedures are to find any hole (where an ejection seat used to be) in the jet and jump out with a chute on. no matter what though, as always, keep all involved in your prayers and thoughts. yeah...i thought about that...but that was a mech error and fatality that could have been prevented. i chalk that one up to crew error.
  14. Not to take away the seriousness of a crash or fatality, but pointy nose jets going down are common. It is something we try to prevent but have grown accustomed to. A big jet going down though is another thing. Especially a BUFF with 6 crewdogs on board. Not to stir up speculation, but the last BUFF crash was in 94. The last time a BUFF crashed due to a mechanical failure was in 88 (I think). The BUFF has had a tough year and this is definitely something we don't need as a community right now, I pray those guys are alright floaing in their one-man yachts.

  17. Anybody catch that show on the History Channel the other night? Pretty interesting stuff. Most of it speculation I'm sure, but cool nonetheless. Is the B-1R something that is actually being considered? Cool concept, liked the V-tail it had. I had heard they were possibly going to re-engine the BONEer with Raptor engines, but I didn't know they were going to make it an AMRAM truck. Screw the BONE, lets put a bunch of 120s on the BUFF!
  18. looks like it crashed right on the rwy. www.kuam.com. GLAD to hear the guys made it out okay. on a lighter note...a BUFF from kbad had to land at the airport here at minot. the weather was socked in at the base, and they were down to 20k fuel. not a big deal for most jets, but considering the BUFF burns up quite a bit of fuel and the rwy at the airport is only 7700' long, i am sure it was a bit sporty. good job by those guys.
  19. Don't get me started on this. Our SQ/CC told us a few days before 1 March that we could not grow mustaches (even though they would have been well within regs) until 15 Mar because T-Mike was visiting 13 and 14 Mar. He didn't want 85 officers with bad mustaches running around the sqdn while the CSAF was here. Big time BS flag and a lot of guys were pissed. The one guy that actually had been growing a mustache for awhile was pulled from mission planning with his crew by our SQ/CC and basically hid away so T-Mike could tour our brand spankin new state of the art mission planning rooms without a mustache distraction. Long story short...our mustache march started today and will end 15 Apr. You really get a good idea of what your leadership is really like when Flag officers show up. They may seem like good guys around the squadron bar, but be wary when a 4-star approaches. My guess is, T-Mike would not have cared (had everyone been in regs) and would have thought it was great camraderie.
