  1. Your in a good spot with age. Get your PPL and keep casting a net. I’m not AD but have plenty of bros that compare AD to a jail sentence counting down the days until their ADSC runs out. Sent from my iPhone using Baseops Network mobile app

  2. Awesome! Congrats, and good on you for taking the initiative! Absolutely not a waste of time. Every unit seems to give preference to their internal guys, they've worked in the unit and have interacted with the pilots. They've been able to see their work ethic in a lot instances. But if they weren't interested, they wouldn't have invited you to interview. And if they weren't open to outside candidates, they would not have sent you an application. Like I said, I knew someone in the unit and was able to visit right after they got their C-17s. I was just trying to get an understanding of what the guard was and how it worked. Just in conversation, I was told numerous times that I'd have to enlist and work in the unit before they'd consider me. So I'd imagine you'd have gotten the same response if they weren't going to give consideration to outside applicants. Plus, even if you aren't hired, an interview is great experience. I got picked up on my second interview and credit a lot of the success to having real guard interview experience.

  3. I think interviewing with any unit that you can see yourself flying with long term is a good use of time. If there's one thing that holds true (in my opinion) throughout this process, it's that we as applicants have absolutely no clue what any given unit is looking for. Don't handicap yourself by not taking an interview simply because you think you'd have less of a chance. That being said, if you've been offered two interviews at units you like equally, of course, choose the one that you think you have a better shot at. But don't sell short the opportunity to get a slot simply because of message boards or rumors. We have no clue what they're looking for. Addendum... especially somewhere like Memphis. The food, music and culture of that town rocks, and if civilian flying is your thing, you're already living in base.

  4. What I imagine is happening, though it's just a guess, is that the VLPAD program as a whole is being reviewed, because other AFSCs that were included might have met their goals or other AFSCs may need to be added. So they stopped the whole damn thing until they can figure it out. Meanwhile, you have guard dudes willing to go, literally a win/win, and the AF is fucking it up. Again, other options out there and obviously the air force cant get their shit together, so they'll miss out on recruiting the talent.

  5. Absolutely we did. I cannot fathom what they would be reviewing to not take volunteers. Maybe it’s like when you’re drunk at the roulette table, and you’re thinking to yourself, “it can’t POSSIBLY be red for the 18th time in a row.”

  7. There is a video of the Texas church shooting today where an old guy smoked the perp from the other side of the room with one shot. Doesn’t happen often but today a good guy with a gun prevented another Auckland or Sutherland Springs massacre.

  8. I left AD this year so I can't give you an up-to-the-minute update on what's happening in any community, but if it were me, and I was a herbivore wanting to fly something that can blow shit up, my conversation would go like this: Sq/CC: Hey Maj Snuffy, I know you're coming up on your ADSC. What are your plans? Me: Well sir, I've always wanted to drop bombs and I also love chasing high school girls around the dance floor at country bars, so I'm thinking a B-1 to Dyess would be fun Sq/CC: Well, you know I can't get you that. How about ACSC? We've run through the primaries, alternates, and the alternates to the alternates, and everyone is declining school. You'd make a great Sq/CC one day...{checks notes}....Kevin. Me: I'm good sir. I heard AA is hiring literally 1500 pilots this year and Delta somewhere close to that. Do they have country bars in Atlanta?

  12. It rips me apart to post this, Matmacwc flew west peacefully Christmas morning after a long fight with cancer. He bravely fought it to the end. He was truly a good man and a great fighter pilot. If your inclined to pray please pass a few on to his family. Nickle on the grass my friend. 🍺
