Hey Spouses, I have a question about the hospitals available in Columbus for OB/GYN. The majority of girls who've had babies here seem to say, don't have a baby at Baptist Memorial, go to West Point or Amory. I've looked online and Baptist appeared to be the bigger more equipped hospital, and it's definitely closer to base, so my big question is... What exactly are the negatives at Baptist? I would really like specifics since the only times I've heard girls talk about how bad Baptist is, they never say what is so bad about it. Also anyone had their baby at Amory or West Point? Any perceptions on those two hospitals? Thanks, I really appreciate any advice or storie…

There are often new threads that don't need to be started since their information has been covered in the past and needs only to be revived and possibly updated. Here's the ROE on searching and starting new threads. 1. UTFSF: If there is a remote chance that your topic has been discussed, use the search function to find it and re-open that thread. 2. Get something close: It doesn't matter if your specific question was not answered - find a thread that is close and ask your question there. The intent is to consolidate discussion as much as possible so there are a minimal amount of threads discussing the same topic. 3. Disclaimers are unneccesary: You don't need to st…

The complete Vance Gouge: Living- I suggest the BOQ. Most of the apartments around Enid suck big time. The BOQs are small, but nice. They're furnished and private. Plus, it's very very very very nice to be only a short walk from work in the morning. Especially for those 0500 shows. Restaurants- Applebee's, Chili's, and Lone Star Steakhouse. That's about it. No chow hall on base, so learn how to cook, fast. The bowling alley has some great greasy burgers, but consume in moderation or your resistance training after UPT will consist of trying to secure the velcro straps on your flight suit. Hi Spouses! My husband and I will be selling one of our cars while in UPT training. We aren't sure what to do because it would be nice to have two cars at Columbus and then sell one during our 4 1/2 months at Altus. If we can't sell it at Altus, it would be a big problem because we are going O-CONUS. So here's my question. Does anyone out there have experience trying to sell a car specifically at Columbus or Altus? If so, how long did it take your car to sell? Thanks, KC

It seems like EVERYONE that goes to UPT is going in with the hopes of flying fighters. I realize that these are pretty neat planes, but also that there are a LOT of other neat planes in the AF. So my question is this - are there people that go into UPT wanting to fly something other than fighters? I'm sure, obviously, there are a few, but I have yet to hear of any. It just seems like everyone is competing to fly fighters and no one's first choice is anything else.

when i started upt, the wives were very friendly to the 2 of us (female pilots in my upt class). i was invited to dinner when the married folks invited other single pilots over, we all hung out and had fun. when i got to my first base, the unit was small, and though i wasn't invited to the spouses' club meetings, when the wives came to the squadron they were all real nice and friendly too. adn we still went out to dinner in groups and what not. i'd say that the wives in my current squadron are not as nice or friendly. my personal opinion is that the spouse club "leader" should invite female pilots to their group - at least once. why not? i'd love to meet more w…

My family and I will be hoping to be at UPT in 2008. For those of you who live in the base housing, what utilities/services do you pay? Trying to make the "Do we live on base?" decision. Also, does your housing vary depending on the size of your family? We only have 2 kids, but want to compare to an off base equally adequate living space. -Crazy

Hello, all. I wasn't sure what Discussion Group this fell best into, but this one seemed to have more family-specific questions. Barring any unforeseen issues, I'll be heading to Kelly for PIQ here in a few months and I'm looking to bring my family with me. I was wondering if you folks might have some pointers on helping to make that happen. I gather they won't put any family provisions on my orders for a TDY, but I'm trying to figure out the best way to go about it all since they are coming with me. As of now, I'll likely have to have a TDY en route or TDY from UPT because I've got a tight turn between UPT graduation and my first day of PIQ class. There likely won'…

Looking to hire a CFI in the Columbus AFB area to be the primary instructor responsible for executing a USAF Flight Screening Syllabus. Required to be available Monday through Friday to fly/teach approximately 15 students per year (2 students every 8 weeks). Each student requires 25 flight hours and 40 hours of ground academics. You work with students to determine which days/time you do the lessons....very flexible schedule!! CFI would get approx 375 flight hours, would keep all ground instruction money, and all flight instruction money (minus $6-9 to cover insurance premiums). Opportunities exist to pick up some of the flight schools weekend PPL students and cond…

  12. Hey! I'm hoping someone can give me answers... I have a friend who's husband is going to England. She was denied medical clearance. They have a son together, who was not. She is planning on going over there regardless. I think she is under the impression that since their son is on his orders, that they will still receive everything that they normally would, except that she'll have to pay for her ticket out of pocket. 1) Will they receive dependent rate OHA? (And, how would this play in the mandatory live-on-base policy?) 2) Medical? I was under the impression that non-command sponsorships weren't allowed to use the base hospital and/or were allowed to…

I have one year of a BSN in nursing completed. This will be my 2nd Bachelor's degree, so I probably have about 2-2.5 years left of school, although I would like to get a minor in Spanish, so that might bump it up to 3 years. My husband is going to start at Whiting next week and I have an opportunity to take a class or 2 at a state university in the spring semester. I'm just not sure if I should hold off and try to do all 3 years after he is done with pilot's training or if I should take some classes now. If I do take classes now, I probably won't be able to go back to school until Fall of 2008 because of his training and moving around for it. Does anyone have any…

  16. Hey everyone, So my boyfriend is in the process of getting to UPT for the Air National Guard. He leaves Feb 2015 to either Columbus(9 hours away) or Vance (5 hours away). My question is if I should go with him. Some back ground, we have been together for 4.5 years. Met in college and then did a long distance relationship for a year while I finished school. I'm a pediatric registered nurse and have a wonderful job (2 yrs experience). I know I could find a job in either place but it just may not be as great as the one I have now, but it is just a year. I'm not a huge fan of long distance relationships but I know it is doable because we have done it before. I know he wil…

  17. I tried searching but I haven't really found much about this. I think the regs are fairly new too (last fall) so maybe it just hasn't been discussed yet. I also put this is the spouse section because it seems like the place for family/housing questions, so if it would be more appropriate somewhere else please go ahead and move it! Anyway, I heard that the AF and Army both introduced some restrictions on what breeds of dogs you're allowed to have if you live on base. So I looked up the latest AFI, here: https://www.e-publish.../AFI32-6001.pdf At the bottom of the first page, it says: Now, I don't know if I really ever want to live on base if I can help i…

Ok women... I need to know... AND I know that this might sound stupid or shallow, but I have to ask... Just how formal do the women need to dress to the parties where the men have to wear their blues? Even tho I grew up in the Air Force I never saw this aspect of things, and I don't want to look way over/under done to these parties. My first offical experience with this will be when my husband graduates from OTS. PLEASE HELP!!! [ 30. January 2007, 05:41: Message edited by: Toro ]

My fiance and I are having a big wedding on June 15, 2013. We have been planning since last summer when he proposed. Today, we found that his EAD is May 28, 2013. I'm not sure what to do or what all it means. He got Laughlin so it's not too far away, we are from Oklahoma. Does he go to IFS right after his EAD or is there downtime? Do we need to get married before he EADs? I would really appreciate any advice or knowledge. Thanks!

I'm looking into buying an engagement ring, and have absolutely no idea what I am doing. My main question is how does the financing work? I've heard about 100 different things about how you buy them or how to finance them. Since there are probably quite a few of you who are probably somewhat recently familiar with this process, could you please shed some light on my situation. I want to go into this process with some knowledge so I know what I am doing once I start to buy, and so the store doesn't jerk me around. Do I make down-payments then get the ring, or get the ring then keep paying (like a car), or charge it to a card or what? Or at least a suggestion about …

Has anyone ever been in a position whereas their spouse started out as a foreign national (such as without a green card or US naturalization)? What do I need to do first if we are to get hitched? I'm a newly commissioned LT about to EAD in two months. I punched this question off to my Det NCOIC but he needed to research a bit and ask some questions off to others as well. I basically have no idea where to start and would like to look for some additional experiences. The marriage paperwork I understand is straight forward, but everything else, such as the security clearance (I have a current TS) and the fact that she is not a US citizen, is unknown territory for me.…

  22. Hi guys, currently an ANG STUD in the UPT pipeline slated for the TH-1 track based off of my final MDS, so I'll be headed to rucker in the fall (September). Currently unmarried, but will be traveling with the significant other and dog (husky). For those that have recently gone, currently there, or just have something to add, please chime in! Looking for living recommendations around the area and general lifestyle (pace of training) to get a better idea of the future. Obviously still a couple months out, but any advice is appreciated. If anyone knows of pet friendly apartments or housing rentals within the BAH limit, that would be great too. Thanks!

Hello! I am just wanting some "what to expect" information for what it is like to be a Air Force Pilot Wife. My boyfriend (of 5 years) was selected to attend the Air Force's Pilot school. This is WONDERFUL and I could not be more proud of him! We are both civilians, although his brother is a loadmaster in the Air Force. I know the Officer-vs-Enlisted lifestyles is very different. My s/o wants to be a Fighter Pilot, but of course I know that it all depends on his placement in his class and all of that. So any information about that is great! Although he is graduating college in May and entering the DEP program. I do not graduate until next May. I am 22 year…

I will be getting engaged to my girlfriend before I head off to UPT. However, she will not be able to move down with me for the first year because of her schooling, but will most likely move after the second phase of pilot training. We have talked about the sacrifices alot (seeing eachother once a month if i fly her down to TX from CO, no more talking on the phone 5 times a day, etc). We will be battling a long distance relationship for that first year and I was hoping to get some good advice for both her and I on keeping things going smoothly. I realize that I will not be able to go see her but maybe twice a year in CO, so i will have to fly her down to TX to see me …
