Hello Everyone, I am currently in the process of auditioning for military bands but one of my biggest worries is the fact that I have high myopia. My prescription is around -11 in each eye with 2.00 CYL in each eye as well. Allbeit this is me corrected fully to 20/20 vision so I assume that 20/40 is probably much less. I was wondering if I should get LASIK or PRK or would I be able to skip that process entirely with a wavier? I have no history of any eye problems and my eyes are in great health. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hey fellas, I am looking for advice on my current situation. I have recently been selected to fly heavies at my home station guard unit (historically a highly competitive unit to get into) however, I am still pursuing the fighter route. I am going to preface my questions by stating that I have been upfront with my leadership and the UPT board with my aspirations. They have been nothing but supportive and understanding. So, fighter guys. Do you think it is wise to use my current position as leverage toward reaching a single seat? Is there some appeal to knowing a candidate has been selected by another unit? Overall what are your thoughts on my sit…

Gents, I've been toying around with the option of not staying in the Marine Corps once my initial commitment has been completed. This is due to a multitude of factors: 1/1 deployment to home ratios, aging airframes and declining flight hours, etc... That being said, each and every time I come back from a DCA, AI, or BFM flight I swear I'd sell my soul to keep doing it. I'm curious about the ANG and Reserve options, and I've done a fair amount of research, but I still feel relatively in the dark when it comes to the Air Force as a whole. Would a first tour, 4-ship Hornet flight lead be competitive in potentially getting selected for an ANG or Reserve Fighter unit?…

I just applied to my first squadron, and I'd like to know how you guys think I stack up. Here are the numbers: GPA: 3.75 AFOQT: 92/77/50/60/43 PCSM: 67 Flight Hours: 27 Age: 28 LORs: 3; from current and former AF officers Obviously I need to get more flight hours and get that PCSM up. Flying and graduating college are my top priorities right now. I expect to have my PPL by the end of the year, and about 80 hours around that same time. I will continue to build hours until I get picked up by a unit. I know I'm cutting it close with my age; I'm going to keep pushing until I get hired. Thanks everyone.

Right, so here are my numbers, AFOQT: 96/89/76/95/49 PCSM: 93 GPA: 2.82 Bachelor of Applied Science: Technology and Management. All my bachelor's classes were taken online while I was working on my parent's farm. I also have an associate's in professional aviation with a GPA of 3.2 if that means anything. Flight Experience: 299.2 hours. Private, multi, instrument, commercial, with high horsepower and complex endorsements. I'm also enlisted (E-3) with the unit I'm applying at. I work as an Airfield Manager in the OPS department, so I know the majority of the pilots on a friendly basis.

  8. How do they look at your college GPA when it comes to making a selection. Do they simply look at your overall GPA and that's it or do they analyze each individual class when they receive your transcript? Right now my GPA is only 2.87 mostly do to the fact in my Gen Ed classes I have gotten straight B's and two C's (In Music and Public Speaking). Would they see these grades and would it effect them> However, I think I can pull my GPA up when I take only my Business classes (I'm a business Admin major) because in my first two business classes I got pretty high A's. I have only two gen ed classes left. So If I do well in all of my business courses and my GPA is 3.5 or bet…

This post probably won't contribute much to anyone but I need to get it off my chest and I'm here... so why not? I joined the Air Force at 19 years old in 2003. After 18 months, I was separated under "Force Shaping Phase II" (I was RIF'd) in 2004 at 20 years old. During those 18 months on AD, I worked on C130H models as a GAC troop and dreamed of one day flying for Big Blue. After my separation, I joined the Air National Guard so I could stay a part of the family and started plugging away at my undergrad degree so I could apply to OTS while thinking, incorrectly, that my time in service would count against my age and that I'd be able to apply to fly after graduating. Supp…

  10. Hello All, I am new to the board. I have just applied for OTS (as a civilian) for the upcoming rated board. I have only applied for a pilot slot as I plan on being a third generation pilot in my family. Hey everyone! So I applied to the last UFT board and didn't make it. I applied with pretty terrible scores because when I originally took the tests I wasn't planning on going rated. My original PCSM score was an 11 my pilot was a 48. I just retook the TBAS and thought I did pretty well. My PCSM went up to an 18. I plan on taking the AFOQT in a few months after some studying. My question is, will I see a significant jump in my PCSM if I make it in the 80-90s for my Pilot. From what I read online without flight hours the highest a person can get is a PCSM:70. I'm curious on how the breakdown and weight of each portion is. Any advice helps. Also is have 0 flight hours…

  13. I've put off making this thread for months. Back in December I took the AFOQT after almost a year of waiting. I studied my ass off for it and studied the way everyone said too. I purchased the Baron's book, the Trivium Book, the online practice test from AFOQT academy as well as several PDF files of AFOQT, ATSB, SIFT practice tests. To practice I used scan tron sheets to simulate the time and real testing environment. I took two weeks off of work up through the testing date to make sure I was fully prepared and had plenty of time to study. On practice tests, I was regularly getting 90s-100s on each subsection. I went and took the test, felt I did well and three weeks late…

Greetings, Is it possible to go through Navy OTS and pilot training, do 2-5 years of active duty, than transfer to an Airforce ANG unit before the obligation period? If possible, is it looked down upon? I read here that transferring from one service to another is possible - , however I assume that's after one's commitment period?

  19. Hey everyone! First off, merry Christmas. 2nd I know I’m a little behind the game applying I just found out you could be a reserve pilot a few months ago, let alone not be a pilot to apply. ANG is the only route for flying within a 3 hour drive for my wife and I. Shoot it straight for me. Scores as follows: Pilot 94 Nav 78 AA 67 Verb 67 Quant 62 PCSM 57 w/5 flight hours. GPA: 2.872 in Poli sci and religious studies (I went full liberal arts in college and first half was rough) I’m a 30 year old firefighter working in a city in New England and have been for the last 5 years. So, I gave the officer process a try back in 2016 and didn't get selected. My AFOQT scores were pretty bad 30s-50s. PCSM was a 10. I really didn't take the test as seriously as I should've. GPA wasn't great either, 2.6. (General Studies) Now, I've enlisted and leave for BMT on May 2nd. I'd still like to give like to give the officer process another shot. I'm going for pilot or CSO. My main concern however, is my age. I'm 25, so it doesn't look like I'll have too much more time to try and get selected." My current plans are to get a PPL once I'm in, and take a few courses towards my masters to raise my GPA. I'll also study harder and retake the AFOQT, but I'm…

Hi all, I've been lurking for a long time but this is my first post. I'm a non-prior civilian, currently working on a package for an AD OTS pilot slot. My package has some really strong components, but there are also a few weaknesses. I haven't taken the TBAS yet, as I need a recruiter's endorsement to get access to the base near me where they offer the test, and recruiters are slow to respond to inquiries (I know this is normal). My main question is whether the positive aspects of the package outweigh the negatives enough to make me a competitive applicant to ANG fighter squadrons. I think I have a good shot at the AD OTS slot, but I'm also considering the guard. …
